Colleen Bready's forecast: Tornadoes possible as thunderstorms brew

Colleen Bready has your current conditions and updated weather forecast for June 19, 2025. Colleen Bready has your current conditions and updated weather forecast for June 19, 2025. After severe thunderstorms moved through southwestern Manitoba Wednesday, more are expected to develop in the region Thursday that could produce tornadoes. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued tornado watch Thursday for all areas within the Virden, Minnedosa and Dauphin regions. ECCC said a low pressure system will trigger severe thunderstorms in southeastern Saskatchewan Thursday afternoon that will move into southwestern Manitoba by early evening. The weather agency said conditions are favourable for these severe thunderstorms to produce tornadoes. Hail up to six centimetres in size, wind gusts up to 100 km/h and heavy rain are also likely. Dry conditions continue in the north Thursday, including in wildfire-affected areas. Sunshine or a mix of sun and clouds, light winds, and highs in the upper-teens or low-twenties are all forecast for the afternoon. Air quality has improved enough Thursday that ECCC has issued no related alerts in Manitoba or northwestern Ontario, but that could change. The weather agency said smoke plumes from wildfires near Island Lake on the Ontario side, coupled with smoke from renewed Nopiming Provincial Park fires will spread south-southwest back into Manitoba before moving north Thursday. That could diminish air quality in the Interlake and east of Lake Winnipeg.

Quebec woman, 68, dead after 2-vehicle crash in southwestern Manitoba on Monday

A 68-year-old Quebec woman died and several people were injured in a crash in southwestern Manitoba on Monday evening, RCMP say. Police were called to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of highways 83 and 257 in the rural municipality of Wallace-Woodworth, at the southwest corner of Virden, around 5:30 p.m. Monday, RCMP said in a news release on Tuesday. Officers found a heavily damaged SUV and a truck lying on its side farther down Highway 83, police said. The SUV, which had four people inside, is believed to have stopped at a stop sign as it neared the highway but then continued across and was struck by the truck on the rear driver's side, police said. A Quebec woman, 68, was pronounced dead at the site of the crash. The SUV driver, a 45-year-old woman from Saskatchewan, and two other passengers from Quebec were all taken to hospital and remain in stable condition, police said. Overland flood watch issued for southwestern Manitoba starting Wednesday

Residents in southwestern Manitoba are being warned to brace for overland flooding, as heavy rainfall is expected to hit the area between Wednesday and Friday. The province issued an overland flood watch Wednesday afternoon for areas south of the Trans-Canada Highway along the Virden to Brandon corridor, and west of Highway 10, including Souris, Melita and Boissevain. Forecasters with Manitoba's Hydrologic Forecast Centre said a precipitation system could bring more than 80 millimetres of rain to these areas over the next few days. Heavy rain over a short period could cause high surface runoff, leading to overland flooding, the province said in a news release. However, the exact location and amount of rain is still uncertain, the province warned. Areas in southern, central and northern Manitoba could also see between 20 to 70 millimetres of rainfall before the weather clears up on Friday night. Provincial officials are asking Manitobans to stay away from waterways, including creeks, streams, rivers and the Red River Floodway, while the flood watch is in effect. Members of the public should also avoid areas where flood-response crews are working, including flooded areas, dams and diversions. Strong winds are also expected to start on Thursday afternoon, lasting until Friday evening. North winds could reach up to 80 km/h, which may create waves that could hike up water levels by five feet or more. The flood watch comes as two dozen wildfires burn across parts of the province, which fire officials say have been caused by hot, dry weather and strong winds. Kristin Hayward, assistant deputy minister for the Conservation Officer Service and Manitoba Wildfire Service, said a few days of rain could help firefighting efforts, but the amount forecast may not be enough to quell fires in southeastern Manitoba, near Lac du Bonnet and Nopiming Provincial Park. "We are not seeing the forecasted amounts anywhere where we'd need them to be to extinguish the fires or make any appreciable difference in what those fires are doing," she said Wednesday.
