Maa Box Office Collection Day 1: Kajol's Horror film Opens With Rs 4 Crore

Last Updated: Kajol returns to the big screen with Maa, a mythological horror thriller directed by Vishal Furia. The film opened with Rs 4.15 crore on its first day. After a three-year break from the big screen, Kajol returned with Maa, a mythological horror thriller directed by Vishal Furia. The Day 1 numbers are finally in. According to early estimates by Sacnilk, Maa opened with a respectable Rs 4 crore on its first day. Not bad for a genre that's still pretty niche in Bollywood. As per early estimates, Maa earned Rs 4.15 crore on its opening day. The report also highlights that the film recorded an overall Hindi occupancy of 16.49 per cent on Friday. Morning shows started slow with just 8.23 per cent occupancy, but numbers picked up by the afternoon, reaching 20.08 per cent. The evening shows saw a further boost, clocking in at 21.16 per cent. A part of the review of Maa by News18 read, 'The concept and story have substance, but the film lacked largely because of its style of storytelling. Besides, the film also has a lot of stereotypes that could have been done without. Besides the exaggeration that the palace had a almost 30-feet tall Kali maa's stone carved statue, the way people from Chandrapur talk in the film, everything seems to be a cliche that all the Bengalis would be running away from. It only gets disappointing to see Ronit Roy, who plays a vital part in the film, deliver all his Hindi dialogues with such a heavy Bengali accent. A lot would argue that it is not how people from Bengal speak when they talk in Hindi." In Maa, a mythological horror thriller, Kajol takes on the powerful role of Ambika, a fearless mother who will stop at nothing to protect her daughter from dark, supernatural forces. The film blends myth and mystery, marking Kajol's first foray into the horror genre. Alongside her, the cast includes Indraneil Sengupta, Jitin Gulati, and Kherin Sharma. Directed by Vishal Furia, Maa is backed by producers Ajay Devgn and Jyoti Subbarayan. First Published: June 28, 2025, 11:20 IST

Maa box office collection day 1: Kajol's folk horror opens with Rs. 4.5 crore, left in the dust by Brad Pitt's F1

After a three-year hiatus from the big screen, Bollywood star Kajol returned in a new avatar with Maa, her first venture into the horror genre. Directed by Vishal Furia, best known for the Chhorii franchise, Maa marks a bold shift in Kajol's filmography and has opened on a promising note at the domestic box office. According to early estimates from industry tracker Sacnilk, Maa earned Rs. 4.5 crore (India nett) on its opening day. This performance significantly outpaces Kajol's last theatrical release, Salaam Venky, which collected only Rs. 0.65 crore on day one. The film registered an overall Hindi occupancy of 20.52% on Friday. As expected for a horror release, the morning shows saw a subdued turnout (8.23%), but occupancy steadily improved through the day, reaching 20.08% in the afternoon and peaking at 32.61% for the night shows. Regionally, Chennai led with the highest occupancy at 31.33%, followed by Lucknow at 28.75%, and the National Capital Region (NCR) at 27.00%. Mumbai trailed in fourth place with a 23.50% occupancy rate. That film debuted to Rs. 14.75 crore and went on to become a horror blockbuster. Maa's connection to that universe is expected to give it added momentum in the coming days, alongside generally decent word of mouth. However, Maa faces stiff box office competition. Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par, in its second week, reportedly earned Rs. 6.75 crore on its eighth day. Additionally, the international release F1: The Movie, starring Brad Pitt, made a strong start with Rs. 5.25 crore in India, further intensifying the race for audience attention. The film tells the story of Ambika, a fierce mother played by Kajol, who will go to any length to protect her daughter from otherworldly threats. With rising audience interest in horror across regions and languages, Maa is well-positioned to benefit from a growing trend, where well-executed horror films are finding commercial success in Indian cinema.

Maa Box Office Collection Day 1: Kajol's horror film makes Rs 4.50 crore debut; faces stiff ccompetition from Vishnu Manchu's 'Kannappa' and Brad Pitt's 'F1'

Kajol 's long-awaited return to the big screen with the horror drama Maa has seen a respectable start at the Indian box office. The film which faced some stiff competition at the ticket windows, managed to earn an estimated Rs 4.50 crore nett collection on its opening day. Directed by Vishal Furia , the supernatural thriller has managed to make its mark despite facing intense competition from two high-profile releases — the Vishnu Manchu starrer Kannappa and Brad Pitt 's racing drama F1. Released on June 27, Maa marked Kajol's comeback after a three-year hiatus and generated steady buzz among fans of both horror and emotional dramas. With a UA 16+ rating and a runtime of 2 hours and 15 minutes, the film combines Indian mythology and psychological horror, following a mother-daughter road trip that spirals into a chilling confrontation with a cursed legend. The film saw a slow start to its collections, recording just around 8.23% occupancy for its morning shows and saw its numbers rise to 32.61% for its night shows. With a collection of Rs 4.50 crore, Maa placed third in Friday's box office battle, coming in behind F1, which earned an estimated Rs 5 crore nett and Kannappa, which emerged on top with a total Rs 9 crore collection. While the opening figures may not be front-loaded in comparison to big-budget tentpoles, trade experts consider the haul a decent start given the film's mid-range scale and genre-specific appeal. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Jolie-Pitt Family Shows Support For Shiloh's Change Drivepedia Undo Maa, entering a crowded box office window could have also played a role in diminishing its box office collections. Despite the competition, Kajol's emotional performance and the film has been praised. Added support from Ajay Devgn , including a limited-time 'Buy 2 Get 1 Free' ticket offer, has also helped drive ticket sales, particularly in urban centres. Maa still has room to grow over the weekend, especially if positive reviews continue to build.
