Jun 30, 2025 10:53 PM IST Only nine girls secured admission during the second round of counselling held under the reserved category for the Senior Secondary Residential Schools for Meritorious Students on Monday. The admitted girls are from reserved categories of women headed households (WHH), private school students, and specially-abled candidates, from Ludhiana. (Manish/HT) Vishal Kumar, MIS coordinator, informed that the eight girl students from private schools secured admission at various meritorious schools through the Ludhiana centre. Among them, one student was admitted to the commerce stream at Ludhiana Meritorious School, six students were allocated seats at SAS Nagar school, with five opting for the non-medical stream and one for commerce, and another student chose the non-medical stream at Talwara school. Additionally, one girl student was admitted under the WHH category. The eligibility criteria for reserved categories require SC/ST candidates to have minimum 65% marks in Class 10, while other reserved categories must meet a 70% threshold. Moreover, only Class 10 certificates downloaded from the Punjab School Education Board's DigiLocker portal, properly signed and stamped by the school principal, are accepted for verification. To encourage diversity, 10% of seats in meritorious schools are reserved for students from recognised private and aided schools in Punjab. However, principal Satwant Kaur of Ludhiana Meritorious School revealed that around 90 seats across all the categories are still vacant at the Ludhiana centre. 'We expect these seats to be filled in the upcoming round of counselling, which will be announced soon,' she said. Kaur added that no students from the differently-abled category attended the counselling at Ludhiana. 'The final number of students admitted here will only be clear once they officially join the school,' she stated.

Oil firm detects theft from pipeline, lodges FIR in Buxar

Buxar: Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) officials on Thursday lodged an FIR against unidentified persons for oil theft from the IOC's Barauni-Kanpur pipeline at Nuawan village under Krishna Brahm police station area of Buxar district. Krishna Brahm SHO Chanchal Kumar said, "We have received a complaint regarding the oil theft and initiated an investigation into the matter. Charges have been filed under the Petroleum and Minerals Pipelines Act, Explosives Act, Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, and the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code." According to Indian Oil engineer, Vishal Kumar, the illegal activity came to light during a routine inspection on June 16 around 7.30am. Security guard Pramod Kumar observed signs of fresh excavation and disturbed soil above the pipeline, and promptly alerted the authorities. A joint team from Indian Oil and the local police reached the spot and found that a 2-inch illegal valve had been installed on the pipeline for stealing oil, resulting in the leakage. "This act not only damaged national infrastructure, but also posed a serious safety hazard due to the highly flammable nature of the product," said Kumar, adding that the disruption in supply triggered a temporary fuel crisis in the surrounding areas.

Gurugram civic body serves notices to 22 property tax defaulters who owe over ₹50 lakh

GURUGRAM : The MCG taxation department on Tuesday issued 22 notices to major defaulters for the outstanding property tax dues. Each of these defaulters has dues exceeding Rs 50 lakh to the municipal corporation. The civic body has compiled a list of 100 defaulters from each zone. Due to ongoing issues with property ID corrections, the municipal body issued an advisory on Tuesday, instructing residents to report directly to the Commissioner or Additional Commissioner if anyone solicits money for property tax-related services or corrections. The corporation assured prompt attention to such complaints and confirmed that legal proceedings will be initiated against offenders. Moreover, the commissioner advised residents to avoid engaging with middlemen or agents for any property tax-related matters. Under the Haryana Municipal Corporation Act , it is mandatory to pay property tax annually on all types of buildings and vacant plots within the limits of the MCG. Failure to pay property tax results in an annual interest rate of 18%, and defaulters are issued notices to pay the tax. If the tax is still not paid, the property in question can be sealed and auctioned. Officials said that the city's development plans and basic services rely on these revenue sources. "It is essential to take strict action against those who have not paid taxes for years. If the corporation conducts this campaign regularly, transparently, and fairly, it will not only increase revenue but also foster a sense of accountability among citizens. This is a crucial step towards the planned development of the city," said the MCG joint commissioner Vishal Kumar. According to the tax department records, since April 1, 2025, the MCG received 11,159 objections related to property tax. Out of these, only 1,283 objections are pending at the municipal level. Within the stipulated timeframe, 7,622 objections were resolved, while 554 objections were rejected due to a lack of documentation. Similarly, 1,700 objections were reverted to the applicant due to deficiencies, said the officials. Officials said that for citizens unfamiliar with the online process and unable to apply online themselves, help desks have been set up at the MCG offices. Here, staff are providing guidance and assistance with tax-related tasks. Moreover, all zonal taxation officers have been instructed to not only listen carefully to each citizen's complaints but also work towards their immediate resolution. All employees in the tax department have been instructed not to keep any application pending without a valid reason, nor reject or revert it. If any employee is found negligent, departmental action will be taken against them, said the joint commissioner.

Simulated air raid sirens, aerial attack and earthquake rescue training during mock drills in Tripura

Hours after Indian armed forces struck terrorist targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in response to last month's Pahalgam massacre, Tripura held mock drills along with other states and Union Territories on Wednesday, as ordered by the Centre as a measure to check preparedness for any emergency. The mock drills were conducted across all eight districts, with the largest being held at Umakanta Academy grounds in Agartala. The mock drills carried out by disaster management forces, Apada Mitra, civil defence volunteers, personnel from other agencies and medical officers involved an earthquake rescue drill, to be followed by air crash and blackout drills later in the evening. The first siren for the earthquake disaster rescue drill was sounded at 4 pm with affected areas simulated at IGM Chowmuhani, Fire Brigade Chowmuhani, and the GBP Hospital Bazar area. The air raid siren was sounded at 5.30 pm and an air raid and sounds of enemy aircraft firing and bombing were simulated, and volunteers were trained to take shelter during aerial attacks. A comprehensive operation of medical, paramedic, civil defence and other volunteers was conducted after the air raid. Speaking to reporters, Vishal Kumar, District Magistrate, West Tripura, said, 'This is similar to a drill that was done at the airport six months back. We had prepared for major disasters like earthquakes in drills in the past. But this time, we will also be experiencing air crash measures, ie, a blackout, when all lights will be shut down for about 10 minutes.' 'We are also preparing for any form of serial aggression we might see in the future. The state is surrounded by a foreign country all along. That's why there is some sensitivity there, it has been there all along. That's why we need our people and all agencies to be aware and be ready for any emergencies to be able to respond to any emergency or crisis,' he added.
