Need a good alternative to the big three? These carriers are my top 3 recommendations

But with rising costs and the gradual disappearance of extras like streaming perks, is it time to consider an alternative? While it's true that Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile control the only three mobile networks with wide national coverage, there are plenty of other carriers that piggyback off this same infrastructure. These providers can offer much cheaper alternatives to traditional postpaid plans, yet you'll still find many of the same features, as the gap between prepaid and postpaid continues to shrink. While there are dozens of great prepaid carriers highlighted in our best carrier guide, I wanted to focus on just four that I tend to recommend over postpaid. The best Verizon alternative: Visible Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority While there are several decent Verizon alternatives, Visible is my top recommendation if you want to use Big Red's network and are looking for truly unlimited data. The only real downside is that Visible requires a bit more self-setup and troubleshooting than some other carriers on this list. I usually only recommend it to people who are at least somewhat tech-savvy, don't mind looking up help online, or have a friend or family member who can help if needed. If you're looking for an alternative to T-Mobile's network that still gets the same priority level, you won't find any real options outside of Google Fi. Even T-Mobile's in-house brands like Metro and Mint use lower-priority data than its postpaid plans. Google Fi also excels with international features, offering better roaming perks than even the most expensive big three postpaid plans. Big families will appreciate that Google offers exceptional family discounts too, with rates dropping as low as $23 per month for the base unlimited package if you have five or more lines. You'll get the same service prioritization as AT&T's base postpaid plans, and the carrier is actually owned by AT&T. Like Google Fi, Cricket feels a lot like a traditional carrier: you'll find free phone offers, multi-line discounts, streaming perks, and many other extras you'd expect from a postpaid plan. While I personally haven't used Cricket as my daily driver in four or five years, several family members (including my own mother) are quite happy with it. In that case, US Mobile is often my next suggestion as a 'best of all worlds' option. US Mobile is currently the only prepaid carrier in the US that not only offers service across all three major networks, but also lets you switch between them. (Red Pocket technically supports all three too, but US Mobile's implementation is much more polished.) Let's break down what makes it stand out, where it falls short, and how it compares to postpaid options. Not a typo! iPhone 16e is just $99 right now with this amazing deal
I've always been a fan of the iPhone SE series, having made the original and iPhone SE 2 as my main drivers, but that all changed with the fourth generation model. Despite being the cheapest one in the current lineup, I'm still not convinced that the iPhone 16e offers good value at $599 — so much so that I tell friends and family to go with the iPhone 16 instead. Well, that all changes right now because Boost Mobile's offering the iPhone 16e for $99 and that's the kind of cost I would gladly pay for this phone. This comes out to be an 83% off instant discount and I think it's hard to pass up on. In order to get this generous offer from Boost Mobile, you'll need to activate it on its $60/month unlimited plan. Now this is what the iPhone 16e should cost. Boost Mobile's making the cheapest iPhone even cheaper ahead of Prime Day 2025 by bringing its price down to $99 when you start new service and commit to its $60/month unlimited plan. At $99, the iPhone 16e can't be beat and now widens its gap over the iPhone 16. Even though it has one of the simplest camera systems around, I said in my iPhone 16e review that the single 48MP camera on the back of the phone offers excellent performance for all sorts of conditions. I'm particularly surprised by its low light performance, which is a huge improvement over the previous iPhone SE (2022). Another thing you should know about the iPhone 16e is that it has the same Apple Intelligence features as the rest of the iPhone 16 models. In fact, I'm able to access Visual Intelligence via the Action Button to search stuff with the camera. Additionally, it's poised to get all the new iOS 26 features when the software update rolls out later this year — like the new Liquid Glass material design, Live Translation, new Camera app, and more. It's also powered by the same A18 chip found in the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, so its just as responsive with most things. This also helps out in the battery life department, where the iPhone 16e achieves a time of 12 hours and 41 minutes on Tom's Guide's battery benchmark test — and that's a huge improvement over the 7 hours and 38 minutes achieved by the iPhone SE (2022). The only thing I think you'll need to think about is whether or not Boost Mobile's $60/month unlimited plan is within your budget. I know it's up there compared to rivals like Visible and Mint Mobile, but this plan gets you 50GB of premium data per month — so you're getting the fastest speeds and priority when there's a lot of network congestion. After 12 months, you'll be able to get the iPhone 16e unlocked, so that it can be used on any carrier. Now that's a deal you won't find on Prime Day.

This is actually $35 cheaper than going with its annual plan that costs $275/year. Usually you pay more with a monthly plan as opposed to a yearly one, but this deal makes it the opposite. If I weren't a Visible subscriber already, I'd snag this deal because it comes out to a savings of $48 over what I pay now in a calendar year. That's enough money to splurge on early Prime Day deals going on now. In addition to its base unlimited plan, you can opt to upgrade to the carrier's other two options: Visible+ and Visible+ Pro. You can see what they offer over the base $20/month Visible plan, like having access to premium data that ensures you're prioritized and get the fastest speeds. Visible+ Pro also packages in smartwatch service as well, which supports Apple Watch Series 4 or newer, as well as the Pixel Watch 2 or newer. Ever since I ditched my traditional cell phone plan and opted to go with MVNOs like Mint Mobile and now Visible, I have saved so much money on my cell phone plan. I still can't fathom how I was paying $60/month for unlimited data, especially when I compare it to the $25/month rate I'm on now with Visible. During this time with Visible, I've had nothing but good service. From streaming my favorite shows, to sharing my data connection to my laptop when I'm on the go using my phone's hotspot, my Visible service has convinced me to never go back to a traditional wireless carrier. I'm just upset that this deal beats what I'm paying for right now. Regardless, you should take advantage of this deal while it's still here.

Lots of customers aren't happy with some of the decisions that T-Mobile has made in recent months. A survey conducted by Android Authority asked people which alternatives to T-Mobile were at the top of their lists, and it turns out that MVNOs ( Mobile Virtual Network Operator ) are favored by most. Google Fi uses T-Mobile's network. | Image credit — T-Mobile The most voted for alternative choice was Google Fi, an MVNO that primarily uses T-Mobile 's network for its operations. Google's name carries a lot of weight, especially for people who remember when Google Fiber first rolled out. It also helps that Google Fi can be cheaper than T-Mobile , which is a no-brainer when both are using the same network. Visible, another MVNO, came second. It uses Verizon's network, making it a good choice for customers who live in areas with poor T-Mobile coverage. Ookla just crowned T-Mobile as the best network in the U.S., but there are, naturally, areas across the country where Verizon 's network performs Google Fi and Visible, the next choices — in descending order of votes — were the following: Mint Mobile US Mobile Metro Funnily enough, Mint Mobile also uses the T-Mobile network. US Mobile uses that, as well as the networks of AT&T and Verizon . Meanwhile, Metro is literally an MVNO owned by T-Mobile , also running on its network. So, even when you're choosing an alternative to T-Mobile , you're almost guaranteed to be using its network regardless. At least the plans are cheaper, though. However, even the comments were filled with MVNOs like Helium Mobile, Tello, and others. Boost Mobile, which is part standalone carrier and part MVNO, was also a popular choice in the discussions. Mentions of recent Google Fi account suspensions were also made, something to consider if you're looking at giving the network a go. While T-Mobile is still a very popular carrier across the U.S., recent changes to its business model threaten that fame. T-Mobile removed tax-inclusive plans a while back, and then delisted Go5G plans as well, leading to a lot of outcry. This, after customers were walking out of T-Mobile stores due to the T-Life app being forced on them, was a badly-timed move to make. Not to mention the price hikes on price-locked plans some time back, now that was a bad week for T-Mobile 's PR. I understand that businesses change, but this many sudden changes has led to some very angry comments that I dare not summarize here. Survey reveals this is the T-Mobile alternative most people would go for
Joe Maring / Android Authority With over 131 million subscribers as of Q1 2025, T-Mobile is the second-largest telecom carrier in the US. However, recent decisions like retiring the Go5G lineup of plans in favor of the new Experience plans and unbundling taxes and fees from monthly prices have caused many users to start looking for alternatives in case they want to jump ship. We asked users what carrier they would choose as a T-Mobile alternative, and Google Fi and Visible turned up as the top two choices. Our survey received over 4,400 votes, and over 1,280 people voted in favor of Google Fi, giving it 29% of our votes. Google Fi as a top T-Mobile alternative makes sense, too, as Fi uses T-Mobile's towers for its coverage. If you already have good T-Mobile network reception and want to switch out for other reasons, Google Fi will most likely give you equally good coverage. Google Fi's plans are also cheaper than T-Mobile's, and during network congestion, Fi customers are prioritized at the same level as regular T-Mobile postpaid plans. The cherry on top is that users get free smartwatch data across all Google Fi plans, and we can see why enthusiasts like Fi. Visible is the runner-up T-Mobile alternative, getting over 1,050 votes for a 24% claim. This MVNO uses Verizon's network for its coverage, which makes it a good option if you plan to move out of T-Mobile because of cell reception issues (as long as Verizon works well in your area). Visible also offers plans that are not only competitively priced but also very straightforward, so you don't get stuck in analysis paralysis. Taxes and fees are included too, making your decision less of a math puzzle than it is with T-Mobile. On number three, we have Mint Mobile, which also relies on T-Mobile's towers for its cell service. The draw here is that some users prefer paying their phone bill in bulk, which gives them a higher upfront cost, but some of the cheapest effective monthly rates available anywhere, going down as low as $15 per month for unlimited talk, text, and 5G data for three months. Some caveats come along with the low price, so we aren't surprised this didn't make it to the top of the list. Not a popular choice, but some users also prefer US Mobile and Metro by T-Mobile. Comments also mentioned Boost Mobile, Straight Talk, Helium Mobile, Tello, and even Connect by T-Mobile as emergent choices that work out for some people. At the end of the day, these choices are subjective, as what works out for one may not work out for another. This is precisely why we need healthy competition between carriers.
