Wheat production in Oman surpasses 10,000t in 2024-2025 season
Muscat – Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources (MAFWR) has announced substantial growth in wheat production across the sultanate following successful implementation of a national wheat support plan launched in early 2023. The plan forms part of wider national efforts to strengthen food security and achieve self-sufficiency in key crops. Total wheat production in the 2024-2025 season reached 10,128.341 tonnes with market value of over RO3mn The cultivated area in this season totalled 8,327 acres, reflecting increasing interest in and support for local wheat farming. Dhofar led production efforts with 7,723 tonnes harvested accounting for 76% of the total national output. It was followed by Dhahirah with 1,118 tonnes and Dakhliyah with 877.185 tonnes. Dr Khair al Busaidi, Director of Palm and Plant Production Department at MAFWR, said that the wheat support plan aligns with objectives of Oman Vision 2040, which aims to improve the sultanate's food security. 'The ministry provides technical guidance, advisory services and support for harvesting operations to ensure sustainable production.' Busaidi also noted that MAFWR is working closely with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning to expand wheat cultivation by allocating new agricultural land for investment through usufruct agreements.

Value of wheat output tops RO 3 million in 2024-2025 season
Muscat: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources has affirmed that wheat production has seen significant growth across various governorates of Oman following the implementation of a local wheat support plan starting in 2023. This initiative falls within national efforts to enhance food security and achieve self-sufficiency in staple grains. The ministry clarified that the total production for the 2024-2025 season reached 10,128.341 tonnes, with a market value of RO 3,038,502, cultivated across 8,327 acres. Dhofar Governorate contributed 76 per cent of Oman's total wheat production this year, yielding 7,723 tonnes, followed by Al Dhahirah Governorate with 1,118 tonnes and Al Dakhiliyah with 877.185 tonnes, while the remaining quantities were distributed among other governorates. Dr Khair bin Tuwair al Busaidy, Director of the Palm and Plant Production Department at the MoAFWR, stated that the local wheat support plan aims to strengthen food security systems in line with the objectives of 'Oman Vision 2040". This, he pointed out, is achieved by enabling farmers to cultivate high-yield, high-quality improved wheat varieties, providing assistance in harvesting operations, and offering technical and advisory support. He added that the ministry, in coordination with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning, is expanding wheat cultivation by allocating new agricultural lands for wheat farming and offering them as usufruct lands for farmers and investors. Dr Al Busaidy affirmed that the ministry, through its research centres, continues to develop wheat farming, improve local varieties, and introduce new strains adapted to Oman's climate while maintaining high productivity and quality. He explained to Oman News Agency (ONA) that the constructive cooperation and partnership between the MoAFWR and Oman Flour Mills Company has effectively contributed to the sustainability of wheat cultivation. This collaboration has encouraged farmers to continue wheat production and benefit from the support plan. New accords on trade, security strengthen Egypt-Oman relations
Egypt - Talks between the foreign ministers of Egypt and Oman in Cairo on Tuesday concluded with the signing of seven agreements to enhance cooperation in areas ranging from investment and labour to regional security. Egyptian Foreign and Emigration Minister Badr Abdelatty hosted his Omani counterpart, Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi, for the 16th session of the Egyptian-Omani Joint Committee. The talks resulted in new memorandums of understanding covering labour, mineral wealth, investment promotion, media cooperation, food safety, and religious affairs. According to a statement from Foreign Ministry Spokesman Tamim Khallaf, the discussions were aimed at strengthening all aspects of their bilateral relationship, in line with directives from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and Omani Sultan Haitham bin Tarik. Minister Abdelatty expressed Egypt's desire for a 'qualitative leap' in economic integration, particularly in trade, industry, renewable energy—including green hydrogen and ammonia—logistics, and technology. He stressed the need to activate a joint business council and affirmed that Egyptian companies are prepared to contribute to development projects outlined in Oman's Vision 2040. A key proposal involved enhancing cooperation between the Suez Canal Economic Zone and the Duqm Special Economic Zone Authority in maritime transport and logistics. On regional issues, the two ministers discussed the situation in the Gaza Strip. Abdelatty emphasised the necessity of resuming a ceasefire, releasing hostages and prisoners, and ensuring the flow of humanitarian aid. The talks also addressed tensions between Iran and Israel, with both ministers stressing the importance of stabilising the ceasefire and favouring diplomatic solutions for the Iranian nuclear file to reduce regional tensions. They found a convergence of views on developments in Yemen, Syria, Sudan, and the Horn of Africa. From his side, Omani Minister Al Busaidi conveyed greetings from Sultan Haitham bin Tarik to President Sisi and praised the deep ties between the two nations across trade, culture, and education. He also affirmed Oman's support for Egypt's water security. The meeting, which was also attended by Egyptian Minister of Labour Mohamed Gibran, touched upon the status of the Egyptian community in Oman. Gibran praised the support they receive and expressed Egypt's interest in expanding cooperation in labour training. Additionally, Abdelatty thanked Oman for its support of Egyptian candidates in regional and international organisations, including the nomination of Khaled El-Enany for the position of Director-General of UNESCO.
