AP file/Representative image At least 10 people have been killed and several others were left injured in Kyiv after a Russian missile and drone attack targeted the Ukrainian capital city. Ukraine's Interior Minister updated on social media that the attacks in Kyiv hit several residential areas, hospitals and sports infrastructure, with six people dying in a high-rise building, the city's mayor, Vitali Klitschko, said. The Ukrainian Air Force said that the latest Russian barrage included 352 drones and 16 missiles, which hit several places in the country, but the greatest impact was felt in Kyiv. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Valeriy Mankuta, a 33-year-old resident of Kyiv, told the BBC, he 'woke up in the rubble' after his building was struck by what officials identified as a missile. He managed to escape by climbing out through a window. 'There were bricks on top of me, something in my mouth. It was absolute hell,' he told Reuters. Russian drone attacks also killed three people in Ukraine's northeastern region of Sumy, including a child. Diplomatic efforts to end the three-year war have stalled, with the last direct meeting between Kyiv and Moscow almost three weeks ago and no follow-up talks scheduled. Meanwhile, Russian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met British Prime Minister Keir Starmer during a surprise visit to London on Monday. He is scheduled to attend a two-day NATO summit in The Hague starting on Tuesday. Zelenskyy is set to attend on the sidelines, but his involvement is being kept to a minimum to avoid a confrontation with US President Donald Trump. Since returning to the office, Trump has upended the West's approach towards Russia's war on Ukraine by undercutting Kyiv and opening the door to closer ties with Moscow. Moscow has intensified its offensive against Ukraine in recent days, launching widespread drone and missile attacks designed to overwhelm the air defence systems. 14 dead after Russian bombardments of Ukraine

dpa Kiev At least 14 people were killed in a series of Russian airstrikes on Ukraine, authorities said on Monday, as missile and drone attacks targeted multiple cities including the capital, Kiev. Kiev officials said nine people were killed and 33 injured in an overnight assault on the Ukrainian capital. Mayor Vitali Klitschko sad the casualties occurred during a strike on a residential building. Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko described the attack as involving heavy rocket and drone strikes. Authorities reported one person killed in the wider Kiev region and two others in the northern Chernihiv region, where a further 10 people were injured in related attacks. In southern Ukraine, at least two people were killed in a Russian missile strike, President Volodymyr Zelensky reported on his Telegram channel. A ballistic missile hit a largely empty secondary school in the city of Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi during school holidays, Zelensky said. Around a dozen people were injured in the strike on the city, located on the Dniester Estuary in the Odessa region. Zelensky called for increased international pressure on Russia through stricter sanctions. 'If Russia cannot be forced to make peace, the protection of schools, hospitals and ordinary homes in other European countries will have to be considered,' he said. Ukraine has been resisting a full-scale Russian invasion since February 2022 with Western support. Earlier, Zelensky accused Russia of acting out of self-interest, writing on X that Moscow had 'performatively' condemned US attacks on Iranian nuclear sites over the weekend. 'Today, Moscow is silent after the Russian army carried out a completely cynical strike using Russian-Iranian Shahed drones and missiles against civilian infrastructure in Kyiv and other cities and communities of ours,' he wrote.

13 killed, 57 hurt in Russian aerial assault against Kyiv, provinces

June 23 (UPI) -- At least 13 people were killed and 57 injured in Ukraine, half of them in Kyiv, after Russian forces attacked the capital and other targets in the eastern half of the country with hundreds of drones and ballistic and cruise missiles, officials said Monday. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said in a social media update that six people were killed when a missile struck and badly damaged a building in the central Shevchenkivskyi district, but that the rescue operation was still underway and there might be more casualties buried under the rubble. "A terrible picture in the Shevchenko district. Extensive damage to a five-story building. Rescuers, medics, and municipal services are working at the scene. The blast wave also damaged the apartments of the 25-story residential building opposite. Ten people were rescued from it. Among them, a child and a pregnant woman," said Klitschko. Another 22 people were injured, 12 of them hospitalized, in attacks on residential and non-residential buildings in five other districts of the capital, he added. The governor of the region, Mykola Kalashnyk, said one person was killed in Bilotserkivka district, southwest of Kyiv, and four were injured, two of whom were admitted to the hospital. Residential targets were hit in Boryspil and Bila Tserkva, where a medical facility and a hotel were also destroyed. The town of Bucha, just northwest of Kyiv, one of the first Ukrainian settlements overrun by Russian forces and scene of the U.N.-documented execution of at least 73 civilians and other suspected war crimes after Moscow launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022, also came under attack, damaging several houses and vehicles. In neighboring Chernihiv province to the northeast, which borders both Russia and Belarus, at least three people were killed and 11 injured, including four teenagers, in missile and drone strikes on Chernihiv, the regional capital, and four other districts, according to Chernihiv Gov. Viacheslav Chaus. In Donetsk, one of four Ukrainian provinces partly or fully controlled by Russian forces, Gov. Vadym Filashkin reported on Telegram that two people had been killed in Siversk, 18 miles east of the city of Slovyansk, and in Myrne, east of Pokrovsk, with five more injured. In part-Russian-occupied Kherson, Gov. Oleksandr Prokudin reported via social media that one person had been killed and six injured in Russian drone, artillery and airstrikes on Kherson city and several other communities, damaging seven apartment buildings, 14 houses, a gas pipeline and other civilian targets. The Ukrainian Air Force said on its official account on Telegram that of 368 incoming attack drones, ballistic and cruise missiles, mostly targeting Kyiv, air defenses managed to down all but 14. More deaths in Kyiv as Russia hits civilian infrastructure

Russia unleashed its latest missile and drone strike on Kyiv, killing at least seven people, as Moscow steps up its aerial attacks on civilian infrastructure. A section of a residential building collapsed after it was hit, and more than 30 people were injured across the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram on Monday morning. Recovery work continues and more casualties are likely trapped in the rubble, according to Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko. Casualties were reported in other Ukrainian regions which faced Russian attacks overnight. "Russia has demonstrated that the term 'civilian object' doesn't exist for them," Klymenko said on Telegram. The overnight strikes by President Vladimir Putin's forces followed a similar pattern to last week's assault that killed 27 people in Ukraine. The country was attacked by 352 strike drones and 16 ballistic and cruise missiles into Monday, with Kyiv and the surrounding region the main target, according to Ukraine's military. One of the capital's subway entry points was damaged, the city administration said on Telegram. Subway stations are used as shelters during air raids. In total, 339 drones and 15 missiles were shot down or jammed, according to Ukraine's Air Defense. The latest strikes on Kyiv come amid a renewed effort by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to ensure further support from Western allies, as the escalating conflict between Iran and Israel climbs further up their agenda. The Ukrainian leader, who is expected to attend the NATO summit in The Hague this week, made a surprise visit to the U.K. on Monday, where he called for renewed pressure on Russia. He has already called on western allies to allocate 0.25% of their GDP to support Ukraine's defense industry next year. At the same time, his country has amassed $43 billion to ramp up production and to buy drones, artillery, and other weapons. Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, who is in Brussels for meeting of EU foreign ministers, also urged partners to impose tough sanctions, including secondary restrictions, which would "strike Russian economy and oil revenues." With all eyes on the Middle East, Sybiha and Zelenskyy have both sought to contrast Russia's "performative condemnation" and "uproar" about U.S. and Israeli air strikes on its ally Iran with its ongoing commitment to subjugating Ukraine through its own bombing campaign against cities. "Today Moscow is silent after the Russian army carried out a cynical strike using Iranian Shahed drones and missiles against civilian infrastructure in Kyiv," said the Ukrainian President in a post on X. ----------- -With assistance from Alan Crawford.
