Aviation safety concerns: LDA removes 7 illegal rooftop structures near Lucknow airport
Acting on aviation safety concerns raised by Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport authorities here, the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) has removed seven illegal rooftop structures from residential buildings situated close to the airport. The structures, including water tanks and tin sheds installed without permission, were flagged as potential safety hazards. Quoting the Aircraft Act, 1934, a spokesperson for the airport had then stated that construction within a 20-km radius of any airport must be preceded by a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the authority concerned . (FOR REPRESENTATION) LDA secretary Vivek Srivastava confirmed on Saturday that the authority identified 13 such buildings through a survey conducted soon after the airport authorities raised the red flag. 'We found violations on the rooftops of several houses, including temporary and permanent encroachments. Out of the 13, we have acted on seven and removed the unauthorized additions,' Srivastava stated. The remaining six structures are yet to be acted upon. Srivastava said the LDA is waiting for a mutually agreed date from the airport administration to conduct another joint drive. 'So far, we have not received a fresh timeline from the airport authorities,' he added. A Hindustan Times report published on August 29, 2024 had highlighted that nearly 50 houses had been constructed within 500 metres of the airport's boundary wall, in clear violation of aviation norms. These structures were flagged by the airport for posing a risk to aircraft operations and notices for demolition were served. Quoting the Aircraft Act, 1934, a spokesperson for the airport had then stated that construction within a 20-km radius of any airport must be preceded by a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the authority concerned . 'Several houses were constructed without seeking necessary permissions, which is a threat to flight safety,' the spokesperson had said. Sources at the airport confirmed that during a recent district-level meeting, officials once again raised the issue and requested the LDA to take decisive action against such illegal constructions. They also revealed that the original objection letter was sent almost a year ago, but comprehensive enforcement is still awaited. When contacted, LDA's zonal Incharge Devansh Trivedi on Saturday said no fresh letter from the airport authorities has been received till date. Meanwhile, action against a developer who had constructed over 20 houses near the airport boundary remains stalled. Although the LDA had issued a demolition order, the matter was put on hold after the developer appealed before the divisional commissioner. Despite inspections by senior officials, including additional secretary Gyanendra Verma, no further action has been taken, said an LDA official. Sources within LDA attribute the delay to administrative transitions and lack of coordination among departments.

In a significant step towards advancing Hydrogen Research and Clean Energy Innovation, Dover India (Part of Dover Corporation), and RV College of Engineering (RVCE), Mysuru Road, Bengaluru, have announced a strategic partnership to establish a state-of-the-art laboratory in Materials and Component Reliability Testing under the Centre for Hydrogen and Green Technology, a Centre of Excellence at RVCE. The lab, to be housed within the RVCE campus, is poised to become a hub for cutting-edge research in hydrogen technologies and advanced material reliability under extreme environments. Team Dover & Team RVCE This collaboration aims to accelerate research in hydrogen systems and, over time, will potentially expand to other emerging areas such as sustainable materials, IoT, and Industry 4.0. The CoE will host state-of-the-art infrastructure developed jointly by researchers from Dover India Innovation Center (DIIC) and RVCE. These facilities, designed according to global standards, are first-of-their-kind in India and are available only in a handful of countries globally. The CoE will bring together over 20 technologists from Dover and RVCE to conduct next-generation research enabling hydrogen generation, storage, transportation, handling and safety, and end applications. It will also serve as a training ground for RVCE students to hone their skills using high-end infrastructure and be at the forefront of clean energy technology. Pioneering India's Hydrogen Research Ecosystem Dover India's R&D arm, established in 2021 in Jigani, Bengaluru, has emerged as a leading Innovation Center focusing on prognostics, tribology, corrosion and coatings, polymer synthesis, and material characterization. This new facility marks a significant capability expansion under DIIC's platform-based approach that supports Operating Company applications and accelerates multi-sector technology development. 'Collaborating with RVCE enables us to foster a strong academia-industry partnership that will fuel the next wave of clean energy innovation and cover the entire spectrum of basic and applied research in this area,' said Vivek Srivastava, R&D Head, who is leading the initiative from Dover's end. Leadership Commitment The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the establishment of the laboratory under the Centre for Hydrogen and Green Technology was formally signed by senior leadership from both institutions. Tushar Banerjee, Vice President & Managing Director, and Prashanth Santhanam, Senior Director – Finance, represented Dover India. From RVCE, the MoU was signed in the presence of Dr. M. P. Shyam, President – Rashtreeya Sikshana Samithi Trust (RSST), Dr. K. N. Subramanya, Principal – RV College of Engineering, and Dr. Geetha K.S., Vice Principal – Strategic Higher Education Leader, Expert in STEM Curriculum Development, Research & Innovation and Dr. Ujwal Shreenag Meda, Coordinator, Centre for Hydrogen and Green Technology, Their joint vision underscores the commitment of both organizations to nurture innovation, build scalable solutions, and drive Indias leadership in the global hydrogen economy. About the Company Dover is a diversified global manufacturer and solutions provider headquartered in Downers Grove, Illinois, USA, with revenue of over $7 billion. Dover's India footprint includes manufacturing plants in Chennai, Bhiwadi, Mumbai, and Vadodara, with multiple sales offices across India. Gangotri highway faces erosion as Bhagirathi breaches safety wall
Uttarkashi: Gangotri national highway -- a vital route for the Char Dham pilgrimage and national security since it connects border areas -- is under threat from rapid erosion near Sonagad in Uttarkashi district. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now A 16-metre stretch of a newly built safety wall has been washed away by the surging Bhagirathi river, raising serious concerns about stability of the narrow highway as the monsoon season approaches. Located roughly 60 km from the district headquarters, the Sonagad stretch has long been prone to erosion. In preparation for this year's yatra, Border Roads Organisation (BRO) constructed a concrete safety wall to protect the area. However, the recent rise in river flow compromised the structure within a month. Although traffic remains unaffected for now, further erosion could disrupt access to Gangotri Dham and hamper military logistics along the China border. Authorities have been urged to expedite long-term protective measures before the situation worsens. BRO commander Vivek Srivastava explained that the erosion has been aggravated by an old water-diversion channel built for the now-defunct Loharinag-Pala hydropower project. "This channel is directing the river towards the highway, intensifying erosion. While temporary repairs are underway, we have proposed constructing a more durable RCC (reinforced cement concrete) wall after the monsoon," he said. Experts said that the abandoned Loharinag-Pala project is the root cause. Launched in 2005 and halted in 2010, it left behind altered river flows and partially dug tunnels that continue to destabilise the area. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "The river's natural flow was diverted by NTPC, and even after the project was scrapped, it was never fully restored," said a senior geologist, warning of the area's geological sensitivity. Residents have expressed strong concerns about negligence and are demanding that the unfinished project be revisited or rectified. "The safety wall built just a month ago has already collapsed. This is clearly a result of substandard work and must be investigated. With the Char Dham yatra ongoing and monsoon approaching, urgent steps must be taken to protect this critical route," said Shailendra Matura, president of the hotel association, Uttarkashi.
