Grading Dan Vladar, Christian Dvorak contracts with Flyers
The post Grading Dan Vladar, Christian Dvorak contracts with Flyers appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Philadelphia Flyers, who have not been to the Stanley Cup Playoffs since 2020, are banking on the latest moves from general manager Daniel Briere that their drought could soon come to an end. The Flyers have re-signed a handful of their current players, including Noah Cates and Cam York. Additionally, they acquired Trevor Zegras from the Anaheim Ducks in a trade while also signing goaltender Dan Vladar from the Calgary Flames and Christian Dvorak from the Montreal Canadiens. Vladar agreed to a two-year contract with a $3.35 million cap hit, while Dvorak signed a one-year pact worth $5.4 million. How are these players going to affect the Flyers moving forward, and can they help the franchise return to the playoffs? According to Briere, Vladar jumped at the chance to don the Flyers jersey and to compete with the franchise that has long been searching for a bona fide No. 1 goaltender since the days of Ron Hextall. 'Dan Vladar told us very early on that he saw an opportunity,' Briere explained via from the team practice facility located in Voorhees, New Jersey. 'He wanted to come in and compete in Philadelphia, so we jumped on it.' 'He has a chance to become our No. 1,' Briere said. 'Depending on how he plays, how our other guys play…The one thing, at the end of the year when I met with our group of goalies, I told them, 'You have to be ready at training camp.' 'I said, 'We're probably gonna go out. This wasn't good enough last season. We're probably gonna go out and bring in some reinforcements, and you're gonna be in a battle, all of you guys.' Vladar, who was a draft pick of the Boston Bruins in 2015, began his career with the franchise but would later be traded to the Calgary Flames, where he was a backup to starter Jacob Markstrom. He would eventually struggled with consistency despite a strong 13-6-2 record in his first season in Calgary, and upon the departure of Markstrom last offseason to the New Jersey Devils, Vladar wasn't able to seize the starting reins from Dustin Wolf, who emerged as the new starter with the Flames. This doesn't mean that Vladar can't be successful with his change of scenery, having relocated from Calgary to Philadelphia. At 27 years old, Vladar is still in the prime of his career and could easily bounce back under the system of new Flyers head coach Rick Tocchet. He'll form a tandem with Samuel Ersson, who needed someone to routinely compete with for starting time heading into his contract season. 'It looks that way,' Briere said of a goalie competition between Vladar and Ersson. 'The way they've played the last couple years, it's probably Ersson/Vladar, but how many teams go with only two goalies? Not too many of them. You need three, four goalies. 'My message to them is, it doesn't matter where you slot in right now. Come in, be ready, and when it's your turn, you've got to perform. I hope we can create that environment that every single night they're battling for their spot. We're going to need at least three goalies, maybe more. We know that, and I think Vladar helps us put us in a better position.' Additionally, Vladar is signed for two years. This means that if things were to ultimately go awry for him with the Flyers, they aren't locked into a long-term commitment with him. Overall Grade: B The Flyers picked up valuable center depth when they signed Dvorak from the Canadiens, a position that they are lacking in. 'I'm excited about him,' Briere said of Dvorak. 'I think one of the enticing parts for him is the opportunities that he's going to have. It's no secret that we're pretty thin in the middle. (Sean) Couturier and (Noah) Cates really are the only two, for sure. 'We hope that Zegras can play center as well, but there's opportunities there for him, probably more than he would have seen somewhere else. I feel that, that was probably very enticing for him. So to get a big body like that, that can play a 200-foot game, win faceoffs for us. I think he makes us a better team, having him down the middle.' He appeared in all 82 regular-season games for the Canadiens this past season, scoring 12 goals while adding 21 assists. He's appeared in 534 career NHL games with the Arizona Coyotes and Canadiens and has scored 105 goals with 144 assists. He's also added four goals and an assist in 14 postseason games. While Dvorak isn't a savior or elite player by any means, he fills an immediate need for the Flyers and could earn a longer, more lucrative contract in the future if he impresses in his first season with the club. Meet goaltender Ivan Prosvetov, the Calgary Flames' new backup plan
Article content Both Cooley and Prosvetov are signed to one-way contracts for the upcoming season. Both require waivers to be assigned to the Wranglers, a risk the Flames will have to take with whoever winds up as the third-stringer. Article content 'I called Cools after the signing was announced and just said, 'Nothing changes. The competition is wide open,' ' Sigalet stressed. 'We want those guys to push each other and fight for that job. Article content 'I think both guys see the opportunity, so it should be a good competition at camp.' Article content Article content Opportunity is all that Prosvetov is asking for. Article content He had a photo of Martin Brodeur as the screensaver on his computer. Article content He lists Sergei Bobrovsky, Carey Price, Pekka Rinne and Semyon Varlamov as some of his other puck-stopping idols. Article content In addition to an NHL dream, the staff in Calgary are confident that Prosvetov has a big-league skill set. It's the same sort of potential they saw in Vladar when he was stuck as third on the depth chart in Boston. Article content Now 27, Vladar could be the go-to goalie for the Flyers next season. He moved to the City of Brotherly Love on a two-year deal that carries an annual cap hit of US$3.35 million. Article content 'I just think in the games that (Prosvetov) played over the last few seasons in the NHL, you saw a lot of good,' Sigalet said. 'Maybe a little bit inconsistent, but you could see the talent there. Article content 'He feels like he grew his game a lot in Russia and he wants an opportunity to have another chance and another kick at the can. When you talk to him, he wanted to go back and play a lot of games and work on his game, and he wanted to come back over when he felt like he was ready to step back into that level. We had a good conversation and he seems like a really mentally tough goaltender, and he has something to prove.' Article content Article content And now, a place to prove it. Article content 'It's huge — the chance to play in the best league in the world, with the best players,' Prosvetov said. 'And in Canada, too. We call it the capital of hockey, right? So I'm really happy for another chance.' Article content Article content After spending parts of five seasons in the AHL's Pacific Division, Prosvetov needs no introduction to his potential partner-in-pads. Article content He tried to outduel Wolf in the minors. Now, he can't wait to join forces with him. Article content 'He was always a top guy in the American League and it was kind of just a matter of time until he was going to have his shot,' Prosvetov said of Wolf, the runner-up for the Calder Trophy. 'Obviously, a great year by him last year. Article content 'He's definitely a great goalie. He moves really well, reads the play well, really skilled. And I've heard a lot of good things about him, so I really look forward to play with him and even learn something from him. I'll just try to help him out, and he's going to help me, if we're goalie partners.' Article content

Flames add Russian goaltender to backup Dustin Wolf
Dan Vladar is out. Ivan Prosvetov is in. The Calgary Flames will have a new backup in net next season after Vladar inked a deal with the Philadelphia Flyers that will pay him US$3.35-million annually. Shortly after that was made official, the Flames got Russian shot-stopper Prosvetov to put pen-to-paper. He'll compete with Devin Cooley during training camp for the right to be Dustin Wolf's backup. '(Vladar) wants to be a starter,' Flames GM Craig Conroy explained. 'He feels like Dustin Wolf came in and kind of stole that spot. He did a great job, Dustin, and Dan did a great job for us but I think he felt there was more opportunity out there and obviously Philly was a spot that was right for him.' There had been rumours throughout the spring that the Flames were a frontrunner to acquire Prosvetov's services and in a free-agency market that was short on options, the 26-year-old is an intriguing option. He's got 24 games of NHL experience to his name but spent last season with CSKA Moscow in the KHL. While back home in Russia, he put up impressive numbers in 38 games, posting a 2.32 goals-against-average and a .920 save percentage. Those are considerably better than his NHL numbers. In his last NHL season in 2023-24, Prosvetov played in 11 games for the Colorado Avalanche and finished the year with a 3.16 goals-against-average and a .895 save percentage. He's still young and has lots to prove, which will matter as he'll likely get limited game-time while Wolf builds off a stellar rookie season that saw him finish second in Calder Trophy voting. daustin@
