Aidan O'Brien eyes St Leger bid after Scandinavia leads home Ballydoyle 1-2 in Goodwood Cup

The Aidan O'Brien-trained stable companions dominated the betting, so while Scandinavia was discarded by Ryan Moore, Wayne Lordan's mount was still only a 4/1 shot following his victory in the Bahrain Trophy at Newmarket. Illinois attempted to make all but Scandinavia drew upsides the 7/4 favourite over a furlong out and the two had it between them, with the concession of 14lb ultimately proving too much for Moore's mount, which went down by three-parts of a length. Sweet William stayed on for third. O'Brien immediately signalled the St Leger at Doncaster as the big aim for his winner. 'Wayne gave him a lovely ride – in the race at Ascot [Queen's Vase] he was trapped six wide all the way and then at Newmarket Ryan said he felt like a very good horse,' he said. 'Illinois went out there in front and looked to have the race won, but then the other horse got him. 'We went to the Gold Cup [with Illinois] without a preparation and I know we haven't seen the best of him. 'Scandinavia is a typical Justify, he just won't lie down, he puts his head down and won't be beaten. 'Lambourn didn't go to the King George as we had one eye on York for him. It's all out in the open and this horse is ready-made for the Leger, which is where he will go. 'He [Scandinavia] travelled very well through the race, he has a great mind. Lambourn can go for the Voltigeur and then maybe for the Arc.' O'Brien was also pleased with the performance of the runner-up. 'I thought Ryan did everything perfect today on Illinois. He was out there and had the race won, and then the other horse just came and got him,' he reflected. 'I don't think we've seen the best of Illinois yet because I think we went to the Gold Cup a year too early and his preparation wasn't right to win a Gold Cup. He ran an unbelievable race, and he'll have the rest of the season.' Alan King's hugely popular Trueshan, winner of the race in 2021, was pulled up sharply by Hollie Doyle at halfway, with news emerging his injury had proved to be a fatal one. Earlier, O'Brien's 13/8 favourite Dorset Street could only finish fifth to the Eve Johnson Houghton-trained Zavateri (8/1) in the Coral Vintage Stakes.

Illinois attempted to make all but Scandinavia drew upsides over a furlong out and the two had it between them, with the concession of 14lb ultimately proving too much for Moore's mount, who went down by three-quarters of a length. French Master stayed on for a never-nearer third. O'Brien immediately signalled the St Leger at Doncaster as the big aim for his winner. 'Wayne gave him a lovely ride – in the race at Ascot (Queen's Vase) he was trapped six wide all the way and then at Newmarket Ryan said he felt like a very good horse,' he said. He added: 'I thought Ryan did everything perfect today on Illinois. He was out there and had the race won, and then the other horse just came and got him. 'I don't think we've seen the best of Illinois yet because I think we went to the Gold Cup a year too early and his preparation wasn't right to win a Gold Cup. 'He ran an unbelievable race, and he'll have the rest of the season, but often when that happens it can stop the progression you would really want to come. I really think we haven't seen the best of him yet.'

Doncaster Classic firmly on the agenda for unbeaten Carmers

'Carmers is in good form. The plan is to go for the Leger and how we get there remains to be seen,' said Twomey. 'The owners are keen on going for the Voltigeur (at York) and there is also the Vinnie Roe in Leopardstown. We could stay at home and just go straight there, so we'll see.' Twomey – who said his beaten Ribblesdale Stakes favourite Catalina Delcarpio would be coming back to 10 furlongs – added: 'He's a grand horse and doesn't show you much at home. 'He went to Ballinrobe and won, eight days later went to Navan and won, a month later went to Ascot and won. It's hard to find a horse like him.'

Aidan O'Brien keeping door open for Ryan Moore to ride Delacroix at Coral-Eclipse

Aidan O'Brien has kept the door open for Ryan Moore to ride Delacroix in the Coral-Eclipse, as he confirmed both the beaten Derby favourite and winner of the French equivalent, Camille Pissarro, would head to Sandown on Saturday. Camille Pissarro is slightly shorter than his stablemate in the sponsor's betting, with Coral going 13-2 about the Chantilly Classic winner and 8-1 Delacroix, who will bid to bounce back from Epsom disappointment. Speaking at Tipperary on Wednesday evening, O'Brien suggested the Ballydoyle number one was yet to make the final call on who he will ride: "We are declaring in the morning, and it looks like Delacroix and Camille Pissarro are going to go. That's what the lads are thinking. "It is not written in stone, but there is a chance Ryan could ride Delacroix, we'll see." O'Brien also provided updates on dual Derby hero Lambourn and Pretty Polly scorer Whirl after both excelled in the feature events at the Curragh last weekend. Options remain fluid for Lambourn, who could set out on a path to add to his Classic haul at Doncaster in September, or take on his elders in Ascot's King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Meanwhile, Oaks heroine Minnie Hauk could be left to replicate Lambourn by following up Epsom victory at the Curragh, meaning Whirl remains at 10 furlongs for the Nassau Stakes during the Qatar Goodwood Festival. "Lambourn hasn't done anything since Sunday and probably won't for seven to 10 days," continued O'Brien. "His options are to be trained for the King George or have a little rest and maybe go for a Voltigeur and a St Leger, but we'll see what the lads want to do. He's a hardy customer, a brave horse. "We are thinking of the Nassau for Whirl and she's a hardy lady too. She could go there, and Minnie Hauk will be trained for the Irish Oaks.
