12 armed robberies in 10 days – residents urged to stay vigilant
Vosman and the surrounding areas have experienced a surge in armed robberies, with police reporting 12 separate incidents between June 24 and July 3. According to Vosman Police Spokesperson Captain Vusi Mnisi, the incidents have mostly occurred in the early morning or evening, with suspects allegedly armed with firearms and knives targeting residents walking alone in poorly lit streets. One of the first reported incidents took place on June 24 in Vosman, where a woman walking alone was allegedly robbed by three unknown men. The suspects allegedly threatened her with a knife and warned her not to pursue them. A passing motorist helped chase down one of the suspects, who was arrested at the scene. Later that day, in KwaGuqa Extension 10, a man walking home was allegedly robbed at gunpoint by a group of unknown men. Minutes afterward, in Lynnville, another victim was allegedly forced to hand over a cellphone at gunpoint by three men. Two of them were later traced and arrested. On June 26, two women hitchhiking near KG Mall on the N4 were allegedly forced into a black VW Polo by three men. Once inside, they were allegedly robbed of cash and cellphones and forced to hand over bank PINs so that the suspects could transfer money. According to police, the women were later dumped in the bushes near Balmoral. The suspects did not conceal their faces and may be identifiable. Another robbery occurred on June 28 in Ackerville when a woman walking to work was nearly pulled into a vehicle by a group of men. Though she managed to resist, they allegedly stole her phone and bag before fleeing. On June 27, a man walking past Khutsong Cemetery in KwaGuqa Extension 5 was confronted by three men, two of whom allegedly carried firearms. After allegedly threatening and assaulting him, they stole two phones and groceries. That same weekend, a resident in Thushanang was allegedly followed home by three men posing as street patrollers. Once inside his yard, they allegedly robbed him at gunpoint of his cellphone, cash, and clothing. In another incident near a secondary school in Ackerville, a man was approached by men in a blue VW Polo. They allegedly pointed a firearm at him and robbed him of a cellphone and sneakers. On July 2, in KwaGuqa Extension 9, a man was stopped by three men in a black GTI Golf. After pretending to ask for directions, two men exited the vehicle, allegedly threatened him with a gun and a knife, and stole his belongings. According to police, the victim said he could identify one of the suspects. On July 3, a man was allegedly robbed on St Mthimunye Street in Ackerville after being approached by a suspect pretending to need a favour. When the victim refused to hand over his phone, the man allegedly pulled out a firearm, demanded the PIN, and fled with the phone. Later that same evening, in KwaGuqa Extension 7, a woman carrying recently withdrawn cash was allegedly approached by two alleged robbers. One allegedly pointed a firearm at her and demanded the cash, which she handed over out of fear for her life. According to police, the suspects were known to the complainant. Captain Mnisi added, 'We continue to urge residents to remain vigilant, avoid walking alone in the dark, and report any suspicious activity immediately.'
