Does Jaylen Brown's future lie away from the Boston Celtics?
Every summer, Jaylen Brown's name is floated in trade talks. The 2024 NBA Finals MVP is often viewed as a dispensable member of the Boston Celtics' rotation, despite being one of the top forwards in the NBA and a key player in Joe Mazzulla's rotation. This summer has been no different, despite the fact that Brown is set to embrace a leading role on the Celtics roster due to Jayson Tatum's injury-induced absence. Recently, Brown sat down for an interview with Noa Dalzell of Celtics Blog. During the discussion, he noted how he hasn't always felt capable of being his true self around the city, noting politics as a potential reason. 'It's been a long journey here in Boston,' Brown said. 'I've had to deal with a lot. I feel like I haven't been able to be myself in certain capacities — because of the politics, and because maybe people feel uncomfortable with who I am.' Those comments were quickly used to create a new wave of potential trade talk surrounding Brown. In a recent episode of "WEEI Afternoons," the concept of Brown potentially being traded, either this season or next, was a primary discussion point among the two hosts. Rafael Devers reportedly stood up workout with Giants legend Will Clark
Rafael Devers reportedly stood up workout with Giants legend Will Clark originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area History could be repeating itself for Rafael Devers and the Giants, and not in a good way. Advertisement San Francisco acquired the star slugger in a blockbuster trade with the Boston Red Sox last month, but Devers might already have gotten off on the wrong foot with one Giants legend. 'We were in San Francisco right after that trade happened,' Red Sox broadcaster Will Flemming shared Monday on WEEI Sports Radio's 'WEEI Afternoons.' 'They don't yet know what is going to happen with the player. I was there the second day. Will Clark was there to work on ground balls with him at first base and Rafi didn't show up. 'So that's the person that these guys [the Red Sox] have been dealing with for a long time.' While Red Sox manager Alex Cora labeled the stunning trade as 'not personal,' several reports indicate Devers left Boston with souring relationships around the organization. Advertisement Devers appeared to have a fallout with the Red Sox over his role with the team. Devers played third base for the first eight years of his MLB career before Boston moved him to DH this season to make way for Alex Bregman, whom the Red Sox signed to a three-year, $120 million free-agent contract this past offseason. But there also was speculation that Devers was a bad teammate and a bad influence in the Red Sox clubhouse. Even Red Sox and baseball icon David Ortiz openly was critical of Devers and his communication, or lack thereof, over the years. 'You can't imagine how many times I wrote to Devers trying to give him advice, but unfortunately, he has communication problems,' Ortiz told Dominican baseball insider Hector Gomez. 'He almost never returned my messages, but I don't blame him. 'He's a good guy, but he definitely needs to improve his communication. He should find an advisor to help him with that.' Advertisement Ortiz continued to take subtle jabs at Devers, sharing a social media post to his Instagram story about what it means to play for the Red Sox organization. 'The thing is that to have some like this at Boston you have to just not be a hitter you have to be the full package a all the way around player… go Sox.' After multiple clashes between Devers and the organization, a fresh start seemed like the best solution for all parties involved. That continues to be the hope for Devers and San Francisco. But was Devers standing up Clark just a miscommunication? The Giants surely hope so. In 20 games since his arrival with the Giants, Devers has still only played DH, is slashing .240/.348/.387 with just two home runs and 9 RBI, and has struck out 28 times. After multiple clashes between Devers and the organization, a fresh start seemed like the best solution for all parties involved. That continues to be the hope for Devers and San Francisco. Luckily for Devers, Clark was understanding of the situation and looked at it with an open mind. Clark believes Devers didn't show up to take grounders with him during that Giants-Red Sox series because he didn't want to be at first base, a position he refused to play with Boston, right in front of the dugout of his former team. Advertisement Clark revealed that Giants manager Bob Melvin and third-base coach Matt Williams asked him to meet with Devers and work with him around first base. And while he was forgiving of being stood up, Clark issued a stern warning to Devers for the next time he's in town. 'Friday, Saturday, Sunday, he did not come out at all. Period. Not at all,' Clark shared on the 'Deuces Wild with Eric Byrnes & Will Clark' podcast. 'I completely understand. But Rafael Devers, next time I'm in San Francisco, your ass will be on the field at first base. Just letting you know that. Even if I have to go grab you by the f–king back of the neck and drag your ass out there, you will be at first base.' In 20 games since his arrival with the Giants, Devers has still only played DH, is slashing .240/.348/.387 with just two home runs and 9 RBI, and has struck out 28 times. Why the Boston Celtics should avoid adding Damian Lillard
Since the Milwaukee Bucks waived Damian Lillard, the Boston Celtics have been rumored to hold an interest in the veteran guard. Lillard, 35, is currently sidelined with an Achilles tendon tear. He's expected to miss the upcoming 2025-26 season; therefore, like Jayson Tatum, we shouldn't expect to see him until October 2026. Lillard is an All-Star, and he's also one of the best offensive guards in the NBA. However, his style of play could be counterproductive for how Boston likes to approach things on the court. Lillard needs to dominate the ball to be at his best; he also needs a high-volume shot diet, averaging over 17 per game this past season. Furthermore, his defense leaves a lot to be desired, which could irk Joe Mazzulla, who likes his stars to be two-way talents. It's for those reasons that a recent episode of "WEEI Afternoons" was dedicated to the subject of why the Celtics should resist the temptation to acquire Lillard on the free agency market. The hosts dove into a range of issues that could occur by adding the veteran ballhandler, including the fact that ball-dominant guards have seldom worked when playing next to Tatum and Jaylen Brown. Are teams really interested in trading for star Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown?
Are teams really interested in trading for star Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown? Are teams really interested in trading for star Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown? The Georgia native is one of the top 20 or so players in the NBA, so there should be no reason that they would not want to have him on their roster, save for the cap concerns created by the second apron of the NBA's collective bargaining agreement (CBA). But they also have to think there is at least a chance they might be able to pry him away from the Celtics to let their interest in Brown slip to the league's news breakers, and we have recently heard from ESPN's Shams Charania that there is indeed interest in trading for the Cal alum. The folks behind the "WEEI Boston's Sports Original" YouTube channel put together a clip from their "WEEI Afternoons" show to talk it over recently. Take a look at the clip embedded below to hear what they had to say.
