Mystics upset league-leading Lynx in final minute
Shakira Austin's putback and Sug Sutton's strip-and-score led the host Washington Mystics to a last-minute 68-64 victory over the WNBA-leading Minnesota Lynx on Tuesday. HT Image The Lynx had to battle without league-leading scorer Napheesa Collier, but held a 64-62 lead with a minute to play. Austin followed a teammate's missed 3-pointer with a putback to tie the game with 32 seconds left, and Sutton picked Courtney Williams' pocket and scored a breakaway layup with 27.2 seconds remaining to claim the lead. A pair of free throws by Sonia Citron clinched the win. Austin tallied 19 points and seven rebounds to pace the Mystics . Sutton dropped in 12 points and rookie Kiki Iriafen added 11 points and 11 boards for the Mystics. The Mystics connected on just 37 percent of their shots but ruled the final minute for the victory. Minnesota stumbled as Collier missed her second consecutive game after suffering a back injury a week ago in a win over Las Vegas. Without Collier, Minnesota leaned heavily on center Alanna Smith. The seventh- year pro dropped in a career-high 26 points, shooting 9 for 17 and adding six blocked shots. Jessica Shepard, who replaced Collier in the starting lineup, tallied 12 points and 15 rebounds. Washington was tested early as the Lynx jumped to a 20-6 lead on a three-point play from Kayla McBride with 3:22 left in the opening quarter. But the Mystics reeled off a 14-2 run to pull within 22-20 at the end of the quarter. The Mystics took a seven-point lead early in the second quarter and a 39-37 advantage into halftime. They pushed ahead 49-42 on Sutton's 3-pointer four minutes into the third quarter. Minnesota answered with a 13-5 run, taking the lead when Shepard's lay-in just beat the third-quarter buzzer, setting up a back-and-forth final stanza. The Lynx's 64 points was a season-low. Minnesota tallied 19 turnovers, with Williams committing 10. Field Level Media This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text.

2025 WNBA MVP Odds: Betting, futures, predictions including Caitlin Clark, Napheesa Collier, more awards
It's Week 6 of the WNBA season and the MVP gap is closing between Napheesa Collier and Caitlin Clark, while Paige Bueckers, the former Husky, returned to Connecticut to put on a show for the crowd and pull away as a larger favorite in the Rookie of the Year race. All odds are courtesy of DraftKings and subject to change. WNBA MVP Ladder: Napheesa Collier (-275) didn't suit up on Saturday in the 16-point win over Los Angeles, meanwhile Caitlin Clark (+225) went for 11 points, 9 assists, 7 rebounds and 0-for-7 from three in a loss to Golden State, then 19 points, 10 assists, and 1-of-10 from three in a loss against Las Vegas. Since coming back from injury, Clark has posted 25 turnovers in four games and shot 1-of-17 from three in the last two games, so I am still team Collier for MVP. As the third player in this race, it's now a battle per the sports books between teammates Breanna Stewart (+5000) and Sabrina Ionescu (+6000), plus reigning MVP A'ja Wilson (+5000). Wilson posted a combined 44 points, 21 rebounds, 10 turnovers, 5 blocks, 4 assists, and 3 steals in the last two games with a 1-1 record as she returned from injury. Ionescu has recorded 34, 34, and 16 points over the last three games to climb the ladder, but a 3-for-16 shooting performance in a loss to the Mercury, then missed the following game versus the Storm with a neck injury that doesn't seem to be long-term. Stewart scored 35 points on 11-for-17 shooting and 10 made free-throws against the Mercury, then followed that up with 18 points,9 rebounds, and 7 assists in a 10-point loss to the Storm. Neither Ionescu, Stewart or Wilson are worth MVP long shots at this point. Due to the Liberty being arguably the best team, Stewart and Ionescutwo will likely be top-five candidates all season, but outsiders to win the award. WNBA DPOY Ladder: Alanna Smith (+500) has recorded at least two blocks in three consecutive games and 10 out of 12 on the season. Smith's 2.2 blocks per game, ranks second behind A'ja Wilson (2.6). The former two-time DPOY winner (2022, 2023), Wilson (+175), also ranks fifth in the WNBA with 1.9 steals per game and the second-highest usage rate (30.1%). Napheesa Collier (+350) missed her last game and that cost her some ground in this market, while Jonquel Jones had a big night for the Liberty posting a double-double with a steal against the Dream but played only 9 minutes against the Mercury as she reaggravated her ankle injury and will miss a month of action. Gabby Williams (+500) has risen up the DPOY board thanks to her WNBA-leading 2.6 steals per game, while her Seattle teammate Ezi Magbegor (+800) has reentered the chat. On June 17 versus the Sparks, Magbegor recorded six blocks, then two games later against the Liberty, she had three steals and one block. Williams posted four and eight steals in those same two games, plus four or more steals in four of the past five games. WNBA ROY Ladder: Paige Bueckers (-1200) posted 21 points and 7 assists against the Sun, then 20 points, 9 rebounds, and 7 assists versus the Mystics to move from -950 to -1200. After dropping 35 points in her return from injury against the Mercury, Bueckers has averaged 19.2 points, 5.2 assists, and 4.2 rebounds over four games. Sonia Citron (+2500) is making ground to be the runner-up to Bueckers as she has now scored at least 10 points in all 13 games and coming off a season-high 27 points versus Dallas on 9-of-13 from the field (4/7 from three). For her Washington teammate, Kiki Iriafen (+950), after double-doubling in four straight games, she has failed to double-double in nine consecutive. However, Iriafen is coming off a 19-point showing against Dallas, which was one point shy of her season-high. Both look to be the only competition to Bueckers for ROY this season. Vaughn Dalzell's WNBA Futures Bets: 2 units: Stephanie White to win Coach of the Year (+115) 2 units: Minnesota Lynx to win Championship (+340) 2 units: A'ja Wilson to win MVP (+225) 2 units: Napheesa Collier to win MVP (+150) 0.5 unit: Jonquel Jones to win DPOY (+3000) 0.5 unit: Napheesa Collier to win MVP (+300) 0.5 unit: Angel Reese to win DPOY (+2000) 0.5 unit: Aliyah Boston to win DPOY (+3500) 0.5 unit: Kamila Cardoso to win DPOY (+5500) 0.5 unit: Aliyah Boston to win Most Improved Player (+1500) 0.5 unit: Kamila Cardoso to win Most Improved Player (+3000) Please bet responsibly. League-best Lynx riding momentum on visit to Mystics
The WNBA-leading Minnesota Lynx have wrapped up a spot in the Commissioner's Cup final against Indiana on July 1, but first they look to continue their momentum as they pay a visit to the Washington Mystics on Tuesday. HT Image The Lynx hope to return WNBA top scorer Napheesa Collier to the lineup after she missed a game and a half with a back injury. Collier was hurt early in Tuesday's 76-62 win over Las Vegas, finishing with a season-low seven points. She sat out Saturday's 82-66 win over Los Angeles. Collier is averaging a league-high 24.4 points per game, but her starting spot was filled by Maria Kliundikova. Making her second career start, Kliundikova tallied 12 points and eight rebounds in the win. "We were sort of unsure what was going to happen," Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve said of the move to replace Collier. "We spent a couple days looking at various options ... and then you get the players involved, and so they sort of put us over the top in a direction. They're very comfortable with ." Kayla McBride picked up most of the scoring slack from Collier as she tallied a season-high 29 points, shooting 9-for-13 and 5-for-7 from 3-point range. The Lynx shot 53.6 percent overall but did have 21 turnovers without Collier. " should be back, probably on a plane tomorrow," Reeve said on Saturday. "So we should expect her . ... That's what we think is going to happen." The rookie-driven Mystics come into the game off a 91-88 overtime win over Dallas. Instrumental in the victory were first-year standouts Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen . Leading scorer Brittney Sykes was held to eight points, but the young stars helped deliver the win as Citron's tiebreaking 3-pointer with 12 seconds left was the difference. "We have two special players here," Mystics coach Sydney Johnson said of his rookie stars. "It comes down to more than talent. It's the professionalism." Washington is currently one-half game behind Indiana and Las Vegas for the No. 8 spot in the league. Caitlin Clark to miss 5th game with quad strain, but could start 'ramping' up
Caitlin Clark will sit out a fifth consecutive game with a quadriceps strain when Indiana visits Atlanta on Tuesday, shifting the focus to whether the Fever star will return against the WNBA champion New York Liberty. Indiana coach Stephanie White stopped short Monday of saying Clark had been cleared for basketball activities, saying the club was ready for the reigning Rookie of the Year to start "ramping back up." The Fever initially said Clark would miss at least two weeks, and it has been 16 days since Clark was injured in a 90-88 loss to the Liberty. She finished the game, saying later adrenaline likely allowed her to play with the strain. Clark told reporters last week she was targeting a Tuesday return, but said she wouldn't rush it. White reiterated the patience part Monday. The rematch with the Liberty isn't until Saturday at home, which should give Clark some decent practice time. "We're going to be smart, and we're going to be cautious and we're going to play the long game and work her back in very intentionally," White said. Clark is averaging 19 points, 9.3 assists and six rebounds in four games this season. This is the first time in her college or pro career that she's missed games. She averaged 19.2 points and a WNBA-leading 8.4 assists as a rookie. The Fever are also without guard Sophie Cunningham, who has been limited to four games by ankle injury. White ruled out Cunningham against the Dream. Indiana was 2-2 when Clark suffered the quad strain, and has gone 2-2 in the four games since. They defeated the Washington Mystics in their first Commissioner's Cup game, and then defeated the Sky, 79-52, in a surprise rout in their second Cup matchup.
