Lifeguards sprang into action and fellow surfers used a leash to act as a tourniquet. Speaking from his hospital bed, Bender recalled the horror. 'I felt it clamp down like a bear trap out of nowhere,' he told the outlet. 'I never saw the shark, but it bit really forcefully. It felt like electricity.' He revealed he was squeezing the area left mangled by the shark bite. Bender had to undergo surgery but his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening. But, doctors had to repair nerves and tendons. Bender faces a period of time off his surfboard but hasn't been deterred by the attack. "For some reason, I got to take a little break, but I'll be back out there," he vowed. New Smyrna Beach is known as the shark bite capital of the world. Since the 1880s, there have been more than 300 shark attacks along the stretch of coastline. More recently, there have been up to 10 attacks at New Smyrna Beach per year. 3 More to follow... Loose kangaroo caught on video hopping down Florida road

May 6 (UPI) -- A Florida resident captured video when she came across something unusual -- a kangaroo hopping down the middle of a road. Kaila Mullins captured footage of the Australian animal hopping through Hickory Tree Road in St. Cloud on Monday. "It must have stayed there for a solid minute or two, just hopping in front of me, not wanting to go anywhere before it went off and dove under the fence to get into the farmland," Mullins told WOFL-TV. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said authorities are aware of a loose kangaroo in the area, but its owner has not yet been identified. The state keeps records of all owners of kangaroos and similar exotic animals, but has not yet determined whether the marsupial escaped from a licensed owner. The sighting came about a week after a kangaroo wandered onto Interstate 85 between Tuskegee and Auburn in Macon County, Ala., April 29. The animal in that incident caused lengthy traffic delays and one collision before being tranquilized and returned to its home at a petting zoo.

Orlando TV Anchors Rush to Seek Shelter Live on Air as Tornado Hits News Station: ‘Under Your Desks!'

Journalists at a Florida news station experienced a tornado live on air during an intense broadcast caught on camera. WOFL-TV meteorologist Brooks Garner was warning residents in Orlando and surrounding areas to be on high alert for tornado activity when his newsroom got the shock of a lifetime on Monday, March 10. 'Take shelter!' he yelled to his coworkers as storm cameras captured debris being tossed around by strong gusts of wind and rain around 9:30 a.m. local time. 'We're catching debris right now on the roof,' Garner said. 'Seek shelter immediately. Get under your desks, guys. Anchors, under your desks!' An EF2 tornado made its way through Seminole County and damaged property in Lake Mary, the news station reported. According to the National Weather Service, EF2's, which are measured on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, are considered strong and can reach between 111 mph to 135 mph. 'This is a confirmed tornado,'' Garner said, making note that their building's power began to flicker. 'This is a very serious situation. This is a real, live tornado. It just hit our station.' "I've been doing this for a very long time. That's the first time a tornado has hit me while I'm doing the weather," Garner added during the broadcast. The footage quickly went viral. Felt his nerves rattle which makes him human of course, but never stuttered or totally lost his cool,' a viewer commented on a video shared to the news station's YouTube account. Another wrote, 'Go Brooks! That was scary and amazing, true character is tested under pressure and he kept warning residents as his team is getting hit!!!' The incident may have rattled many, but no fatalities were reported. Alan Harris, spokesperson for Seminole County Emergency Management, reported damage such as a collapsed home in Longwood, overturned cars, trees in the road and downed power lines, the news station reports. The only part of the collapsed home that wasn't destroyed was where the two residents who lived there had taken shelter, Fox Weather reported, citing fire officials. "This couple moved into the room of safety," Harris said. "That's what we want them to do." Additionally, approximately 500 people experienced a loss of power during the weather event.
