WWE 2K25 icon claims new update is 'moment of completion in video game industry'

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video It's a big day for WWE 2K25, as the game gets a major new update and comes to a new format. As well as the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 version of the record-breaking game, the Fearless DLC pack for WWE 2K25 is available today, featuring New Jack, Penta, and Jordynne Grace amongst the new characters being added to the game. New Jack is a fascinating one for fans, having built a fierce legacy in ECW as one of the boldest, most violent and most controversial figures in wrestling. ECW maestro and WWE Hall of Famer Paul Heyman exclusively told Metro why today's DLC is such an important release for the series. 'This is a moment of completion in the entire video game industry,' he said. 'You cannot deny New Jack's influence in sports entertainment/pro wrestling culture, nor should you deny his influence on video games.' Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. Heyman pointed out how a lot of people working in the business today grew up as fans of ECW and WWE during their childhood. 'Most of the people that are writing the codes that then become the video games were ECW or WWE fans,' he added. 'And I mean, are you telling me that those who make Grand Theft Auto weren't influenced by New Jack? Come on!' New Jack is part of this week's Fearless DLC, with he, Penta and Jordynne Grace joined by Hall of Famer Bull Nakano, and YouTuber KSI in a Prime bottle costume. The Hardcore Icon gets special treatment too, when it comes to players using him in one-on-one, no disqualification-type matches such as Extreme Rules and Falls Count Anywhere. For those mode, New Jack will come out carrying a guitar and trash can full of weapons (including a crutch) which he'll spill in the ring ready to use when the bell rings. As if that wasn't enough, his entrance music will keep playing throughout the bout, which fans will remember well from his heyday. Heyman, 58, noted how including him in the roster for WWE 2K25 – which is the highest rated franchise title in Xbox history, with the same game now available on the Switch 2 – is a befitting way to honour his legacy. He said: 'Oh my God! What a fantastic idea to pay tribute to someone that has been such an influence on not only the culture of pro wrestling, but on the culture of video games, because of the influence that we've had on those who write the games.' In this year's WWE 2K25, Heyman takes centre stage in the Showcase mode, which Switch 2 gamers will be able to play as they explore the history of Roman Reigns and The Bloodline. More Trending 'I approached it with the respect for the history of the entire industry and for that family that anyone that understands or has studied the history should have. I approached it with great reverence,' he said of his role as a narrator in the mode. 'There are so many gamers now that are going to learn about an actual education within a video game. Imagine that! So if you want to go to a wrestling college, or you want to go to WWE University, your professor's name is Paul Heyman.' WWE 2K25 is available now for the Nintendo Switch 2. New Jack is available as part of the Fearless DLC pack. WWE SummerSlam airs on Netflix on August 2 and 3. Got a story? 'Inheriting a law firm would've been easy – I became a WWE legend instead'

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video His name is Paul Heyman. He's a WWE Hall of Famer. A wrestling pioneer. It could've been very different. The 59-year-old Wiseman and Oracle has helped shape the careers of fellow WWE legends from CM Punk and Roman Reigns to Brock Lesnar and countless more. This week he's promoting the Nintendo Switch 2 version of WWE 2K25, which drops on July 23, but the game's cover star exclusively told Metro how a career in law was a real option earlier in life. 'My father was a highly respected personal injury attorney in the Bronx. That man would walk into the courthouse and you'd see other lawyers and bailiffs and even judges to sit there and bow down to my father because he was so respected,' he recalled. 'It would have been very easy to just go get a law degree and inherit his law firm – because he was a sole practitioner, it was just him. Richard S. Heyman Professional Corporation, that was it. 'But I carved out my own niche in this world, and there is a thrill and a joy to that that cannot be matched by being a potential 'nepo baby.' ' Instead, Heyman found his way into the wrestling business initially as a photographer, before finding his feet as a manager and eventually turning ECW into a pioneering movent in sports entertainment history. Despite his rich legacy and influence, he doesn't want his own children – daughter Azalea and son Jacob, both in their early 20s – to follow in his footsteps. 'I want them to carve their own niche,' he explained. 'They don't have to measure up to what I've accomplished.' Wrestling is Heyman's passion, and for the last several years he's been at the heart of WWE's iconic Bloodline Saga, initially by Roman Reigns' side. The pair 'controlled the Undisputed WWE Championship for over 1,300 days, set box office records' and ushered in the TKO merger and Netflix deal. 'When you look back 50 years from now on, the contributions of Roman Reigns and Paul Heyman cannot be denied,' he said, while giving nods to Jimmy Uso, Jey Uso, Solo Sikoa and Sami Zayn for their roles. His history with the 'real life Bloodline' goes back to Roman's uncle and father Afa and Sika, the Wild Samoans, which all led to him narrating this year's Bloodline Showcase mode in WWE 2K25. 'So many gamers now are going to get an actual education within a video game. Imagine that,' he quipped. 'If you want to go to Wrestling College, or you want to go to WWE University, your professor's name is Paul Heyman.' Despite those deep ties, at WrestleMania Heyman turned on the Tribal Chief, and best friend CM Punk, to align himself with Seth Rollins. 'I never think short term. I always think long term. And the long term to me was that Roman Reigns and I had accomplished everything that we could,' he said of the major creative shift. 'It was time for Seth Rollins to elevate himself to be declared the greatest in ring performer of this or any other generation.' Rollins is injured after an unfortunate moment at Saturday Night's Main Event last weekend, but Heyman is still focused on helping his allies Bronson Reed and Bron Breakker. 'The natural progression is, 'What's the main event of WrestleMania 42, 43, 44, 45, 50?,'' Heyman pondered. 'It was time to get Bron Breakker ready for his future, which is to main event multi Wrestlemanias.' He added: 'And for Bronson Reed to get the credit as a monster that he deserves, since he was so dramatically underappreciated and underutilised as well.' The Hall of Famer acknowledged the real life elements of WrestleMania this year, as he walked out with Punk for the his best friend's first ever main event at the Showcase of the Immortals. However, he revealed: 'The moment I laid the law down to Roman Reigns and CM Punk and handed the chair to Seth Rollins, the first thing that popped into my head was, 'Wow, this is an all time WrestleMania moment. And now we're going to have to top it.'' His reputation as a creative genius comes with a lot of pressure, but Heyman doesn't quite look at it that way. '[There is] a common denominator in anyone that I've had the privilege of working with closely – be it Brock Lesnar, be it CM Punk, be it Roman Reigns, be it Seth Rollins, be it Bronson Reed, Bron Breakker,' he explained. 'They rise to the occasion. They respond to the pressure, and it creates an environment in which they give you an even greater performance.' So what keeps Heyman going, decades into his career? He won't be 'riding off into the sunset' any time soon. More Trending 'I look for the next spiritual orgasm that I can share with a stadium filled with 80 to 100,000 people, because otherwise, all I'm doing is living off the name,' he pondered. 'While my name is Paul Heyman, and people know it worldwide, I don't want to live off of the name. I want to earn the reputation that I've built.' Wrestling icon, 51, is 'officially retired' as they reveal WWE future

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video A wrestling legend has officially announced his retirement 21 years after his debut match. TNA Wrestling icon Abyss, who is making history as his character appears in WWE 2K25 as part of today's Dunk & Destruction DLC pack, hasn't had a match since 2019 when he joined WWE behind the scenes as a producer. Asked if he would appear in the Royal Rumble, Abyss – whose real name is Chris Park – exclusively told Metro: 'I'm officially retired. 'I'm so enthralled, and just intertwined with what I'm doing now as a producer, you know – I don't have any interests either. [Wrestling again is] not an option.' Park, 51, admitted that the punishment he put his body through over the years has taken his toll. 'I'm getting up there in age, I'm still a young man,' he quipped. 'But my the old 'bump card' is tapped out for me.' Instead, Park – who has never wrestled for WWE, but had a brief on screen stint as AJ Styles' statistician on SmackDown – is 'so focused on being the best producer I can be'. Since February 2019, the man best known to fans as 'The Monster' Abyss has swapped his reputation for bloody and violent wrestling in favour of a career helping today's WWE stars plan out their matches. He is grateful for his second career, and getting to work with and learn from the likes of Paul 'Triple H' Levesque, Michael Hayes, Ed Koski, Brian James and more. 'It's an incredible learning experience. There's some just amazing, brilliant minds,' he smiled. 'When you get three or four minds and three or four sets of eyeballs looking at something, and you get a collaboration – that's always when you get the best product, in the end.' In another unexpected twist, Abyss will become the first TNA character in a WWE video game, having never featured on screen for the company. He's in the newest WWE 2K25 DLC alongside Hall of Famer The Great Khali, and NBA stars Tyrese Haliburton, Shaquille O'Neal and Jalen Brunson. Park described it as a 'bucket list moment', especially seeing his iconic persona in a WWE game with his beloved theme music and signature weapon Janice. 'I never imagined in a million years that I would have the opportunity to be in a WWE video game,' he beamed with pride, before revealing he was given a full body scan to accurately bring Abyss back to life. 'It's been an incredible process, you know, from the scans and the different elements to make it happen, make it come to life,' he added. It's also been surreal for the 51-year-old former world champion to see the partnership between TNA and WWE. 'My entire run at TNA, which was a pretty significant amount of time, 2002 to 2019 … TNA and WWE working together, that wasn't an option back then,' he said. 'It's an incredible moment for TNA, for WWE. It's just been fantastic.' Over the years, Abyss could have become a WWE superstar, with Park previously confirming offers to work with The Undertaker at WrestleMania. 'There were options there,' he admitted. '[But] I was a TNA guy. I was a lifer. I had been there since the very, very beginning, since the doors opened. For me, it was just a loyalty thing.' Abyss gave TNA so many incredible moments while putting his body on the line in the name of entertainment. He may have built his reputation on being a hardcore wrestling, but the man behind the mask admitted even he got 'scared'. 'Being nervous is a good thing. It keeps you sharp,' he explained. 'Every risky spot that I ever did in wrestling, obviously there was a high risk to it, but it was calculated. 'I tried to be smart about it, and but I was always nervous, and some of them were scary. The Bubba and D'Von chokeslam off the side of the stage through the fire table is one I perhaps wish I had back.' Despite overtures from WWE, Park would have found it 'so incredibly hard' to leave, as his history 'weighed on him' as while making a decision. 'I was there for all the good and all the bad, and all the in between,' he chuckled. 'The friendships I forged there were just amazing.' More Trending WWE fans will have to play as Abyss in WWE 2K25 to bring dream matches to life, and Park has some in mind. 'You gotta do Abyss/Undertaker,' he said. 'Then Kane. I had the opportunity to work with Mick Foley in TNA, but that'll be up there. 'I've got to revisit the classics, Abyss versus AJ Styles. Maybe in WWE 2k25 I can actually beat AJ!'
