On Monday Night RAW, general manager Adam Pearce informed AJ Styles that Intercontinental Champion "Dirty" Dominik Mysterio was injured and their match for the title at Night of Champions was officially canceled. This news is particularly surprising since Mysterio hasn't wrestled in a match since the June 9 episode of Raw and has been featured on television since then. It remains to be seen if this is a legitimate injury or is simply a kayfabe reason for Mysterio to miss the event. Image via WWE A select list of WWE superstars have been remarkable WWE Intercontinental Champions in the modern era. The WWE Intercontinental Championship has been one of the most prestigious titles in WWE history. From the days of the inaugural titleholder, Pat Patterson, to the present day, the championship has served as a ladder for rising stars to ascend to the next level. It has also helped many WWE stars to become workhorses of the promotion. Looking at the modern era of the Sports Entertainment juggernaut, here are the top five superstars who were at the top with the WWE Intercontinental Championship in their hands: 5. Dolph Ziggler Dolph Ziggler began his rise as a singles star in WWE with the WWE Intercontinental Championship. The showoff has been a part of some of the most stellar matches when the workhorse title was at stake. Moreover, he had even put his career on the line to win the championship from The Miz one time. In total, he became a 6-time WWE Intercontinental Champion, and the title has been highly important to his career. 4. Kevin Owens Kevin Owens made his impactful debut on WWE's main roster in 2015 against John Cena. Months later, The Prizefighter claimed his first major singles title in the big leagues, i.e, WWE Intercontinental Championship. He won it from Ryback, and that title win marked a significant push for him during the early stages of his career. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo He won the title another time, becoming an overall two-time champion. 3. Seth Rollins The WWE Intercontinental Championship only gave further boost to Seth Rollins' hard-earned status as the true workhorse of WWE in the modern era. The Visionary won his first IC title on the Grandest Stage of Them All, WrestleMania 34, defeating The Miz and Finn Balor in a triple threat match. This win also completed his Grand Slam in the promotion. Moreover, Rollins produced some of the most memorable bouts when the workhorse title was involved and won the title a total of two times. 2. The Miz The Miz holds the record for the second most WWE Intercontinental Championship reigns at 8. In fact, when the title was not being featured much on television, The Awesome One took it and, using his charisma, hard work, and antics, made it relevant and prestigious again. The IC title has been extremely relevant to The Miz's career. At the same time, the championship garnered major attention because of him in the modern era. 1. Gunther Gunther can be argued as the greatest WWE Intercontinental Champion of all time. He held the title for 666 days, setting the record for both the longest singular reign and surpassing Pedro Morales' record. The workhorse title was a significant push to his main roster run that began in 2022 and led to him becoming a top star and ascending to main event status. 3 reasons John Cena should win the WWE Intercontinental Championship in his farewell tour

Image via WWE John Cena has not had the best history with the WWE Intercontinental Championship in the company. John Cena's farewell tour has been going strong and according to his plan of ruining wrestling. He did the unthinkable by turning heel and used his antics to win his 17th World Championship, setting the record for most World titles. However, there is one particular title that Cena has never won or even competed for on live television in WWE, the prestigious Intercontinental title. The workhorse championship has been a symbol of excellence and held by countless legends and Hall of Famers in the company over the years. With Cena only having a few months left before drawing the curtain on his in-ring career, here are three reasons he should win the IC title before retirement: 3. Steal opportunity in his plan to ruin wrestling John Cena let out years of frustrations and mistreatment of fans at the end of the 2025 WWE Elimination Chamber event. He has been on mission to ruin the one thing he loved for over two decades. In doing so, he can steal another opportunity, much like the Undisputed WWE title, by clinching the Intercontinental title, which has been a stepping stone for many rising stars over the years. 2. Double Champion to establish further dominance as a heel After defeating Cody Rhodes to become the Undisputed WWE Champion, John Cena has established his dominance over the WWE landscape with his demeanor as a monster heel. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo The WWE Intercontinental title might just add more to that run should Cena become a double champion. This would be the first time in close to two decades that Cena could hold two titles at once which would be a sight to witness on the farewell tour. 1. The GOAT needs to become the Grand Slam Champion John Cena officially claimed the status of 'The Greatest of All Time' at WrestleMania 41 when he dethroned Cody Rhodes. However, should his farewell tour end without an WWE Intercontinental Championship reign, he would never be able to claim the status of a 'Grand Slam Champion.' The Cenation Leader has claimed all titles, except the IC championship, which is being a barrier in his road to achieving Grand Slam. This makes its highly important for his legacy to capture the workhorse title before riding off in the sunset. Also read: Roman Reigns spotted off-duty after vanishing from WWE post-WrestleMania

MoreIn an interview with CasinoBeats, WCW legend Diamond Dallas Page (DDP) revealed that he absolutely loves Dominik Mysterio and believes that the crowd will turn him baby face, making him the "biggest baby face" in WWE. "Now wait a second. Let me ask you though, did you not feel the crowd when Mysterio went over? Did you not feel the entire crowd turning him babyface? They loved it," DDP said. "I was there in the front row live and they loved it. Like the kid's gonna be a hell of a babyface when he makes that flip. Hold onto that heel thing as long as you can, because when he flips, I'll tell you what that's a kid I'm a big fan of. "We both have the same birthday. I love his old man. But I am personally a big fan of how hard he's worked to get to this spot. I don't know many young kids who could have come in the way he did with his dad, not really know how to work at all, and has turned himself, man. "Whoever was in charge of making that happen, they are a king maker because that kid, he has got it all and some. It was interesting because he's the biggest heel, and yet at that last WrestleMania, boy you swear to God he was the biggest baby face of the company." When he ran back to the ring after winning the title, the crowd completely ate it up. Additionally, Mysterio continued to prove that he was worthy of holding onto the Intercontinental Championship when he faced off against Penta one-on-one at Backlash 2025. Mysterio once again became one of the top topics of conversation after the event, largely due to his suicide dive DDT and him hitting Liv Morgan's finishing move, ObLIVion. Needless to say, the future looks bright for Mysterio, whether he remains a hell or makes the turn to baby face.
