Cardinals head coach provides discouraging injury update on 1st-round pick
The post Cardinals head coach provides discouraging injury update on 1st-round pick appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Arizona Cardinals are set to start training camp, and they will be without some key players to start, including their first-round draft pick, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. 'Cardinals HC Jonathan Gannon told reporters today that first-round pick Walter Nolen III will miss time with a calf injury he suffered while getting ready for training camp,' Schefter wrote on X, formerly Twitter. Gannon was unsure if Nolen would be healthy enough when the regular season starts, and it will be interesting to see if they just bring him along slowly. 'He's recovering, rehabbing, and he'll get out there when he needs to get out there,' Gannon said. Nolen was selected by the Cardinals with the No. 16 pick of the NFL Draft, and the plan was for him to have a big impact on the team this season. Nolen played his last season of college ball at Ole Miss and put up the best numbers of his career, combining for 48 tackles, 6.5 sacks, and two fumble recoveries. He was named first-team All-SEC and the consensus All-American. The Cardinals have the depth to replace Nolen for the time being, and the hope is that they can stay afloat while he's absent. What will the Cardinals look like this season? With Nolen sidelined to start training camp, the Cardinals made sure they already had the depth on the line. The backend of the Cardinals' defense has high expectations, including Budda Baker, who has been a standout player in the unit. During the offseason, Baker was honest about how he feels about the team going into this season. 'I was drafted here, I know it was a different GM and a different coaching staff, but for me all I've been trying to do is do my job at a high level each and every day,' Baker said on The Mina Kimes Show. 'Of course, I'm a sore loser, I hate losing, and my career with the Cardinals has kind of been more losing than winning. 'But for me it's just stay ten toes down, you believe in what you believe in, and I believe in this coaching staff, I believe in these players that we brought in, free agency, draft, and very excited for the future.' The Cardinals have not done much winning over the past few years, but they have some things to look forward to this season, especially on offense, and this being the second season for Marvin Harrison Jr. Related: Cardinals' Will Johnson deal leaves 2 NFL 2025 Draft picks unsigned

Walter Nolen injury: Arizona Cardinals rookie DL expected to miss most of training camp
Fans won't get to see DL Walter Nolen III in training camp, as he suffered an offseason calf injury. Arizona Cardinals rookie defensive lineman Walter Nolen III, their first-round pick in the 2025 NFL draft, was officially placed on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list on Wednesday at the start of training camp with a calf injury. He will miss a significant amount of time. According to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport, Nolen will miss as much as all of training camp. He suffered the calf injury while training at the team facility in Tempe. Per Rapoport, "Nolen's timetable puts him right up against the start of the season, but the bulk of his recovery will be in camp." That is tough timing because it means he will have almost no full-contact work before the season begins, essentially making it unlikely he sees real playing time for probably the first half of the season. It is the second consecutive year that a first-round has missed time with a calf injury. Darius Robinson, drafted in the first round in 2024, missed the first 11 games of the season coming back from a calf injury. Cardinals rookie DE Walter Nolen III (calf) to miss start of camp
July 23 - Arizona Cardinals first-round pick Walter Nolen III is sidelined with a calf injury and there is no timeline for his return. The 21-year-old defensive lineman, selected 16th overall in the 2025 draft, was injured in offseason workouts, coach Jonathan Gannon told reporters on Wednesday. Gannon didn't rule out that the injury could stretch into the regular season. "I don't know that," Gannon told reporters. "I really don't. We'll see how it goes. Each one's a little bit different. Each injury's a little bit different. Each guy's a little bit different." Defensive tackle Bilal Nichols (neck) and outside linebacker BJ Ojulari (knee) will also be sidelined when Arizona opens training camp on Thursday. Nichols was limited to six games (five starts) due to stinger issues last season. Ojulari missed the entire season after tearing the ACL in his left knee during 2024 training camp. "They want to be out there with their teammates and practice," Gannon said. "We need all three. But when they're healthy, they'll play." Nolen was a consensus All-American last season while racking up 14 tackles for loss (including 6.5 sacks) for Ole Miss. He spent his previous two college seasons at Texas A&M. Nichols, 28, has 248 tackles and 14 sacks in 100 games (88 starts) over eight seasons with the Chicago Bears (2018-21), Las Vegas Raiders (2022-23) and Cardinals. Ojulari, 23, had 40 tackles and four sacks while playing in all 17 games as a reserve as a rookie in 2023. --Field Level Media

Cardinals rookie 1st-round pick dl walter nolen iii will 'miss some time' because of a calf injury
Arizona Cardinals rookie first-round pick Walter Nolen III has a calf injury and is expected to miss some time, coach Jonathan Gannon said on Wednesday. The defensive lineman was the No. 16 overall pick out of Ole Miss in April's draft. Gannon said that Nolen injured the calf while working out and preparing for the season. The 21-year-old is expected to be a big part of the Cardinals revamped defensive line as they try to make the playoffs for the first time since 2021. The Cardinals were 8-9 last season, which was a four-win improvement over the previous season. Gannon said he didn't know if Nolen's injury would linger into the regular season. One of Arizona's first-round picks last season – defensive lineman Darius Robinson – struggled with a calf injury that caused him to miss more than half of his rookie season. 'I really don't like to compare injuries, but (Nolen) hurt his calf,' Gannon said. 'It's a little different injury and they're obviously different people, so he's working hard to get back.' Gannon also said that defensive lineman Bilal Nichols (neck) and linebacker BJ Ojulari (knee) will be out at the beginning of camp as they continue to recover from injuries they suffered last season.
