Walters poised to become national rugby league coach
Rugby league legend Kevin Walters could be announced as Australia's new head coach as soon as Monday. The former Queensland and Brisbane mentor is poised to take charge of the Kangaroos for Australia's first Ashes tour in 22 years after the NRL season concludes. Walters was tight-lipped when quizzed about his link to the vacant role on Sunday, but expected an announcement to be made imminently. "I can't tell you anything. There'll be a decision made tomorrow," the former multi-premiership winning player said on Fox League's NRL coverage. "We'll just wait and see. Obviously I'd be very privileged and grateful to get the opportunity to coach Australia. "It's a privilege to put the green and gold on and to coach the side, even more so. We'll just see what happens tomorrow." The Australian Rugby League Commission has been on the hunt for a new Kangaroos boss since Mal Meninga stepped down to join expansion side the Perth Bears, who enter the NRL in 2027. Replacement options had been thin on the ground given ARLC rules prevent active club coaches from taking the role. That precluded South Sydney mentor Wayne Bennett from contention despite his interest, with Walters rocketing into the frame once favourite Brad Fittler pulled out to focus on his media duties. Cameron Smith, one of the greatest players of the modern era, had flagged his interest but is untested as a professional head coach. Walters coached Brisbane to the 2023 grand final, which the Broncos narrowly lost after a Penrith comeback, and was fired a year later after the side missed the 2024 finals. Prior to that, Walters led Queensland to victory in two of four State of Origin series as coach. Rugby league legend Kevin Walters could be announced as Australia's new head coach as soon as Monday. Between March 13, 2025 and May 1, 2025, he pursued a course of conduct in Llandeilo which amounted to the stalking of a woman, repeatedly calling and messaging her, visiting her home, and posting comments on social media. Griffiths also assaulted her by beating her at in Capel Isaac, Llandeilo, between June 1 and July 31, 2024. He was found guilty of that offence as well, and magistrates committed him to Swansea Crown Court for sentencing on July 25, 2025, remanding him in custody. Ben Barrett, 36, of Maes Y Farchnad, Llandeilo, was charged with breaching a sexual harm prevention order, contrary to section 354(1) and (4) of the Sentencing Act 2020. It is alleged that on June 18, 2025, in Llandeilo he deleted WhatsApp messages and internet history from a device, an act prohibited by an order imposed by Swansea Crown Court in March 2018. He did not enter a plea at Llanelli Magistrates' Court on July 8, 2025, and magistrates sent the case to Swansea Crown Court for trial on August 8, 2025, releasing Barrett on unconditional bail. Richard Hulley, 45, of Cwmamman Road, Glanaman, faced three charges at Llanelli Magistrates Court on July 7, 2025. He also faced a charge of breaking bail conditions by failing to reside at his address at night and abiding by the curfew put in place. Hulley pleaded guilty to the charge of breaking bail conditions but not guilty to the charges of coercive or controlling behaviour and committing an act intending to pervert the course of justice. On the same date, he admitted that he failed to provide a specimen to police when required, and another charge of driving whilst disqualified. Key piece unlocked in error-riddled game: Four things learnt in Broncos' win
Walsh (176 running metres and two linebreak assists) found a moment of magic early in the second half, firing a pass for Staggs in clear pasture, who passed back for his fullback to score. But what will please coach Michael Maguire was that his side found a way to win even when their attack failed them at times, forcing them to rely on their defence throughout their current five-game winning streak. 'You've just got to find a way to win at times, the good teams do that.' Adam Reynolds Walters cements his utility claim So congested has the hooker logjam been at the Broncos, their 2023 grand final rake Billy Walters was suddenly facing an uncertain future. But the 31-year-old has become the club's genuine X-factor off the bench in recent weeks, and added another chapter to that legend on Sunday. Just as the Titans threatened to orchestrate a boilover, with Jojo Fifita's second try of the night getting his team within six points, Walters jumped out of the ruck and threw a wild dummy to slice through virtually untouched. It proved the decisive blow to a plucky Gold Coast outfit, and followed his try-scoring heroics against the Bulldogs last week. 'We were challenged about six weeks ago about what was going on, but ... the work the players are putting in is starting to get the rewards.' Michael Maguire While Blake Mozer has been signed through to the end of 2027, Walters is doing all he can to prove he belongs in Brisbane beyond the end of his 2026 deal, leaving the off-contract Cory Paix's future uncertain. Broncos pack respond without Haas For a second straight week, the Broncos' engine room rose to the occasion in the absence of superstar prop Payne Haas. Haas was a late withdrawal from the clash, having battled a minor back concern for much of the year and in need of a rest following his effort for New South Wales in the State of Origin series decider. He joined Corey Jensen (calf) on the sideline, but the men who remained through the middle got through a mountain of work. Pat Carrigan (171 metres, 32 tackles), Xavier Willison (145 metres, 26 tackles), Kobe Hetherington (105 metres, 36 tackles), Talty (111 metres) and Jordan Riki (154 metres, five tackle busts) all got through plenty of work. Brendan Piakura failed a HIA attempting to ground a Reynolds grubber and failed to return. On the back of that, the Broncos' back five were able to generate some momentum - Staggs the headliner with 226 metres. 'We're probably known as a group around our attack, but I think our defence is starting to hit its stride with the way they work for each other.' Michael Maguire Titans ace set to miss rest of the season While under-siege Gold Coast coach Des Hasler dismissed talk of his shaky future at the club as 'unfounded speculation', he admitted he may need to dig his side off the bottom of the ladder without superstar fullback Keano Kini. Kini had suffered a herniated disc pressing against his spinal cord just two games into his season, and while it was initially hoped he would be fit to return for roughly the final month of the campaign, Hasler suggested that would not be the case. AJ Brimson has moved away from his budding halves combination with Jayden Campbell to reclaim the No.1 jumper, and he strove to ignite the Titans' attack to no avail, producing 185 running metres while coming up with a deft grubber for Fifita to score his first try. 'I don't think you'll see Keano on the field this year. That's the great value of AJ, he's able to play a number of positions, but it's the old cliché of the sort of headache you want as a coach.' Des Hasler

Retired Fremantle Docker Michael Walters farewells purple army at Optus Stadium
Fremantle has paid an emotional tribute to retiring club great Michael Walters at halftime of their blockbuster clash against Hawthorn. One of the Dockers' favourite sons was given a rockstar welcome at the halftime break, the purple army standing and roaring their appreciation. The veteran addressed the crowd while wrapped in a Dockers scarf before taking a lap of honour. Walters called time on his illustrious career after 239 games and 365 goals, including two in the 2013 grand final defeat to Hawthorn. Walters' family accompanied the Docker around the ground as he waved goodbye to fans before sharing a few words. Applause and cheers followed the former forward around the ground throughout the break and followed the 34-year-old back down the race after his final appearance. Fremantle also honoured Walters pre-game with the banner reading 'it will always be 'Sonny' in Fremantle'. The crafty small forward was even given his very own mural in Midland on Friday, his on-field deeds etched indelibly into the fabric of the suburb where he was raised and his passion for football was born. A few fans took to social media to give their hero one last thank you. James Mallia wrote: 'Much love hero, absolute legendary human. Thanks for everything.' An X account using the name Sarah suggested she hadn't worn the right makeup to handle the emotional moment. 'I'm not wearing waterproof mascara that may have been the biggest mistake,' she wrote.
