PM: Malaysia pays tribute to fallen heroes ahead of Warriors' Day

KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 — The service and sacrifices of the nation's warriors and heroes will forever be remembered in Malaysia's history, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He described their sacrifices as a crucial moment in ensuring the nation's peace, security and harmony remain strong and well-protected. 'May Allah place the warriors and soldiers who have shed blood and given their lives for the country's peace among the righteous and the faithful,' he said in a Facebook post. Earlier, Anwar and his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, accompanied His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim and Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, King and Queen of Malaysia, to a Yasin recital, tahlil and prayer ceremony at the National Mosque along with members of the security forces and the public in conjunction with this year's Warriors' Day celebration. Tomorrow, the 2025 Warriors' Day celebration will be held at Dataran Pahlawan Negara, Putrajaya. Warriors' Day is commemorated on July 31 each year to honour the struggle and sacrifices of the country's security personnel in ensuring prosperity and sovereignty, and has been organised in rotation by the Malaysian Armed Forces and the Royal Malaysia Police since 1968. — Bernama

‘Role of women in informal sector must be equally recognised'

KUALA LUMPUR: The role of women in the informal sector, especially housewives and family caregivers, needs to be recognised and appreciated, commensurate with their contributions to society and country, says Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail. Dr Wan Azizah, the wife of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, said women's policies formulated by the government, such as the National Policy on Women (DWN) and Women's Development Action Plan (PTPW) 2025-2030, not only emphasise the importance of empowering women but also increase public awareness of the major role played by this group in the country's progress. The policies are important in enhancing the role of women, raising their image and appreciating their contributions to the country, she added. 'These policies reflect the government's commitment towards a better future for women, especially in contributing to the national development process,' she said. Dr Wan Azizah said this at a press conference after officiating the DWN-PTPW 2025-2030 Special Walkabout at the Parliament building yesterday, Bernama reported. The event themed 'Women's Dignity, Strengthening the Nation' was also attended by Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching and Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker Alice Lau Kiong Yieng. At the same press conference, Nancy suggested that unpaid care work be valued equally with paid work, especially for women from vulnerable groups. 'We need to change it to something equivalent to paid care work,' she said.

Ministry taking serious, proactive measures to prevent fires in schools

PETALING JAYA: The Education Ministry is taking serious and proactive steps to prevent fire incidents at school premises following a disturbing rise in fire-related cases over the past few years. According to the Fire and Rescue Department's annual report, the number of school structure fires increased from 71 cases in 2021 to 152 cases in 2023 – more than doubling in just two years. In response, the ministry reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and comfort of students and school staff across the country. The ministry stated that it views the matter seriously and has long-standing procedures in place to curb such incidents. 'One of the main policies enforced is the Surat Pekeliling Ikhtisas No. 7 of 2009, which outlines fire prevention guidelines for schools. 'Under this directive, schools are reminded to take proactive measures, including conducting thorough inspections of electrical wiring in school buildings,' said its minister Fadhlina Sidek. Schools with outdated or unsafe wiring, particularly those exceeding the standards set by the Public Works Department (PWD), are required to submit immediate replacement requests to their respective state education departments. The ministry has also issued a reminder letter on building safety to all educational institutions under the ministry, dated June 12. These safety measures must be implemented to prevent fires that could result in property damage and loss of life. In terms of infrastructure upgrades, the ministry, in collaboration with the Electrical Engineering Branch of PWD, has carried out rewiring works at 409 schools across Peninsular Malaysia that are over 50 years old. The matter was raised during the Dewan Rakyat sitting by Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Dr Wan Ismail (PH-Bandar Tun Razak), who asked the education minister to state the actions and measures taken to prevent fire incidents at school premises, citing the significant increase in cases as reported by the Fire and Rescue Department. The ministry said it is committed to ensuring the safety and comfort of students and school staff across the country. – Pic from Sekolah Kebangsaan Jalan Sungai Besi Dua Kuala Lumpur/FBPIX
