Canada Open Super 300: Kidambi Srikanth Advances To Quarterfinals With Straight-Games Win
Srikanth advanced to the men's singles quarterfinals of the Canada Open Super 300 by defeating Wang Po-Wei 21-19, 21-12. He will face top seed Chou Tien Chen next. India's Kidambi Srikanth booked a spot in the men's singles quarterfinals of the Canada Open Super 300 badminton tournament with a commanding straight-game victory over Wang Po-Wei of Chinese Taipei on Thursday. The 2021 World Championships silver medallist and a key member of India's victorious 2022 Thomas Cup team, Srikanth, defeated the world No. 71 with a 21-19, 21-12 scoreline. Srikanth found himself on the back foot early in the first game, trailing 5-11 at the mid-game interval. However, the world No. 49 staged a spirited comeback, drawing level at 18-18 before taking three of the next four points to clinch the opening game. Wang began the second game brightly, racing to a 6-1 lead. But Srikanth responded with a seven-point surge to move ahead 8-6. Though Wang managed to regain a narrow 11-10 advantage at the interval and led 13-10 shortly after, Srikanth wrestled control back with a stunning run of nine consecutive points. He closed out the match with ease, sealing his place in the last eight. Srikanth, who reached the final of the Malaysia Masters earlier this year, is now expected to face top seed Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei in the quarterfinals.
