Johari Ghani: Umno needs new strategy for GE16 to win over youth
BATU PAHAT: Umno needs new strategies for the 16th General Election (GE16) that target the younger generation, who make up nearly 40 per cent of voters. Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani said the party could no longer rely on its track record in nation-building to convince young voters. He said the next election would be a real test to determine whether Umno could evolve with the times, especially in understanding the younger generation, or remain stuck in old ways. "Umno has a strong track record after governing the country for 60 years and building an education system for all Malaysians. "But I remind Umno members that while we had great success and have an outstanding record of achievement, the younger generation no longer looks at past accomplishments and a party's legacy. "They assess leaders' commitment to future issues, including environmental matters and the integrity of the leadership." Johari said this after officiating at the Parit Sulong Umno division meeting here today. Present were Parit Sulong Umno division chief Datuk Zulkurnain Kamisan and Wanita Umno chief Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad. Johari, who is plantation and commodities minister, said Umno must accept that the younger generation does not judge a party based on its past success, but rather on what it offers for the future. "The younger generation wants leaders who not only fight for their interests, but who also care about global issues. "They place great emphasis on the integrity and credibility of leaders. They want to see real commitment in championing the people's cause. That is what they will evaluate." He said there has been a significant shift in how the younger generation thinks. "Young people view things through a different lens and have a different mindset from the older generation." He said the party's wings, particularly Youth and Puteri, must serve as a bridge between the older and younger generations. "These wings play a crucial role in ensuring that Umno's future strategies position young people as part of the party's struggle. "The voices of the youth must be given space so they can become a valuable source of input for the party's leadership. "Youth input will create awareness and inspire leaders, including myself.

UPSI bus crash survivors to get OKU card, says Noraini
Fifteen people were killed when a chartered bus carrying UPSI students from Jerteh, Terengganu to the Tanjung Malim campus overturned and crashed into the barrier on the side of the road. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Students who suffered permanent disabilities in the fatal bus crash that occurred on the East-West Highway near Gerik earlier this month will be issued with an OKU (persons with disabilities) card. This was revealed by deputy women, family and community development minister Noraini Ahmad, who said her ministry is compiling details of the students affected, Bernama reported. She said the social welfare department (JKM) is assisting the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students who sustained permanent disabilities by processing their applications for the OKU card. She added that the ministry is also reaching out to those who suffered other long-term injuries in the June 9 incident. 'The exact number of affected students is still being gathered as we are awaiting medical assessments,' the Wanita Umno chief told reporters after a party meeting in Kepala Batas, Penang today. She said counselling sessions are ongoing for survivors and the families of those who died, including the family in the Perodua Alza involved in the crash, as many remain traumatised. 'Ongoing psychological support is crucial, especially for those grieving the loss of loved ones. I visited the Alza family yesterday and they are still visibly affected,' she said, according to Bernama. Fifteen people were killed when a chartered bus carrying UPSI students from Jerteh, Terengganu to the Tanjung Malim campus overturned and hit a car with four passengers, before crashing into the barrier on the side of the road. The accident involved a total of 48 victims, 13 of whom died at the scene and two others at the hospital. Separately, higher education minister Zambry Abdul Kadir said universities must closely monitor any initiatives taken independently by their students, including the chartering of tour buses to return to their hometowns during the holiday season. He said such oversight was crucial to prevent any untoward incidents involving students. 'I urge universities to maintain communication and monitor any self-initiated plans by students,' he told reporters after visiting the home of the late Nurly Sahirah Azman, one of the UPSI students who died in the bus crash, in Kampung Gong Pasir, Kerandang, in Jerteh today. Zambry said the ministry is reviewing various views and suggestions for improvement following the tragic incident, including proposals to schedule student travel during the day instead of at night. 'We take note of all the concerns raised, especially on social media, to prevent any untoward incidents,' he said.

Wanita Umno says Cabinet post belongs to Umno, must be transferred to a loyalist after Tengku Zafrul's PKR switch
KUALA LUMPUR, May 31 – Wanita Umno has reportedly called on Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz to resign as investment, trade and industry minister following his announcement to leave Umno for PKR. The women's wing's information chief, Datuk Rosni Zahari, said the Cabinet position was allocated to Umno under the Unity Government's quota and must be relinquished to someone loyal to the party. 'That post does not belong to an individual; it is a trust given to Umno. It must be returned and handed over to a leader who is loyal and principled,' she said in a statement last night. Rosni also warned that any unilateral acceptance of former Umno leaders by other Unity Government components without consultation could be viewed as a betrayal of the coalition's consensus. 'This would not only cause friction among the parties, but could also threaten the stability of the Unity Government itself,' she added. She stressed that party loyalty is fundamental, and holding on to a ministerial role granted to Umno while switching parties is unethical and dishonourable. 'Umno is not a platform to be exploited for personal gain. Loyalty to the party is fundamental to the struggle. 'Defecting to another party while holding a position given to Umno is unethical, disgraceful, and completely unacceptable,' she said. Yesterday, Tengku Zafrul said he has resigned from Umno and announced plans to apply for membership in political ally PKR. The investment, trade and industry minister is also vacating his seat on the Umno Supreme Council as well as his position as its Kota Raja division chief. Tengku Zafrul previously said that he had joined Umno back in 1997. He served as CIMB Group chief executive for six years before resigning from his post after being appointed senator and the country's finance minister in 2020. He had contested the Kuala Selangor parliamentary seat in the 15th general election but was defeated by Parti Amanah Negara's Datuk Seri Dzulkefly Ahmad.
