Councillor Mathebula and Thungela wrap elders in warmth for Mandela Day
In the City of Coal, the spirit of Mandela Month came alive as Ward 17 Councillor, Sizwe Mathebula, in partnership with Thungela Resources and its subs, delivered a powerful gesture of love and recognition to the elderly residents of Overline.
The event, held at Witbank Primary School on July 18, was more than just a handover; it was a celebration of dignity, unity, and the enduring legacy of the late Nelson Mandela.
With winter and continuous cold fronts in the city, 50 elderly citizens were blessed to receive blankets, food parcels, and gift packs, each item a symbol of care and unity.
Mathebula shared that the initiative was made a reality by a request to Thungela for a helping hand, who responded with generosity and speed.
'We rejuvenated the spirit of Nelson Mandela. We are reminding ourselves of what he was all about and it doesn't end here. We still want to show more,' Mathebula said.
Smiles lit up faces as elders received their new blankets, some whispering prayers of thanks. 'We feel loved, we are thankful to this'.
One recipient, Mimi Jacobs, said, 'We feel blessed by the legacy of Nelson Mandela. I now have groceries for the whole month. Thank you for this kind of treatment.'
According to Mathebula, Thungela's involvement defined the power of corporate-community collaboration. Their contribution wasn't just about donations, it was about restoring hope. With this initiative, the elderly people declared blessing upon the host and they are looking forward to more of days like this.
