There are different ways to qualify for the Warm Home Discount scheme based on where you live. Households in England and Wales are eligible if they fit into two "core" groups. Core group one applies to households where someone receives the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit. Core group two applies to households on the following benefits: Housing Benefit income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) income-based Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA) Income Support the "Savings Credit" part of Pension Credit Universal Credit How to cut energy costs and get help with FOUR key household bills You will need to have been claiming either the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit or the other qualifying benefits on August 24 this year to be eligible for the Warm Home Discount in 2025/26. Households in Scotland are also bunched into two groups based on their circumstances. Those on the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit, known as "core group", get the £150 discount automatically applied. Other Scottish households in the "broader group" on certain means-tested benefits qualify for the discount but have to apply via their energy firm. Energy firms should tell you what benefits qualify you for the discount and may set extra criteria for you to meet as well. For the 2024/25 year, households in England, Wales or Scotland in core group two or the broader group had to live in a property with a high energy cost score as well be on benefits to qualify for the Warm Home Discount. However, this criteria has been scrapped for this winter meaning 2.7million more households will get it. You can still qualify for the Warm Home Discount if you have a prepayment meter. Your supplier will tell you how you'll get a discount. This might be a voucher you can use to top up your meter. If you qualify for the Warm Home Discount, you should receive a letter telling you. These are usually sent between October and January. OTHER ENERGY BILL HELP If you don't qualify for the Warm Home Discount you might be able to get help with energy bills through the Household Support Fund. The current round of the fund is worth £742million and has been shared between councils in England. They then have to distribute their share and set their own eligibility criteria on who can get help. You might be able to get free money direct into your bank account or vouchers to cover the cost of energy. If you've fallen into energy debt, you might be able to get a grant to wipe it clear through your energy firm too. British Gas and Octopus Energy, the UK's two biggest energy suppliers, both have schemes, as well as others. Are you missing out on benefits? Motherwell, Wishaw and Carluke MP welcomes UK Government's expansion of Warm Home Discount
Over six million households in the UK will see their energy bills cut by £150 this winter after the UK Government removed restrictions that previously excluded many who needed support, and increased the level of spend available in Scotland for energy suppliers. Motherwell, Wishaw and Carluke MP Pamela Nash has welcomed the UK Labour Government's expansion of the Warm Home Discount, which will benefit almost a quarter of a million households in Scotland. Over six million households in the UK will see their energy bills cut by £150 this winter after the government removed restrictions that previously excluded many who needed support, and increased the level of spend available in Scotland for energy suppliers. The changes mean that all households where the means-tested benefit recipient – or their partner or legal appointee – is named on the energy bill will now be eligible to receive the £150 electricity bill rebate. Pamela said: 'This is another package of support to help ease the cost of living for working families through the UK Labour Government's Plan for Change. 'I am proud that the changes made will mean that 240,000 households across Scotland will receive the £150 Warm Home Discount for the first time. 'This has been made possible as the government has manged to stabilise the economy and repaired the public finances – and I'm delighted the fruition of this work is putting more money of the pockets of families in Motherwell, Wishaw and Carluke.' *Don't miss the latest headlines from around Lanarkshire. Warm Home Discount scheme welcomed by Monmouthshire MP
The support comes through an expanded Warm Home Discount scheme, will provide eligible households with £150 off their energy bills next winter. Catherine Fookes, MP for Monmouthshire, said: "From my recent survey and speaking to residents on the doorstep, I know the cost of living is one of the key concerns for families across Monmouthshire. "So I very much welcome this news, it's a positive step forward and will provide millions more families across the UK with cost of living support, energy security and put more money in people's pockets. "This is welcome progress, but I know energy and water bills are still too high and people are still struggling after the past 15 years. "I will keep pushing the government to do even more to support those across Monmouthshire and bring energy bills down by producing our own Welsh green energy." The UK Government has announced that an additional 2.7 million households across the UK will now qualify for the £150 discount, bringing the total to more than six million. This includes 900,000 families with children and 1.8 million households living in fuel poverty.

Full list of requirements to be eligible for Warm Homes Discount
6 million households are due to receive the £150 discount this winter This winter, millions more individuals will be eligible for the Warm Home Discount, a £150 reduction on their electricity bills. This is due to new eligibility criteria released this month, although the benefit is only set to start being distributed around October. Eligibility for the benefit falls into one of two categories. Previously, these were:. People receiving the Guarantee element of Pension Credit - Core Group 1. People with low income and high energy costs - Core Group 2. People in Scotland identified by their supplier as at risk of fuel poverty - Broader Group. However, the recent update has made it so that people in core group 2 no longer need to have high energy costs to qualify. Simply claiming one of the qualifying benefits will be enough to receive the discount this winter. The current full list of qualifying benefits includes: Housing Benefit. Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA). Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA). Income Support. The 'Savings Credit' part of Pension Credit. Universal Credit. If you receive Child Tax Credit or Working Tax Credit, you may also be eligible, provided your household income falls below a certain threshold. To qualify, the person receiving the qualifying benefit must be named on the energy bill. The money is not paid to you like cash in hand; instead, it is applied to your bill by your electricity supplier. If you're on a prepayment meter, you might find a voucher arriving via post or email instead. Those residing in Scotland are encouraged to get in touch with their energy supplier if they think they may qualify under the core or broader groups. Official statistics suggest that over 6 million households will benefit from the scheme this year, marking an increase of 2.7 million. Among these, 900,000 are families with children and 1.8 million are homes experiencing fuel poverty. Prime Minister Keir Starmer commented: "I know families are still struggling with the cost of living, and I know the fear that comes with not being able to afford your next bill. "Providing security and peace of mind for working people is deeply personal to me as Prime Minister and foundational for the Plan for Change. "I have no doubt that, like rolling out free school meals, breakfast clubs and childcare support, extending this £150 energy bills support to millions more families will make a real difference." While this is a major update for the seasonal benefit. A bigger announcement is expected later this year as the scheme in its current form expires in March 2026, although it has been extended in the past.
