'Proud' swimming club celebrates centenary
Head coach Andy Eales said generations had been coming to the club [BBC] Keeping anything going for 100 years is no mean feat, which is why staff and members at a Warwickshire swimming club are celebrating hitting the milestone. Nuneaton and Bedworth Swimming Club's journey began in 1925, with 14 junior and 12 senior members, but now it boasts more than 400. Advertisement The club will host its centenary meet on Saturday and Sunday at The Pingles, Nuneaton, which will offer swimmers a chance to qualify for the 2026 county championships. "I think it's going to keep going from strength to strength, we're a big part of the community," said head coach Andy Eales. "It's decades and decades of families," he said, "grandparents, parents, now their grandchildren all at the club, so it goes from generation to generation." The club started at a pool in Upper Abbey Street, which was demolished in 1962. It then moved to old St Mary's Road pool, and merged with Bedworth's club in the 1990s. "I hope that in another 100 years' time somebody else is stood here being interviewed being asked the same questions. "I'm really proud to be part of such a strong developing club." Layton, a member of the club, said it was a positive community [BBC] "It's not just a singular person, it's everyone who brings the club together, it's just a really positive community," said Layton, vice-captain of performance squad one. The centenary open meet will include events from 50m, 100m and 200m across all strokes, 400m freestyle and individual medleys. There will be a knockout event for the fastest girls and boys across the weekend, as well as a coaches' relay. Follow BBC Coventry & Warwickshire on BBC Sounds, Facebook, X and Instagram. England chief Key confident 'pure talent' Archer can pick up Test career
The 30-year-old express quick has been included in England's squad for the second Test against India at Edgbaston after an absence from red-ball internationals of more than four years. Archer, hampered by injuries during his career, has played just 13 Tests -- with 42 wickets at an average of 31 -- and none since February 2021. But one of the most talented cricketers of his generation has now been recalled to the Test squad on the back of just one County Championship match this season, away to Durham last week, where Archer took 1-32 in 18 overs. "He's a pretty pure talent, there's not a lot of moving parts to his action in terms of complications, and he's 30-years-old now," Key told reporters in London on Friday. "He knows exactly what he's doing and what he's about. So it's more of a question of him just getting back into red-ball cricket." Key, speaking at a media event staged by series sponsors Rothesay, added: "The whole Jofra plan has been a long time in the making... We had Neil Killeen up there (at Durham), one of our (England) bowling coaches. "Jofra was such a talent. He was straight on the money. Bowling on a slow pitch, with good pace. We can track every single ball, He ain't going to forget how to bowl, Jofra." And Key insisted England were not taking a risk with Archer's fitness as they decide whether to play him at Edgbaston or at Lord's for the third Test. "When he finally comes back either next week or the week after, touch wood, then that will be brilliant,' said Key. "He will be fit and available for both (Tests). Whether he could play both, we'll find that out afterwards, if he did play at Edgbaston. "He isn't going to forget how to bowl. He's an unbelievable talent. I think Jof is one of the best bowlers in the world." Archer, however, could struggle to get back into an England side that chalked up a stunning five-wicket victory over India in the first of a five-Test series at Headingley last week. But if he is overlooked in Birmingham, he could return to Sussex to play the last two days of their County Championship match against Warwickshire next week. "We've picked him in the squad and we'll see how the conditions are," said former England batsman Key. "We've got decisions to make because these next two Tests are very close together and you want to be able to sustain that pressure throughout these back-to-back Test matches. "The guys (who played at Headingley) got better the more they bowled. We'll cross that bridge when we come to it. (Anyone who is not selected) can go back and play the last two days of the championship." © 2025 AFP

Bizarre! Batter No. 11 Gets Bowled With Two Runs Left To Score In County Game
Glamorgan's 2nd XI clinched a thrilling one-run victory over Warwickshire in the County Second XI Championship, with Mohammed Rizvi's 5/88 sealing the win. In a bizarre flow of events, a No. 11 batter of Warwickshire's 2nd XI was bowled out with just two runs needed, as Glamorgan bagged a thrilling one-run victory in the County Second XI Championship on Monday, a video of which has now gone viral on social media. Chasing 514 in the fourth innings, Warwickshire's innings was led by Arjun Singh Nahal's unbeaten hundred from No. 6. England U19 star Hamza Shaikh, Vaansh Lalit Jani and Oliver George Dandy played their part as well with commendable half-centuries. The chasing side was then derailed by a brilliant spell from Glamorgan leg-spinner Mohammed Rizvi, pushing the game to a thriller. Warwickshire, with one wicket remaining, required only two runs to complete a massive chase as Rizvi bowled his 29th over of the innings. Off the last delivery, No. 11 batter, Dhaka-born Arafat Bhuiyan tried a hoick across the line but was beaten in flight, and was bowled. Rizvi finished with a brilliant 5/88, as Nahal's unbeaten 125 off 203 deliveries went in vain. For Glamorgan, their two hundred-scorers were wicketkeeper-batter Alex Horton and the Zimbabwe-born Eddie Byrom. After losing their first game in the Second XI Championship, the victory over Warwickshire helped Glamorgan open their account in Group 3, moving to third, behind unbeaten leaders Durham and Middlesex. Warwickshire have lost two successive games and sit sixth, in the bottom position in the group. First Published: June 27, 2025, 17:52 IST
