Mountain rescue team help injured walker on Scafell Pike in Lake District
A MOUNTAIN rescue team was called out to help a man who had injured his knee. The walker was unable to continue his journey on Scafell Pike, and Wasdale Mountain Rescue were brought in to assist him. The team was called out on Wednesday, June 18, to the incident. In a post on social media, Wasdale Mountain Rescue said: "The team was called on Wednesday afternoon by Cumbria Police. "A walker had fallen and painfully injured his knee, making it impossible to continue further. He has also lost consciousness briefly but has since recovered. "A full callout was made, and the team made their way to the location. Helimed 58 also responded but was unable to land close enough, so it was forced to abort. "A medical assessment was made before transferring the walker carefully into the team stretcher. "The long but routine carry was then completed without incident down to Brackenclose, where the walker was transferred into their own vehicle for onward transfer to the hospital. "We wish the walker a very quick recovery and hope to see him back on the fells soon."

West Cumbrian coastguard teams assist injured walker
COASTGUARD teams were called out to assist an injured person on the West Cumbrian coast. Whitehaven and Maryport Coastguard teams came to the assistance of an injured walker. The incident took place on Sunday, May 25, at Fleswick Bay near St Bees. In a post on social media, Whitehaven Coastguard wrote: "We were tasked this afternoon by our Coordination Centre Belfast Coastguard, after a 999 call was received reporting a fallen walker with a leg injury, in the area of Fleswick Bay. "The original 999 call had accidentally been directed to Cumbria Police rather than asking for the coastguard. "The Wasdale Mountain Rescue team was also tasked by the police to assist. "Given the coastal location, the MRT team leader contacted HM Coastguard to define what rendezvous point was to be used. "A quick chat between both organisations identified that there was sufficient Coastguard Rescue Team personnel to resolve the incident. "The Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Team and Maryport Coastguard Rescue Team had been tasked and within 20 minutes of receiving the 999 call were on scene at Fleswick Bay with the casualty. "One of our casualty carers and a team paramedic set about conducting initial medical assessments and treatment. The casualty was then extracted and was on their way to the hospital. "When accessing this location, we always need to access as quickly and as safely as possible, whilst being sure not to upset the grazing livestock. "As always, our thanks go to the local farmers who work with us to ensure we have a predetermined safe route of access that doesn't impact their livelihood and ensures we have swift access to any casualty."

Seriously hurt climber saved in 11-hour rescue
A seriously injured climber was airlifted to hospital after an "heroic" 11-hour rescue, a mountain rescue team has said. Volunteers were called out to help on Scafell Pike in the Lake District just before 15:00 GMT on Monday. The man was suspended on a rope below his companion after a large fall and was unable to communicate, Wasdale Mountain Rescue (MRT) said. Help was requested from the Coastguard helicopter, and the air ambulance also assisted in what the MRT called a "hugely challenging technical rescue". The second climber was not hurt and was still secure on the crag, but urgently needed assistance, the MRT said. "We don't normally use superlatives but, with some truly amazing and heroic flying skills and teamwork, they managed to both access and then safely winch the climber directly into the helicopter from his suspended position on the end of the rope," it said. "A transfer to Helimed 58 was then completed to allow advanced medical care to be given, before then flying to a suitable hospital." The MRT said the rescue of the second climber took place on "one of the most inaccessible points" in the area and in very cold and windy conditions. "After de-rigging, the long walk down to Brackenclose was completed safely and the climber re-united with awaiting family members," it said. The rescue was completed just before 02:00 GMT on Tuesday.
