US President Donald Trump favors going back to Washington Commanders' old NFL team name, says new name 'doesn't have the same ring'
President Donald Trump (via Getty Images) United States President Donald Trump has once more given his take on the long-running saga surrounding the Washington Commanders' team name—this time, with even more confidence. Speaking to the media on Sunday, Trump merely stated that he would have never renamed the NFL team in the first place, terming the current name substandard compared to the original name. US President Donald Trump calls for name reversal as Washington Commanders weigh potential stadium deal talks The Washington Commanders dropped their previous name in 2020 following increasing popular outrage at its offensiveness and repeated calls from Native American activists and civil rights organizations. Even after the change of ownership and branding that has followed since then, under the current command of Josh Harris, talks about a potential rebrand continue to be prevalent in the media and among supporters. 'You want me to make a controversial statement?' Donald Trump said, as reported by The Hill's Sarah Fortinsky. 'I would. I wouldn't have changed the name. It just doesn't have the same; it doesn't have the same ring to me.' 'You Want Me To Make A Controversial Statement?': Trump Lets Loose On Washington Commanders' Name Donald Trump's remarks come in the wake of new rumors surrounding the franchise's future, both in brand and in terms of infrastructure, as plans for a potential new stadium in the historic RFK Stadium site in Washington, D.C., are still being debated. While Donald Trump admitted that repeated winning could blunt public criticism of the Commanders' moniker, he indicated he still prefers the old name. 'But, you know, winning can make everything sound good,' Trump added. 'So if they win, all of a sudden the Commanders sounds good, but I wouldn't have changed the name.' Trump's new position comes at a pivotal moment. The Commanders are said to be considering a move back to the RFK Stadium site as a potential future home, but that would need to be greenlit by city leaders and potentially federal pressure. That leaves the door open to possible political horse-trading—something Trump is now famous for. In exchange for his leverage, Trump might demand naming rights on the new stadium or even bringing back the old team name, even though Harris has publicly said that kind of return isn't an option. Also read: Will Donald Trump become the unlikely savior of the Washington Commanders' stadium comeback? Whether or not Josh Harris would be open to going in reverse is still to be determined. The company may ultimately have to decide how much it is willing to negotiate in order to acquire long-term facilities and political goodwill in the nation's capital. Game On Season 1 continues with Mirabai Chanu's inspiring story. Watch Episode 2 here.

Commanders Given Surprisingly Low RB Grade
Commanders Given Surprisingly Low RB Grade originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Is it fair to say that the Washington Commanders' running back room has been disrespected this offseason? The latest rankings from Pro Football Focus writer Dalton Wasserman don't do them any favors. Advertisement As part of a series ranking each position group across the league, Wasserman ranked Washington's running back unit as the 14th-best room in the league. "The Commanders don't have a singular star in their running back room, but they do have a considerable amount of depth," Wasserman said. "Brian Robinson Jr. has proven reliable and led the unit with 928 rushing yards last season, including the playoffs. Austin Ekeler rebounded from a tough 2023 to earn a 69.8 PFF overall grade." To say this grade is disrespectful to the Commanders would be an understatement. Ekeler and Robinson were an excellent duo last season. While neither rushed for over 1,000 yards, they pose a real challenge for opposing defenses. Last season, the two combined for over 1,600 yards from scrimmage. They aren't that far back from the Buffalo Bills' duo of James Cook and Ray Davis. Advertisement Was that enough to bump the Commanders all the way down to 14th? Not really. Ekeler and Robinson are two totally different running backs. Robinson is more of a power runner who can be an important red-zone threat. Ekeler, meanwhile, is one of the better receiving backs in the league. Together, they make a very strong tandem. It's far greater than just the 14th-best running back room in the league right now, at least. 'Confidence Meter' Full For Commanders' Jayden Daniels In 2025
'Confidence Meter' Full For Commanders' Jayden Daniels In 2025 originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Washington Commanders' quarterback Jayden Daniels is coming off one of the best rookie seasons ever, and that means expectations are high entering Year 2. Advertisement After a 12-win season and NFC Championship appearance, the next step is logical - a Super Bowl. For a quarterback in his second season, that is quite the bar to reach, but the franchise has made moves to help propel him to that bar. Deeob Samuel and Laremy Tunsil come in, and now, with the expected improvement that quarterbacks take from Year 1 to Year 2, Jayden, for some, is close to entering elite status. While we think that is a little premature, Bleacher Report's Damien Parson, in assessing the confidence meter of second-year quarterbacks on a scale of one (no confidence) to 10 (supremely confident), Jayden's is reading a 10. "The reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year had one of the best seasons by a first-year quarterback in NFL history," Parson writes. "Barring anything catastrophic, Daniels is expected to play at a high level again in 2025. One caveat: Nothing is for certain. Advertisement "C.J. Stroud experienced a sophomore slump last season, but his offense took a step back as a whole. Daniels and the Commanders need to avoid the same thing from happening in the nation's capital." Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden DanielsEric Hartline-Imagn Images We don't disagree. We know what happened to Stroud last season, but there is enough around Daniels to cushion the fall if it were to happen. Granted, replicating his efforts last year will be seriously tough, but playoffs and a deep run are now the minimum expectation for a franchise that was in the NFL wilderness just two seasons ago. How times change. And the reason for that is the confidence meter for Daniels propelling this team towards glory is high. Advertisement As it should be.
