3 pacers, 3 spinners: Will India be tempted for some big bowling changes at the Oval?

The stage is now set for a thrilling finish to the England vs India series that has delivered everything. There has been some sensational batting, fierce bowling, and dramatic moments—whether it be the absolute cinema at Lord's on Day 3 or Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar leaving Ben Stokes hanging as they refused to shake his hand in let's keep all that aside. India need to win the Oval Test to avoid a series defeat and head home with the scoreline at 2-2. The batting has been sensational, with Shubman Gill leading the way with 722 runs, while KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, and Rishabh Pant have also contributed big. However, when it comes to the bowling, there has been a cause for concern. As we saw at Headingley and, to an extent, in Manchester, it felt like there were moments when the Indian bowling lacked spark and that elusive was especially astonishing to see Jasprit Bumrah be a bit lacklustre in the 4th Test, conceding more than 100 runs in the only innings he bowled. Questions about his workload management have been the talk of the town ever since India arrived on English shores. He was scheduled to play three Tests, but now things are a little out of his hands, to say the least. India need the win, and they need their ace in the lineup for the next match. After the Manchester Test draw, Gautam Gambhir said that all the pacers are fit and a decision on Bumrah will be made in due course—something Sitanshu Kotak also reiterated during the presser on July 29."We haven't had any conversation around the combination for the last Test," said Gambhir. "No decision has been made on whether Jasprit Bumrah will play or not. Ultimately, whoever plays, they will try and do the job for the country."Adding to this is the Kuldeep Yadav headache. The Indian spinner has barely got a look-in throughout the series, and pundits have been vocal about having him in the mix. Now, we all know that Dhruv Jurel is going to be one of the changes happening as Rishabh Pant is out. But what about the bowling? What approach will India take? Will they make a big change or stick to the original plan?3 pacers and 3 spinners to deliver the win?Let's take the first case—three spinners and the same number of pacers. This means that Kuldeep finally gets his chance to play. But for that to happen, India may have to sacrifice one of the likely means either Shardul Thakur or Washington Sundar will have to make way. We all know that Sundar has sealed his spot with the way he bowled and batted in Manchester, and no one would dare think about removing Ravindra Jadeja. This means the axe may fall on Shardul. The Mumbai all-rounder bowled just 27 overs across three innings and has two wickets. It seems that captain Shubman Gill isn't a fan of his bowling and would rather stick to his frontline there is a case to be made about India's fragile lower order and how Shardul scored a brave 41 in the first innings in Manchester, Sundar's brilliance and the arrival of Jurel will provide some much-needed strength to the batting order. This opens the door for Kuldeep to come in and form an all-out spin attack with Jadeja and Sundar that can truly trouble England. This is something R Ashwin advocated for right after the Manchester Test."If you are only planning to give Shardul Thakur this many overs, and expect 20-30 runs from him. I love Shardul Thakur, I like him a lot, but if this is the usage point, why can't you consider Kuldeep Yadav? It is just blowing my head away. I know it seems against the grain because there are three spinners, but it is not that way, Jadeja is a specialist batter for you now. Washington Sundar is also batting well. When your bowlers can bat so well, why are you not bringing an attacking bowler?' said coming to the pace attack—expect Akash Deep to be back to replace Anshul Kamboj, who had a poor debut outing. The big question remains about Bumrah. If he does play, then the bowling attack will be a menacing one, with the Indian ace and Kuldeep being the he doesn't, it could be a toss-up between Prasidh Krishna—who has been out of contention since the third Test—and Arshdeep Singh, who is ready to make his debut. In a scenario where India wants that extra batting cushion and Bumrah isn't playing, then Shardul can be used as the third pacer, but his number of overs will need to seriously 3+3 bowling lineup: Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah/Arshdeep Singh, Akash Deep, and Mohammed to the main planWhat has worked—and sometimes struggled—for India this series has been the three pacers and two spinners mantra, with a pace-bowling all-rounder in the mix. This will mean that Kuldeep will once again head home without playing a single Test in England, and Shardul will retain his pacer selection would remain the same, with Bumrah or Arshdeep leading the way alongside Akash Deep and Siraj. While this has yielded mixed results, the idea for the management might be to not go for too many changes in a crucial issue, as mentioned before, is that India has lacked spark at times, and the visitors desperately need it now. India are known to keep everyone guessing when it comes to their lineup, and it may not be a big surprise if they select the 3+3 win the game, you need your best team. And at the moment, Kuldeep being there seems to be the right choice.- EndsTune InMust Watch

Century at Old Trafford, Style on Instagram: Washington Sundar Is India's Quiet Game Changer—On and Off the Field

Last Updated: Washington Sundar's epic Old Trafford century signals his cricketing resurgence, while his minimalist, authentic fashion choices are making him a Gen Z icon. When India found themselves gasping at 0/2 on day five of the fourth Test at Manchester's storied Old Trafford, not many could have foreseen a result that would shift the series narrative. And despite KL Rahul and Shubman Gill's epic stand of 188 runs, India were still not out of the woods. Enter Washington Sundar, promoted up the order with Rishabh Pant sidelined, striding in with an air of composure that belied the occasion. Sundar's unbeaten 101—his maiden international century—became the axis around which India's great escape swung, ably partnered by Ravindra Jadeja in a defiant, undefeated 203-run stand. While the hosts circled, desperate for a 3-1 lead, Sundar and Jadeja batted through the storm, transforming adversity into an exhibition of grit and clarity. As coach and commentators alike acknowledged, this innings will be remembered not just for the numbers, but for the sheer maturity Sundar exuded under pressure. For a player often viewed as a bits-and-pieces all-rounder, this was a coming-of-age performance: technical, prepared, and impervious to noise. Sundar's own words, 'A Test hundred is something truly unique. Every century matters, but this one holds special significance," underscored both a personal milestone and a broader message of resilience. But if his cricket captured the imagination of millions, it's Sundar's understated off-field swagger that's refreshing the playbook of Indian athletic icons. Among a generation of cricketers increasingly alive to the demands of image culture, Sundar stands out—not by chasing trends, but by redefining them. His Instagram feed offers a compelling visual story: swerves into streetwear, vacation fits in Harare sun, nods to Chennai roots with veshti drapes, and collaborations with youthful brands like Puma and Anker that favor substance and versatility over loudness. His style mantra? 'Have fun with comfort." Sundar plays with colors, but shrugs at flamboyant prints. He prefers joggers, hoodies, and carrot-fit pants over attention-grabbing statements—a wardrobe that quietly balances cosmopolitan ease and rootedness. The occasional cap or sneaker drop hints at a collector's sensibility. Washington Sundar's coach M Senthilnathan on 101* vs England - 'Very emotional, it will be remembered for long time'

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - JULY 27: India batsman Washington Sundar celebrates his century during day five of the 4th Test Match between England and India at Emirates Old Trafford on July 27, 2025 in Manchester, England. (Photo by) Ahmedabad: All-rounder Washington Sundar scored his maiden century in international cricket during Team India's fourth Test against England, helping the visitors remain alive in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Washington Sundar (101* off 206 balls) stitched an unbeaten 203-run partnership with Ravindra Jadeja (107* off 185 balls. The hosts were in the driver's seat after reducing India to 0/2 in the first over of their second innings, and were all set to take a 3-1 lead in the series. However, an 188-run partnership between KL Rahul (90) and Shubman Gill (103), followed by Washington and Jadeja's heroics helped the Indian team pull off nothing short of a miracle. "I feel highly emotional because this is Washington's maiden international hundred and came at a time when it really mattered. This knock will be remembered for a long time because he held his own against the English bowlers, denying them a triumph in a dominant position. Washington came up the order following Rishabh Pant's injury and showed initiative, helping India save the Test, which is equal to a win considering the tough circumstances. A maiden international century after showcasing such character and desire to fight is certainly sweeter than achieving the same in easier circumstances, and the team management will certainly hold him in higher regard," said Washington Sundar's childhood coach M. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Senthilnathan in an exclusive interaction with Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. "Washington Sundar missed out on a ton earlier in 2021 when he remained unbeaten on 96 in the fourth Test against England which was played in Ahmedabad. It took some time for him to get back and score a ton but I am happy that he has managed to reach the milestone. Washington Sundar is showing the world that he can be a very useful cricketer across departments, as evident from his run tally in the ongoing series," he added. IND vs ENG: Gautam Gambhir loses cool during heated exchange with ground staff at The Oval ahead of 5th Test The Tamil Nadu all-rounder had to return back early during the Indian team's earlier tours of England, suffering unfortunate and unexpected injuries. These setbacks demotivated the all-rounder, testing his character. "He was really down mentally due to unfortunate injuries in his ankle and finger one or two days before a match. Washington asked me, 'What should I do?'. I said, 'Nothing. Just work hard'. Those were the only instances where he would feel low. Even during the current tour, the only advice I gave Washington was to stay fit due to the unfortunate injuries previously while playing football or bowling," said the cricketer's coach. Poll What do you think about Washington Sundar's maiden century under pressure? A remarkable achievement Expected from a player of his caliber Just a lucky innings More of a team effort Two of the biggest factors behind Washington Sundar's success have been his patience and work ethic, especially considering the limited opportunities earlier due to the presence of Ravichandran Ashwin. "I told him to hang in there. Washington Sundar has never been lazy which is a big quality of his. He will be on the ground even after an early morning flight which showcases his commitment. Washington Sundar had to wait for a long time, nearly three to four years but he had the patience to keep performing and stay right behind Ashwin. You can never see his aggression outside, he is very subtle but inside he is a very strong person with very high self-confidence levels," stated Senthilnathan. "No Personal Milestone Comes Ahead Of Team": Ex England Star Adds Fuel To Handshake Snub Fire

Former England cricketer Jonathan Trott, while sharing his perspective on the handshake controversy in the Manchester Test, highlighted both viewpoints and said that "England are probably a little frustrated" and the whole drama set things up nicely for the fifth and final Test to be spicy. During the last drinks break of the final day of the fourth Test, England captain Ben Stokes proposed ending the match in a draw with a handshake. However, with Ravindra Jadeja batting on 89 and Washington Sundar on 80, approaching their well-deserved centuries, the Indian duo opted to continue batting until both players reached their individual milestones, leading to visible frustration from Stokes. "I am not sure if it was necessary, but the common practice - certainly here in England - is that if you're offered the opportunity to finish the game early, it's usually more about the game situation than personal milestones. From Ben Stokes' perspective, no personal milestone comes ahead of the team's goal. "In this case, India's goal was to secure a draw, and they achieved that. So for England, the expectation was that India would shake hands and walk off with 80 not out - that would normally suffice. But I can also understand the other side," Trott said on JioHotstar. Sundar, who was batting at No. 5 for the first time, entered 90s with a pull off Joe Root for four, before Jadeja got his century and then smashed Brook over extra cover for four to bring up a 200-run partnership with Jadeja before a flick got him the two runs needed to raise his first Test century. "For someone like Washington Sundar, who has batted so well, giving up the chance to score a debut hundred is not easy. You never know when another opportunity will come. So, I understand both viewpoints. "England are probably a little frustrated, but that's natural. What this does, though, is set things up nicely for the next Test. It's going to be spicy, and I'm looking forward to it," Trott added. Speaking on England's struggles with the ball, Trott noted that the hosts bowled 142 overs and managed just two wickets each on the final two days, which is a concern for England, especially with the Ashes coming up. "England tried everything, didn't they? They can't say they didn't give their best. But for me, the concern lies in the quality - and as an England fan and former player, with the Ashes coming up and this series on the line, it's worrying. "England bowled 142 overs and managed just two wickets on a Day 4 and 5 pitch where the ball was keeping low. Both wickets came in the first over. That's slightly concerning because they had two bites at the new ball when India were under pressure, yet couldn't capitalise," he said. Trott concluded by highlighting Sundar's impact as a genuine all-rounder. "Looking at India, though, we've discovered another strong left-handed batter and a quality all-rounder in Washington Sundar - just 25-26 (years old). He can excel in both disciplines and looks like the heir apparent to Ravindra Jadeja whenever he decides to hang up his boots. "Sundar has batted magnificently, and he seems capable of playing for a long time. This makes India's selection tricky going forward, but it certainly makes the team a lot stronger," said Trott.

England vs India: Cricket laws broken in Old Trafford Test controversy

To many cricket lovers, the spirit of cricket is a hazy, romantic, hard-to-define concept but to the game's law makers it is much more tangible that that. There are 42 laws in every cricket match and the law book also contains a special preamble on the spirit of cricket which includes more laws to which players are held fully accountable. It is placed in the front of the book because it is considered the most important entry. And England, self-appointed standard setters for the game's moral compass, pushed those laws beyond breaking point on a day when they taunted and mocked Indian batsmen Ravi Jadeja. and Washington Sundar after they refused an invitation from English captain Ben Stokes to declare the game drawn before they had their centuries. Here are three examples. THE LAW: It is against the spirit of the game to direct abusive language towards an opponent or umpire. THE INCIDENT: 'F------ hell Washy get on with it,'' said Harry Brook to Sundar when he was 95 chasing his century. OUR VERDICT: Normally players caught swearing over the stump mike get fined. Brook appears to have escaped. That's surprising. Not the worst sledge we've heard but the angry tone in which it was delivered went down badly with the Indian team, especially as Sundar had every right to go on and get his century. Guilty. THE LAW: The captains are responsible for ensuring play is conducted within the spirit of the game. THE INCIDENT: Stokes was the key architect in making a mockery of the final hour of the Test. He had every right to ask the Indian batsmen if they wanted to finish up but they had every right to reject him. From that point he turned into Captain Salty and his decision to gift them centuries via some 'joke'' bowling from Harry Brook was a demeaning act as far away from the spirit of the game as you could imagine. OUR VERDICT: Stokes effectively tossed this law out the window had one of his worst days as captain by setting a dreadful example. Guilty. THE LAW: It is against the spirit of the game to seek to distract an opponent either verbally or by harassment with persistent clapping or unnecessary noise under the guise of enthusiasm and motivation of one's own side. THE INCIDENT: Where do we start? The English were as rowdy as a flock of gallahs all day with the stump mike running hot with random observations and needling taunts. On and on it went then, when Sundar and Jadeja approached their tons, the volume level soared again. OUR VERDICT: Guilty but India can't whinge too loudly because they babbled on all day when they were in the field as well.
