Washington Township, New Jersey, police search for armed robbery suspects who ambushed couple outside home

Police in Washington Township, New Jersey, are investigating after an armed robbery outside a home Sunday night. A man and woman were getting out of their car at a home on Eton Drive in the Crofton Run neighborhood in Gloucester County when two armed suspects ambushed them around 11:30 p.m., Washington Township Police said in a post on Facebook. One suspect allegedly hit the man in the head with a handgun and demanded his Rolex and wallet while the other suspect allegedly held the woman at gunpoint and told her to remain silent, police said. Police used a K9 and a drone in an effort to track the suspects but were unable to find them. The suspects got away with the man's watch as well as a wallet, multiple credit cards and cash. The man who was robbed had head and elbow injuries but declined medical treatment, according to police. Police have gotten surveillance video from neighbors that captured the robbery and shows the suspects fleeing on foot, the post says. The suspects got into another car at Eton and Joseph drives and then fled toward Fries Mill Road, police said. License plate reader data indicates the suspects were following the couple while they were driving home from the Ritz-Carlton in Philadelphia, police said. Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to contact Detective Lou DiAmbrosio or Detective Matt Barnett at (856) 589-0330. The police department said it has added extra patrols to the area. Earlier this month, Washington Township police said in one night thieves stole four unlocked cars from the township that had the key fobs inside. Since then, police in the area have been posting on social media, encouraging residents to establish a "9 p.m. routine" in which they remove valuables and keys and lock their cars every night.

New Jersey couple fueled by tragedy is on mission to save lives, make roads safer

It was a 38-mile-long journey across South Jersey for dozens of bikers on Sunday. A ride full of heavy hearts as they honored the life of Toni Donato-Bolis and her unborn child. "Looking at my daughter, lifeless, was the most incredible thing that I think that we've ever encountered in the 45 years that we've been together," Bolis' father, Charles Donato, said, standing next to his wife, Mary. Donato said his daughter was expected to give birth two days after she was killed by a distracted driver in Washington Township on June 1, 2011. In the years since, her family members have become advocates for safer driving. "Back when my sister was killed, there were no laws against distracted driving or texting and driving," said Angela Melroy, sister of Toni Donato-Bolis. "We fought up at the state level, and we were able to get a law passed called the Kulesh, Kubert and Bolis' Law back in 2012, which gives penalties for people that are caught texting and driving." Their mission to save lives and do good in the community continued with a raffle and luncheon on Sunday in Gloucester County. The family created The Toni Donato-Bolis and Baby RJ Foundation. They said they've raised more than $100,000 over the years for scholarships for high school seniors. Melroy said it's what her sister would have wanted. "My sister Toni was full of life. She was the biggest giver. So, this is something right up her alley," Melroy said. "If she was here, this is what she would be doing for someone else that we lost, or if anyone else lost someone." Donato said his family will continue dedicating their lives to making a difference. "That's the whole purpose of everything we do — is to keep her name and her unborn child's name alive," he said.

Dr. William Mennies Elementary School teacher faces child-porn charges

An elementary school teacher has been charged with possessing and distributing child pornography, according to the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office. James Adams, 50, of Washington Township was arrested during a raid at his home the morning of June 26, the prosecutor's office said. Adams is a teacher at Dr. William Mennies Elementary School in Vineland. The school has approximately 565 students in kindergarten through fifth grade, according to the New Jersey Department of Education. The Vineland school district noted Adams' arrest in a post at its Facebook page. "The safety and well‑being of our students and staff remain our highest priority," it said. "We are fully cooperating with authorities and will adhere to all legal and policy requirements throughout this process." A school district representative could not be reached for comment on Adams' employment status. An investigation is ongoing. The prosecutor's office asked anyone with information to call its high-tech crimes unit at 856-384-5524. The arrest June 26 came after social media messages that contained alleged images of child sexual abuse were traced to the teacher's home. Franklinville man charged: Driver was stopped on suspicion of following girls "Adams also gave a statement to detectives admitting to receiving (child sexual abuse material) over social media," the prosecutor's office said. He is being held in Salem County Jail, pending a court appearance. Adams has been enrolled in a state pension program for teachers since 2004, online records show. They put his annual salary at approximately $73,000 at year-end 2021. He is charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child through possession and distribution of child sexual abuse or exploitation materials, the prosecutor's office said. The charges are only allegations. Adams has not been convicted in the case. Jim Walsh is a senior reporter for the Courier-Post, Burlington County Times and The Daily Journal.
