Dana Carvey talks 'delicate' process of playing mentally 'compromised' Biden on 'SNL'

Dana Carvey is looking back on the "delicate" process of spoofing former President Joe Biden. The comedian, 70, chatted with Julie Bowen in an episode his "Fly on the Wall" podcast released June 26 about impersonating Biden during the 50th season of "Saturday Night Live." The "Modern Family" star asked Carvey if he has any regrets about the impression "now that you know that Biden is severely diminished," referring to reports about the 46th president's alleged cognitive decline. "I knew that he was compromised mentally," Carvey said. "I mean, it was obvious. But it was a delicate thing in the comedy world. A lot of people did not want to do anything that would ding him in an awkward way." Bowen objected to that notion, shooting back, "But it's comedy!" The "Wayne's World" star agreed and defended the impression by explaining his approach. "If I can make Biden funny to everybody, then I am where I want to be, and to make it funny, it had to be recognizable," he said. Still, Carvey noted there are "certain things I did not include" in the impersonation. He went on to add that it was a "real challenge" to make the Biden impression "acceptable." Carvey's podcast cohost David Spade also argued that it was "easier to make fun of" Biden while he was in office, as opposed to if he were a private citizen. "Once he's president, then he's more fair game," Spade said. Carvey debuted as Biden on "SNL" opposite Maya Rudolph as Kamala Harris in September, two months after Biden exited the 2024 presidential race due to concerns about his mental fitness. He continued to play Biden on "SNL" during the lead-up to the election. Dana Carvey talks 'top secret' Biden role on 'SNL': 'I've kept it under wraps for weeks' Carvey, who previously starred on "SNL" from 1986 to 1993, told Bowen he "fell in love" with his Biden impression, which took two years to perfect. The initial versions depicted him as "sweet," but the impression lacked "pop or energy," he explained. Then, Carvey added, "I heard him whisper and yell, and I thought, 'Oh, here we go.'" Dana Carvey's Church Lady returns to 'SNL' with David Spade as Hunter Biden Carvey also revealed that Biden's staff told him they loved the impression and even invited him to the White House for lunch, but the meeting never happened. Carvey previously broke down his role as Biden on his "Superfly" podcast in September, saying he felt there was a lack of Biden impressions out there in comparison to impressions of Trump. "Biden is trickier," he said.

Mike Myers went into depression when SNL sketches were cut

Mike Myers used to "go into a depression" if his sketches were cut from Saturday Night Live. The 62-year-old star was a writer on the comedy series from 1989 to 1995 and has made occasional appearances over the years since, and he hated the dress rehearsal before the live show because it left him feeling "nervous" and deeply unhappy if his skits didn't make it through to the final programme. He told Variety: "Dress rehearsal bums me out and I get nervous. Then if the sketch gets in, I'm like, 'OK!' I'm way more psyched that it got in, that I'm going to be in the show this week.' 'I used to go into a depression when my sketch got cut." However, the Austin Powers star learned a new perspective from Conan O'Brien, who was one of Saturday Night Live's writers from 1988 to 1991. He said: "Then one week, Conan had worked with a very, very hard host who had put him through the wringer. "Conan was just a mess and saw that a sketch was cut and he goes, 'Perfect. It's all going perfectly to plan.' It got a big laugh, and I was like, 'You can be that way? You don't have to be depressed?' "He taught me how to say, 'OK. It's not the end of the world.'' And Mike insisted he wouldn't have tried to fight for an axed sketch to be included. He said: 'Never. I have witnessed people try it. That's when I go invisible. Too much tension! The captain has spoken, move on.' But he has fought for certain jokes, though these days he'd go with the judgement of showrunner Lorne Michaels. He said: 'When I was younger as a writer, if Lorne Michaels asked, 'Do you think you can make that work?' I'd say, 'Yes, I think I can.' Whereas now I think I'd be more likely to say, 'If you're not sure, let's not!'' Mike returned to SNL for the 50th anniversary special earlier this year, and less than two weeks later, he made his first appearance on a regular episode in 10 years when he played Elon Musk in the cold opener. And the Wayne's World star is having "so much fun" playing the billionaire businessman. He said: 'It's so much fun. Colin [Jost] and the crew write the Elons, and all I do is I add a little this and a little that, and mostly, I cut. A lot of people don't like to cut. I love to cut. "If you've got eight jokes, three of them are OK and the five of them are strong, let's just go with the five! 'I've had so much fun doing it. When I did the 50th anniversary, I had a moment going, 'Do I know how to do this?' And I was like, 'Oh, of course, I know how to do this. I did this for six years.' "

Mixtape sent a sherpa up a mountain to get the rights to use a song, and Grand Theft Auto has "nothing on our toilet paper tech"

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Mixtape is a coming of age story that's a literal mixtape of music, gameplay and art styles. It focuses on three friends spending their last night together, with a perfect mixtape of music to accompany their final adventure as friends. It's also, according to creative lead Johnny Galvatron, got GTA beating toilet paper tech and getting the rights to use one song involved sending someone up a mountain. Wishlist Mixtape on Steam now Mixtape is odd to explain initially but instantly makes sense when you see it in action. "The music is a mixtape and so is the gameplay," says Galvatron. "There's everything from skateboarding to pulling slushies; there's an amazing level where your toilet paper a house. I just have to say, our toilet paper tech is second to none. The way you can toilet paper that house? I'm extremely proud of that. Grand Theft Auto? Nothing on our toilet paper tech." Even without the soundtrack it's an interesting clash of genres with a distinctive art style. But it is all about the music. "On their last night together [three friends] listen to this perfectly curated mixtape, containing music from DEVO, Roxy Music, Lush, The Smashing Pumpkins, Iggy Pop, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division, The Cure and many more," he explains. "Through the gameplay, through the music, you relive their finest hours." Getting a soundtrack with such a high pedigree wasn't easy either. "One of the things I enjoyed the most was collating the soundtrack and then getting the wheels in motion for how to get that music," admits Galvatron. "I'm not saying it was The Cure, but we were trying to get a song and one of the people that owned the copyright was up a mountain and we had to send a sherpa to go and find this guy so we could get the rights." (Founding member of The Cure, Lol Tolhurst, we're looking at you.) Mixtape is looking like a cinematic, arty take on the familiar whimsy of growing up, with Galvatron name-checking films like Dazed and Confused, Ferris Bueller's Day Off and even Wayne's World. It's coming '2025' to PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X. If you're looking for more excellent games from today's Future Games Show, have a look at our official Steam page.

Child of ‘90s bombshell Tia Carrere comes out as transgender: ‘He's his own person'

Tia Carrere is showing unwavering support as her son lives his truth. Carrere, who shot to fame in 1992 for playing Cassandra Wong in the classic comedy 'Wayne's World,' recently revealed that she's proud of her 19-year-old son's major life change. 'He's very matter-of-fact,' the 58-year-old star told People. 'He knows who he is, and he's very happy.' Advertisement 5 Tia Carrere's child has come out as a transgender man. Getty Images The Hawaii native claimed she 'did a good job' raising Jude — who was born Bianca Wakelin — and is pleased with the person he grew up to be. 'He's such a sweetheart, he's like the therapist to all the other kids,' she added of her son, whom she shares with ex-husband Simon Wakelin. 'When his friends go out drinking or partying too hard, he's always the designated driver, that kind of caring friend you can always lean on.' The teen, who is Carrere's only child, seemingly has no plans to follow his mother's path in Hollywood. 'He's more introverted, so he definitely won't go into acting or singing like I did,' Carrere added. 5 Jude walked the red carpet at the world premiere of Disney's 'Lilo & Stitch' remake on May 17. 'He's a great artist,' his mother shared. 'I don't know what he'll do! Maybe become a doctor or work with animals. He's working with animals right now.' Carrere insisted Jude 'doesn't love the spotlight' — though he did walk the red carpet in an all-black suit with a pink and white floral lei around his neck for the world premiere of 'Lilo & Stitch' at El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles earlier this month. FilmMagic Carrere, who played Mrs. Kekoa in the live-action remake of the animated movie, had to skip the big night because she was scheduled to film in the Philippines. She also voiced Nani in the original 2002 'Lilo & Stitch' and the television series that ran from 2003 to 2006. Carrere has acted in dozens of productions since she was discovered at 17 years old at a grocery store in Hawaii, according to People. She had been approached by parents of a film producer for the 1988 movie 'Aloha Summer,' who had told her, 'Darling, you're gorgeous! You should be the female lead in our son's movie!' The star claimed her career only went up after that, saying she 'wants to be doing this for the next 40 years.' Carrere also boasts a successful music career on top of her acting credits. She has won two Grammy awards for 'Best Hawaiian Music Album' with her musical partner Daniel Ho.
