No charges filed in Dearborn shooting that killed one person, police say
The Dearborn Police Department says no charges will be filed in connection with a shooting last week that killed one person. In an update on Monday, July 14, police say the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office cited "insufficient evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant was not acting in defense of another," according to a news release. Dearborn police were called on July 11 to the 1700 block of Walnut Street for a domestic situation. Police said a family member fatally shot another family member. The individual was then taken into custody pending a review by the prosecutor's office. Police did not release any other information on the case, including the names of the deceased individual or the family member who fired the shot. It is unclear what led to the shooting. The prosecutor's office has not yet released a statement on its decision.

Detroit Juvenile Detention Center employee accused of supplying teens with marijuana gummies
A Detroit Juvenile Detention Center employee is accused of giving four 17-year-old boys housed at the center marijuana gummies. Joseph Robinson, 22, of Detroit, is charged with four counts of furnishing a controlled substance (marijuana) to minors and four counts of furnishing contraband to prisoners. Wayne County prosecutors allege that Robinson, while working as a mentor at the facility on Wednesday night, gave gummies to the teens. Fellow employees allegedly noticed the four boys as being "lethargic, incoherent and in an impaired mental state," prosecutors say, and brought them to an area hospital. The teens were released later the same day. Robinson was arrested on Thursday after an investigation by detention center officials. "There is simply no excuse for the defendant's alleged behavior. It is especially reprehensible because the defendant was supposed to be a mentor to the young men housed at the JDF — and not a catalyst for criminal conduct. The result of his actions was the exact opposite of what this volunteer program was designed to be about," said Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy in a statement. Robinson is expected to be arraigned Saturday.

Trial date set for Detroit man charged in murder of prominent neurosurgeon
A trial date has been set for a Detroit man charged in the murder of prominent Detroit neurosurgeon Dr. Devon Hoover. Desmond Burks, 34, appeared in court Thursday for a formal arraignment after being bound over for trial last week. Burks will head to trial on Jan. 5, 2026. Burks is charged with first-degree premeditated murder, felony murder, larceny of over $20,000, using a computer to commit a crime, possession of a firearm by a felon, and three counts of felony firearm second offense. Hoover was found shot in the head and wrapped in a blanket in the attic of his Boston-Edison neighborhood home on April 23, 2023, after police conducted a wellness check at the residence. An autopsy in May 2023 revealed Hoover was shot twice in the back of the head. Burks was identified as a person of interest early in the investigation and was charged in August 2024. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said the investigation was complicated because many witnesses were reluctant to come forward with sensitive and personal information. Following Hoover's murder, Wayne County prosecutors say fraudulent transactions were reportedly made using the doctor's various bank accounts, and more than $30,000 was stolen from his accounts, as well as a Range Rover and two watches valued at $13,500. Authorities say Burks was seen on surveillance footage driving Hoover's Range Rover in the days following the doctor's murder. Prosecutors allege that text messages between Burks and Hoover established that the two were in an intimate relationship. Brian Douglas, a longtime friend of Hoover's, has attended nearly every one of Burks' court appearances, including Thursday's arraignment. He says Hoover's family and friends are finally one step closer to getting justice. "I was devastated when I heard. I was devastated because we almost reconnected, and we didn't," Douglas said. "When I saw who was victimized, and I heard who that person was, and I realized that person didn't deserve that, there was nothing else I could do but show up." Douglas says that after more than two years since his friend's murder, he still questions why such a good human being was taken away. "The point of it is, he should still be here," Douglas said. "He was murdered. He shouldn't have been murdered."

Grosse Pointe teen sentenced in fatal crash that killed 18-year-old passenger
A Grosse Pointe teen was sentenced Friday in connection with a 2023 fatal crash that killed 18-year-old Flynn Mackrell in Grosse Pointe Farms. Judge Mark McClory sentenced Kiernan Tague, 17, to a blended sentence of 19 to 38 months and imposed a juvenile placement in a Level 2 placement facility, which officials say will be at a residential facility placement. Tague was sentenced to probation but will serve 19 to 38 months if he violates his probation. Tague, who was 16 years old at the time of the crash, was charged in March 2024 with second-degree murder for the Nov. 13, 2023, crash that claimed the life of Mackrell. Police say Tague was driving 105 miles per hour in the area of Ridge Road and Moran Road in Grosse Pointe Farms, where the speed limit was 25 mph, when he lost control and struck a utility pole and a tree. In February 2025, Tague pleaded guilty to manslaughter with a motor vehicle with an adult designation. In July 2024, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office received a letter from Mackrell's mother requesting that Tague's mother be charged, alleging that she was negligent regarding her son's driving. At the time, Mackrell's parents compared the case to the Oxford High School shooter, Ethan Crumbley, and his parents, James and Jennifer Crumbley, who became the first parents in the U.S. to be held responsible for their child's actions in a school shooting. In August 2024, police released a new video showing Tague behind the wheel, driving at almost 140 miles per hour. CBS News Detroit obtained the video along with a detailed report that shows police responded to multiple calls about the teen's alleged violence and speeding. Those police records show Tague's mother was concerned about her son's driving. Wayne County prosecutors declined to charge the teen's mother in December 2024. "The evidence in this case will show that the defendant was driving in a residential neighborhood at speeds that rival speeding on our Michigan freeways. Sadly, Mr. Mackrell lost his life as a result. We know that the rules of the road exist for a reason, speed kills. Driving 25 in a residential neighborhood is mandated, not a mere suggestion," Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said in a statement. Currently, Tague has been remanded to the Wayne County Juvenile Detention Facility while awaiting his Level 2 placement.
