Cinema-goer who 'had my mind polluted' among complaints to film regulator

Appalled cinema-goers have written to complain over sex and violence being shown on Irish film screens, with one remarking they felt their 'mind was polluted' after watching a multi-Oscar winning movie. The Irish Film Classification Office (IFCO) has released details of correspondence it has received so far this year, which referenced seven different films, including award-winning movies The Brutalist and Anora. Most related to the film's age rating being too lenient, while others referenced the bad language and sexual content in them. A mother who had just brought her son to see the 15A-rated We Live In Time, a romantic drama starring Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield, was one of those who wrote in. 'I had no idea from the advertisement that there would be sexual content and nude scenes in the movie,' she said. It was embarrassing to take my 14-year-old son to watch the movie. Being a Catholic mom, this movie in my view should not be viewed by young adults in cinema and should not be screened at all. Another went to see The Brutalist and, having seen it won many awards, assumed it 'must be good'. 'I can honestly say I feel my mind has been polluted by watching that film,' the person wrote. 'It had a 16 rating, which I feel is appalling. I am 52 years old and the extreme pornography I saw last night at that film was most certainly not suitable for me, without my consent, and [should have] an 18 rating on it.' One took exception to the Barry Keoghan film Bring Them Down, saying they found it 'extremely disturbing, with graphic scenes of animal violence and someone's head being cut off' in a 15A film. A former school principal, meanwhile, said they were 'alarmed at the misogyny towards girls and women' in Anora, whose star Mikey Madison won the Oscar for best actress at the ceremony earlier this year. 'This movie gives a false impression of prostitution,' the former principal said. 'Human trafficking of girls and women is a serious issue here. I believe we as adults need to promote wholesome values that protect the mental health and wellbeing of our teenagers. This film gives all the wrong messages.' IFCO said none of these were considered to be a complaint, as per its complaints procedure, and all were resolved. 'At IFCO, we are committed to providing trusted guidance and information to help audiences make informed decisions on what video content they — and their children — view,' its director Dr Ciarán Kissane said, adding each classification decision was "carefully considered".

A source told People in February that "they've been really low-key and have been spending time together quietly". Last year, Andrew told Esquire how he keeps his love life private and won't comment on dating rumours. "I have never, and I won't ever, speak about or confirm or deny anything about my personal life with anyone, ever," he explained. In March, Monica and Andrew attended the Oscars but arrived at different times. Fans speculated about their relationship as they noticed they walked the red carpet at the same time. ‌ A month later, the duo were spotted on a holiday in Kyoto, with a fan sharing video footage of the two holding hands as they strolled around the city. Andrew was last linked to spiritual advisor Dr Kate Thomas, who confirmed their split in October last year. Meanwhile, Monica has rarely spoken about her love life but previously told L'Officiel Australia in 2023 that she has "a lovely community of friends." ‌ She said: "I love to host at my place and have everyone over for a Sunday morning, wear your PJs and just come, hang out and watch whatever, sports game or chat, catch up.... "Luckily, after abandoning my friends so much and leaving town, they're still willing to come over and hang out."

Netflix is quietly adding ‘tearjerking' fan favourite

Film lovers, mark your calendars as a perfect story of love and loss is set to be added to Netflix next month. We Live In Time is finally finding its home on Netflix UK on July 5, but warning, prepare for all the feels. It's a film that will make you laugh and cry, but most importantly, it teaches the audience that time is precious, following themes of grief in such a beautiful way that connects with so many watching. Starring the Hollywood dream team, Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh, We Live in Time will take you on a bittersweet journey through years of love, heartbreak, and enforcing the age-old message that life is a ticking time bomb. It follows the decade‑long, non-linear journey of Almut Brühl (Pugh), an ambitious chef, and Tobias Durand (Garfield), a marketing exec for Weetabix, as their relationship weaves through love, family, illness and everything in between. Hopeless romantics will need to grab the tissues as the film cleverly explores the life cycle of a relationship, cutting between timelines, past and present snapshots of a couple's story show how their love weathers recovery, birth and death. Directed by John Crowley, the film was released earlier this year and had cinema-goers sobbing and blubbering throughout the beautiful time-hopping story. Reviews say 'this broken timeline approach is part puzzle, part emotional puzzle – and more often than not, it works', while it was also echoed that the structure mostly avoids confusion thanks to cues like pregnancy bump and baby Ella's presence. In our four-star Metro review, Tori Brazier wrote that 'it is a wholesome and touching portrayal of a relationship acted out by two of the UK's biggest stars right now. And it's the perfect movie for when you want to sit in your feelings and be taken on an unashamedly emotional journey.' Still, not everyone bought in. The Telegraph described it as 'calamitous' and argued that some emotional impact is lost when you see outcomes before knowing their back stories. Viewers praised the film for how 'intimate' it felt – 'like watching a real couple in their private moments instead of watching a movie couple sharing big romantic gestures,' wrote @meb6x on Reddit. Another fan, @literary_bonna, described the box office hit as 'a classic 'wish you were them' love story'. More Trending With a 79% Rotten Tomatoes score, critics have labelled the film as a 'powerful melodrama'. If you did end up spending your weekly budget on the cinema trip (obviously you had to get that Tango ice blast), then you will be delighted to know that you can watch this firm fan fave again and again and again when it lands on Netflix next week. Whether you want to pretend you have something in your eye or you just need to weep on the sofa, We Live In Time is guaranteed to take you on an emotional rollercoaster, so buckle up!
