Uckfield traffic restrictions to ease as old hotel repairs begin

Disruptive traffic restrictions on an East Sussex high street are to ease from next month as repairs begin on an unsafe listed building. Scaffolding was erected on the pavement and four-way traffic lights set up after vertical cracks were found in the Grade II listed former Maiden's Head Hotel building in Uckfield High Street in March. Wealden District Council (WDC) said planned changes to existing scaffolding will mean restricting vehicle access is "no longer needed". The changes, part of a series of works set to last three weeks, are due to begin later on Tuesday subject to safety checks and weather conditions. Local businesses had blamed the traffic measures for a decline in footfall in the high street, with one business owner dubbing the situation "terrible" for the town. Others described the town as "quiet and dead" and suggested people were "avoiding Uckfield" because of the traffic disruption. Piratheepan Siva, owner of Weekes Newsagent for 16 years, said his business was nearly 40% down since the scaffolding went up and he had reduced its opening its latest update, WDC said "there is no need for a full road closure" when the scaffolding is modified as part of the first phase of works. It added: "If all goes to plan, we expect the High Street to fully reopen to traffic towards the end of the week beginning 4 August – most likely around 8 or 9 August."East Sussex Highways said it was continuing to work with council and building control colleagues on the project and added that: "traffic management will remain in place until we are asked to remove it by the district council."Parts of the building, which received listed status in 1953, date back to the 18th Century, according to Historic England.

Directory promotes use of Sussex food and drink

A directory to encourage food and drink outlets in Sussex to use more local products has been launched. It is part of the Sussex Six campaign, which began in 2023 with the aim of getting shops, pubs and restaurants to stock at least six locally sourced products. The directory lists over 600 producers in sectors such as bakery, fruit and veg, meat and poultry, dairy, and alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. The campaign already has the support of local authorities in Sussex. James Partridge, lead for governance, waste and local economy at Wealden District Council, said: "Wealden has a wide range of fantastic food and drink producers and some great shops, restaurants, pubs and cafes. "If they all took on just six more local products, they would help each other grow, employ more local people and reduce our impact on the environment." Ian Gibson, Mid Sussex District Council's cabinet member for sustainable economy and housing, said: "We want to encourage more businesses to sign the pledge to serve and sell more local produce, and urge members of the local community to buy local and support these businesses. "It's good for our local community, and it's good for the environment." Follow BBC Sussex on Facebook, on X, and on Instagram. Send your story ideas to southeasttoday@ or WhatsApp us on 08081 002250. New kiosk on the Cuckoo Trail moves a step closer

A new kiosk being built on the Cuckoo Trail in East Sussex has moved a step closer ahead of the works' expected completion in September. The kiosk will form part of the Horam Hub, which was given the green light by Wealden District Council in January. It will be located by the platform of the former Horam railway station on the trail, which runs along the former Cuckoo Line railway line. Ahead of completing the works, the council has invited expressions of interest to operate a concession from the new kiosk. The Horam Hub is one of a number of improvements being made to the Cuckoo Trail, which runs for 11 miles (17.7km) from Heathfield to Polegate with a three-mile (4.8km) extension to Shinewater Park in Eastbourne. WDC said the hub was a "large piece of land that offers the opportunity to meet friends and family, take a break after a long walk or cycle, and stroll around the remnants of the old Horam train station". Landscaping improvements and enhancements to the existing historical features - including the old railway platform and signs - also form part of this project. All improvements to the Cuckoo Trail are being funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, from which the council was awarded £645,000. Anyone interested in operating the kiosk must make a submission by 17:00 BST on 18 July. Follow BBC Sussex on Facebook, on X, and on Instagram.
