Spotted: Google Maps on Wear OS is testing an Expressive new UI

Rita El Khoury / Android Authority TL;DR Google Maps is testing a Material 3 Expressive-style redesign on Wear OS 5. The new UI features larger icons and an improved layout. The changes have only been rolled out to select users so far. Google Maps is getting a fresh look on smartwatches, and it's not waiting for Wear OS 6 to do it. The app is now testing a redesigned interface with some users on Wear OS 5, introducing a bolder, more modern layout in line with Google's Material 3 Expressive design. Screenshots and video shared with us by Telegram user Hardik show several UI changes. Captured on a Galaxy Watch 4 running Maps version 25.23.01.766241648.W, the new look features larger icons and layout choices that better suit small circular screens. Frequently used actions like 'Home,' 'Work,' and 'Recents' now appear as colorful modules, while navigation modes are presented as compact pills with clearer icons. Here's a video of the wearable in use with the new design elements: It's a noticeable departure from the old UI, which leaned heavily on minimalist icons and black menus. Where previous versions often buried options in stacked lists, the updated layout brings everything to the surface with bigger touch targets, echoing similar changes seen recently in redesigned Wear OS versions of Gmail and Keep. Check out these screenshots of the new UI: While the Maps redesign doesn't include the full theming found in the Wear OS 6 developer preview, it still reflects Google's broader push toward consistency and accessibility across its smartwatch apps. Compare the images above to how the interface currently looks for most Wear OS Google Maps users, as shown below: Google hasn't officially acknowledged the rollout, and not all users are seeing the new layout yet during this testing phase. However, with more core apps starting to follow suit, it's another sign that Google is laying the groundwork for a more unified visual experience. Got a tip? Talk to us! Our favorite smartwatch in 2025 just hit an irresistible price at 30% off

Samsung's Galaxy Watch 7 launched in 2024, and it was easily our favorite of the year, but here's the thing, it's also our favorite smartwatch in 2025. Simply put, it's the perfect device for the majority of people, a crowd-pleaser that's light on the wrist but not devoid of features. Not only can you easily keep track of your heart health, with an incredibly accurate heart rate sensor, the device is a joy to navigate, thanks to its intuitive swipe navigation. And the watch is running Wear OS 5, the latest release based on Android 14. In other words, this is a top-of-the-line smartwatch packing the latest and greatest. Well, Amazon is currently holding a sale on the watch that removes 30% from the $300 retail price, a savings of $91, bringing the cost down to $209, an absolutely fantastic deal for our favorite smartwatch currently on the market. If you're looking to run the latest and greatest version of Wear OS on reliable hardware that's built to last, then the Galaxy Watch 7 should be at the top of your list, which is why we gave it an 8.5 out of 10 in our review. Of course, this watch comes in two different sizes, and it's the 40mm device that's currently on sale for 30% off, the green model to be specific. For $10 more, you could pick up the cream. Now, if you're looking for something larger, the good news is that the 44mm models are also on sale, but only at 24% off at $249. Still, every model is on sale, so it just depends on what size and color you want, and how much you're looking to spend. For me I love the look of the green 40mm model, which would fit my dainty wrist a heck of a lot better than the 44mm. But that's what's great about today's sale, you're not beholden to any one model. Still, today's best deal is for the green 40mm Galaxy Watch 7, and at 30%, you'll be very hard pressed to find a better price. In fact, this is the second-best price we've ever seen, so make sure to act fast while supplies last.

Wear OS 6 is coming, and we've got an official launch window

Supplied by Google TL;DR Google has confirmed that Wear OS 6, based on Android 16, will launch later this year. The company says Wear OS 6 will be available on the Pixel Watch series and on new watches from partners in the 'coming months.' The new smartwatch software brings a revised UI and up to 10% better battery life. Google is gearing up to release Android 16 in the coming months, and it brings a tweaked look as well as plenty of other improvements. The company is also working on Wear OS 6, and it's now revealed a vague launch window. Google confirmed at its Android Show event that Wear OS 6 will roll out in the 'coming months' to Pixel Watch models and new watches from partners. For what it's worth, Wear OS 5 debuted in July 2024 with the Galaxy Watch 7 series. So don't be surprised if Wear OS 6 debuts alongside the Galaxy Watch 8 series or shortly after the Samsung watch launch. Wear OS 6 is based on Android 16 and offers several improvements. Perhaps the most notable change is the revised UI, which is broadly in line with Android 16's Material 3 Expressive style. The new UI offers larger buttons, smoother scrolling, color theming based on your watch face, and more. Aside from the tweaked visuals, Google says it's 'continuing to improve performance and optimize power.' It specifically claimed that you can expect up to 10% better battery life. This could be a notable gain for people who are struggling with smartwatch endurance. The smartwatch-related news doesn't stop here, either. Google also confirmed that Gemini was coming to Wear OS watches, but you won't need Wear OS 6 to take advantage of the modern chatbot. Got a tip? Talk to us! Why the OnePlus Watch 3 is missing a key Apple Watch feature in the US and Canada

The OnePlus Watch 3 has officially launched and has several new features, including an ECG (electrocardiogram) analyzer, which was unavailable in the second-generation model. However, as OnePlus told 9to5Google, this feature will not be accessible to users in the U.S. and Canada because the watch has not received official certification for its ECG capabilities from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Despite this limitation, all users, regardless of location, will have access to the new '60-Second Health Check-In' feature expected to be released in the year's second quarter. The OnePlus Watch 3, priced at $329, is a significant upgrade over its predecessor, the OnePlus Watch 2. The new model boasts a slightly larger 1.5-inch LTPO AMOLED display with a peak brightness of 2,200 nits compared to the 1.43-inch display with just 600 nits on the OnePlus Watch 2. This increased brightness enhances visibility in bright sunlight. Additionally, the OnePlus Watch 3 features a functional rotating crown that makes it easier to navigate menus and apps. This addresses a common complaint about Watch 2, which had a crown that only served as a button. The new watch also has a titanium bezel, which is more durable and lighter than the stainless steel bezel found in the previous model. The OnePlus Watch 3 features Wear OS 5, an improved coprocessor, battery life, and various enhancements. It is particularly notable for its advanced health-related features, starting with the new health check-in that tracks multiple metrics, including heart rate, SpO2 levels, vascular health, wrist temperature, sleep patterns, and overall physical and mental well-being. Furthermore, thanks to upgraded sensors and algorithms, OnePlus promises more accurate fitness tracking for outdoor activities like running. The Watch 3 includes over 100 sports and 11 professional modes for detailed workout analysis. The $329 OnePlus Watch 3 is now available for preorder.

OnePlus Watch 3: what to expect

The OnePlus Watch 3 is expected to be revealed on February 18, and TechRadar recently got a first look at this wearable device. The new watch from the maker of the OnePlus 13 is expected to feature Wear OS 5, powered by the Snapdragon W5 chipset, which also includes a secondary MCU chip. This combination is expected to provide up to 120 hours of battery life between charges. As OnePlus Europe's Chief Marketing Officer Celina Shi explained, 'Our software seamlessly switches operations between these two chipsets enabling the OnePlus Watch 3 to run with maximum efficiency and strike the perfect balance between peak performance and extended battery life.' The OnePlus Watch 3 should feature a rotating digital crown alongside a titanium bezel with a sapphire crystal face. This is an update from the OnePlus Watch 2 that features stainless steel. How that digital crown compares to the Apple Watch Series 10 remains to be seen. According to Shi, 'With the ability to both press and rotate, the rotating crown makes navigating through apps and menus efficient and intuitive – and ultimately the user experience even better.' Beyond this, little is known about the new wearable device. Recent rumors indicate that the upcoming watch will include features now standard on smartwatches, such as health and fitness tools. Like recent Samsung Galaxy Watches such as the Galaxy Watch 7, it is expected to monitor blood pressure. This feature is projected to be available this fall with the release of the Apple Watch Series 11 and the Apple Watch Ultra 3. The OnePlus Watch 3 should be available in the U.S., Europe, and other locations when released. The new watch will be revealed on Tuesday, February 18, at 8 a.m. EST.
