Weatherford International plc (WFRD): A Bull Case Theory

We came across a bullish thesis on Weatherford International plc (WFRD) on The Small Cap Strategist's Substack by Strategist and Architect. In this article, we will summarize the bulls' thesis on WFRD. Weatherford International plc (WFRD)'s share was trading at $53.68 as of July 15th. WFRD's trailing and forward P/E were 8.55 and 9.5 respectively according to Yahoo Finance. Early morning view of a well site construction in progress, with the sky and horizon a glowing backdrop. Weatherford International (WFRD) is a global energy services firm with operations in 75 countries and a diversified portfolio spanning the entire well lifecycle, from drilling to abandonment. Following a major restructuring in 2019, the company has focused on deleveraging, cost optimization, and digital transformation, exemplified by a recent partnership with AWS to modernize operations and enhance customer value. Despite a challenging macro environment and a 12% revenue decline in Q1 2025 due to weakness in Mexico, North America, and Europe, Weatherford maintains strong adjusted free cash flow generation and a leaner cost base, having reduced headcount and streamlined operations. Management, led by CEO Girish Saligram and supported by a board with deep industry experience, has prioritized disciplined capital allocation through debt reduction, sustained dividends, and share buybacks. While its market share trails peers like SLB and Halliburton, Weatherford's competitive edge lies in its specialized technologies, integrated service model, and growing suite of digital solutions such as ForeSite and CygNet. Analysts suggest the stock is undervalued, with price targets up to $145 versus current levels near $90. The company's 8.6x P/E multiple and healthy net leverage ratio of 0.5x offer additional valuation comfort. However, risks include cyclicality, geopolitical tensions, and competitive pressures. A reverse thesis sees these headwinds limiting upside. Yet, if Weatherford executes on its strategy and benefits from a stabilizing energy market, its high free cash flow, digital positioning, and deleveraging efforts could drive a significant rerating, making WFRD a compelling long-term investment for risk-tolerant investors. Previously we covered a on Valaris Limited by Alpha Ark in February 2025, which highlighted the company's modern offshore fleet, constrained rig supply, and significant discount to replacement value. The company's stock price has appreciated approximately 1.23% since our coverage. This is because day rate momentum offset macro pressures. The thesis still stands as offshore fundamentals remain intact. Strategist and Architect shares a similar view on Weatherford, but emphasizes on diversification, digital initiatives, and capital discipline. Weatherford International plc (WFRD) is not on our list of the 30 Most Popular Stocks Among Hedge Funds. As per our database, 38 hedge fund portfolios held WFRD at the end of the first quarter which was 36 in the previous quarter. While we acknowledge the potential of WFRD as an investment, we believe certain AI stocks offer greater upside potential and carry less downside risk. Ex-Weatherford Chief Guns for 2nd Energy SPAC on Heels of 1st

Retired Weatherford International CEO Bernard Duroc-Danner is planning a second energy-focused blank check company, Pyrophyte Acquisition Corp. II. The Houston-based special purpose acquisition corporation (SPAC) expects to raise $175 million and trade on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol 'PAIIU,' according to an S-1 filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). 'We may pursue an initial business combination in any business or industry and in any geographic region but expect to target companies that are in the energy sector,' Bernard Duroc-Danner, the retired Weatherford executive, reported in the S-1. Duroc-Danner, Pyrophyte II's CEO, and Sten Gustafson, CFO, formed the SPAC May 1. UBS Investment Bank is the lead book-running manager; the co-manager is Brookline Capital Markets, a unit of Arcadia Securities. While looking at acquisition targets, 'we intend to focus our search initially on identifying companies in the energy sector that constitute critical links in the supply chain for, and/or service, the growing segments from the full spectrum of the energy ecosystem,' Duroc-Danner wrote. 'Specifically, we seek to focus on differentiated targets that provide critical minerals and materials, equipment and/or technologies that support the span of energy solutions from traditional to renewable energy.' The company emphasized that it doesn't intend to acquire companies that are 'excessively leveraged.' The first Pyrophyte Acquisition Corp. raised $201.25 million in an October 2021 IPO. In November 2023, it announced plans to buy Canada-based Sio Silica Corp., a sand miner that was known as CanWhite Sands until January 2022. As of June 27, Pyrophyte I was 'currently in the process of completing its initial business combination with Sio Silica,' Duroc-Danner reported in the new SPAC's SEC filing. The energy veteran formed oilfield services and equipment firm EVI Inc. in 1987, which later became a part of Weatherford. The company was trading on the NASDAQ at about $50 at press time for a market cap of $3.7 billion. Duroc-Danner retired in 2016 and was named chairman emeritus. He was also chairman of oilfield services firm Grant Prideco, which was spun out of Weatherford in 2000 and bought by National Oilwell, which is now NOV Inc., in 2008 for $7.5 billion. SPAC CFO Gustafson was CEO of oilfield helicopter operator Era Group, which he spun out of Seacor Holdings in 2013. He was also a member of Saudi Arabia's steering committee to form a commercial helicopter operator in the country. More recently, he was a director at CHC Helicopter and chairman of Norway's Golden Energy Offshore. Privately held, Lafayette, Louisiana-based PHI Group, the largest Gulf Coast oilfield helicopter operator, recently withdrew its S-1 to IPO. It had been filed in October 2023. In a May 23 SEC withdrawal notice, the company said 'it has determined not to pursue the contemplated public offering at this time.' A Pyrophyte II board member, Jamie Sexton, was managing director and head of oilfield services for Lehman Brothers; a partner in private equity firm White Deer Energy; and a partner in oilfield services at energy investment-banking firm PPHB. More recently, he was director, U.S. operations, for Interra Energy Services. Currently, he is a partner and COO at Houston-based hedge fund Encore Global Management. Advisory board members are to include private equity investor Riverstone Holdings' co-founders Pierre Lapeyre and David Leuschen. Prior to forming Riverstone, Leuschen, who has led several SPACs, was founder and head of Goldman Sachs' energy and power group, while Lapeyre was managing director. Also to join the advisory board is Chris Abbate, a managing partner and co-CEO at Breakwall Capital. Previously, he was a Riverstone Holdings partner and founded and co-led Riverstone Credit Partners. Duroc-Danner reported in Pyrophyte II's S-1 that 'transitioning to novel energy solutions will require continued production from conventional and renewable sources alike.' Natural gas will 'continue to be a key component of the energy ecosystem as it addresses the challenges stemming from intermittent renewable energy solutions while meeting the massive demand for power generation with relatively lower carbon emissions,' he added. To meet overall global energy demand, 'traditional fossil-fuel processes will represent $11 trillion in investment through 2035—comprising upstream, midstream and downstream oil and gas investment—nearly doubling the $6 trillion investment from renewables.' In addition to conventional fuels, Pyrophyte II intends to look at critical minerals, industrial decarbonization, alternative energy and fuels, electrical infrastructure and energy storage. Dad Going to Work Hears 'Wait'—Unprepared for What Security Cam Captures

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A father leaving for work was forced to make a U-turn after hearing "Wait!" coming from his driveway. In security camera footage captured on the Ring doorbell, Aaron Weatherford pulled out of his driveway after calling out, "Bye! Love you!" to his family inside. Seconds later, his 7-year-old daughter, Ella, runs after him yelling, "Dad! Wait! Dad!" Split screen of Ring doorbell camera footage of Black car reversing out of driveway and 7-year-old girl holding up her arm. Split screen of Ring doorbell camera footage of Black car reversing out of driveway and 7-year-old girl holding up her arm. @dadatbat Unaware, Weatherford had already started down the road, until his phone lit up with a FaceTime call. "Initially, I thought something tragic happened," Weatherford told Newsweek. "A fall? Something with mom? She was holding the phone just under her chin, enough for me to see her tears coming down from her cheeks. My heart sank." But the truth, while less dramatic, hit him even harder. In a soft, sad tone, Ella told her dad: "You left and didn't hug me." The clip then cuts to Weatherford pulling back into the driveway and walking into the house. He posted the footage on Instagram (@dadatbat) with the caption: "Don't ever miss a chance to love on your kiddos not just with words, but with actions." For the dad of three, those words carry the weight of profound personal loss. "We lost my oldest daughter, Olivia, September 12, 2023 to pediatric cancer after four and a half year battle," he told Newsweek. "I cherished moments with her and our family when we were together... [but] I look back on those moments and think, 'Where would I have shown love more?' If we say, 'I love you' I want them to know what love looks like, not just what it sounds like." That mindset has shaped every interaction since. Hospital visits for Olivia were spent away from his two younger children and now, he's got a new perspective on parenting. "Our perspective now has changed to focus more on intentionality and essentially addressing our internal need to 'make up' for lost time," Weatherford said. "If I can make a moment and heal tears, I do whatever I can to do it. My wife and I felt so helpless and useless at times during the cancer journey. If I can, I will." Weatherford's reel has had an overwhelming response online. Since it was posted on March 20, the clip has been viewed almost 19 million times. Thousands of comments poured in with admiration for his actions. "So precious! She'll always remember you turning around for her!" one user wrote. "I would rather be late and hug my kids one more time, every day of the week. No matter what the appointment or meeting. Nothing is more important than my family," another added. Many others believe Ella saved her father from a fateful car accident by getting him to turn around. Weatherford told Newsweek that the heartwarming moment between him and his daughter reinforced the idea of making every moment count. Ella, who is the middle child, has the most memories of Olivia's journey, and her parents' trips to the hospital. "I've always been worried that me leaving so often with Liv would impact her and Eli, so I've tried to be more intentional with treating their emotions and pivotal moments of impact carefully," Weatherford said. "That's where this particular moment fell dead center in my heart. I didn't even consider the consequences of work when I answered that call. For her, for my family, they take priority."
