Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane weather: Urgent warning to millions as powerful storm barrels towards the east coast

Australians on the New South Wales coast have been warned to brace for intense wind and rain as a low pressure system intensifies over the weekend. An east coast low will sweep over the state's coastal areas from early next week. The system will form and linger on the east coast for at least 24 hours, Weatherzone meteorologist Felix Levesque has said. The east coast low could arrive earlier if a coastal trough deepens off northern NSW on Monday, he said. The forecaster said the system could bring showers and wind gusts which could escalate into heavy and potentially flooding rainfall as well as damaging winds. An alarming map from Weatherzone, which modelled mean sea level pressure and 24-hour rainfall for the low near the Mid North Coast, appeared covered in red. The forecaster said strong winds would cause large waves across the Tasman Sea. Waves could reach as high as 13metres near coastal parts of the Sydney, Central Coast, Hunter and Mid North Coast regions between Tuesday and Thursday. Up to 100-200mm of rain could fall in the 36-48 hours up to Thursday in the Mid North Coast and Hunter, which could extend as far as the South Coast. Rainfall of up to 300mm is possible in some parts of Mid North Coast, Hunter and Central Coast. Sydney Saturday: Partly cloudy. The chance of morning frost in the outer west. ‘Unseasonable': Cold snap sets stage for wild bout of wet weather in Qld, NSW Cold snap sets stage for ‘unseasonably' wild weather

Australia's east coast is gearing up for a bout of 'unseasonable' wet conditions, as a new surface trough threatens to dump rainfall totals up to 300mm over the next week. A new surface trough forming in Far North Queensland is forecast to bring wet weather through the Sunshine State over Saturday, building through the day all the way from the Gulf Coast, according to the Bureau of Meteorology. BOM Meteorologist Jonathan How said this was 'unseasonable' due to Far North Queensland being in the dry season. 'As we head into Sunday, we see showers and areas of rain building all the way down the coast towards Mackay and Rockhampton,' he said. Cloud cover and rain systems are expected to remain in the area as the system heads further south, with some areas likely to experience between 10-25mm on Monday night and in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Over Monday, the rain system is expected to creep into southeast Queensland and then northeast NSW. Weatherzone states rainfall accumulations of 100-200mm are possible over a period of 36-48 hours to Thursday next week, across parts of the Mid North Coast and Hunter, possibly extending as far south as the South Coast. 'The deep feed of moisture coming off the Tasman Sea could interact with local topography around the Mid North Coast, Hunter and Central Coast, with rainfall totals reaching 300mm possible in some parts,' a Weatherzone spokesman said. The low pressure system is forecast to move down past the New South Wales Central Coast on Tuesday, bringing heavy rain to parts of the Hunter, the Illawarra and Sydney. The system is also expected to intensify as it makes its way past Sydney, so damaging winds and lashing coastal wave patterns can be expected until Wednesday at the earliest and possibly even Thursday. It is understood the NSW State Emergency Service is currently engaged with the Bureau of Meteorology to make sure its various branches, particularly those along coastal NSW, are appropriately informed, equipped and prepared to tackle any situations which would be most likely to arise late on Tuesday or throughout Wednesday. An SES spokesperson said the organisation was 'encouraging residents to stay informed about possible severe weather next week'. 'The Bureau of Meteorology advises a low-pressure system might develop off the NSW Coast, which could impact NSW from as early as next Monday through to Thursday, depending on where it forms,' the spokesperson said. 'Potential impacts include widespread moderate to heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, damaging winds along the NSW Coast and large powerful surf. Coastal riverine and flash flooding may occur.' 'We do not know exactly where or if it will, but we are preparing SES personnel and assets right along the NSW Coast. There is a high degree of uncertainty as to whether the low will form close to the coast or further offshore.' An operational update published on Thursday said the SES had received more than 1,400 calls and responded to several hundred incidents 'as damaging winds lashed the Illawarra South Coast, Snowy Mountains, Blue Mountains, Sydney Metro and parts of the Central Coast and Hunter'.

Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane weather: Yet another polar blast to fuel bitterly cold temperatures across Australia

While gusty winds and heavy rains in Australia's south have finally eased, yet another icy polar blast will continue to fuel bitterly cold temperatures. An incoming cold front will see showers in the southeast of the country persist, with the cold conditions to take effect from Thursday and linger well into next week. Weatherzone meteorologist Felix Levesque explained the worst of the front will affect southeast Australia and will feel cooler than usual due to powerful winds. 'Strong west-to-southwest winds brought by a powerful cold front, along with cooling showers, will emphasise the cold and make it feel between three to seven degrees colder than actual temperature over the next couple of days,' he said. 'Chilly mornings will take hold into the weekend as this polar air mass slowly dissipates and high pressure brings clearer skies and lighter winds.' Some showers are possible over southwest Australia on Friday due to a weak low-pressure system sitting off the coast. A trough is expected to develop in northern Queensland from Friday evening and is likely to bring some showers to the region. The freezing cold temperatures are expected to linger for at least the rest of the month with Canberra on track to record its coldest June since 1984. Sydney Friday: Partly cloudy. Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane weather: Freezing polar blast sparks weather warnings in five states and territories

Millions of Aussies in five states will be blasted with rain, damaging winds, thunderstorms and snow as a cold front wreaks havoc across the country. A wet weather system tracking across New South Wales and Victoria will bring powerful wind gusts and rain with warnings issued across multiple states. The poor weather is fuelled by a complex low-pressure system which moved from the west coast to the southeastern states earlier this week. That system will also be the driving force behind a 'large pool of cold polar air moving northwards from the Southern Ocean' across the southeast, Weatherzone meteorologist Ben Domensino warned. 'This procession of cold fronts, along with the associated low pressure system, will cause damaging winds, showers and wintry temperatures across parts of SA, Tasmania, Victoria, the ACT and NSW on Wednesday,' he said. 'Severe weather warnings have been issued for damaging wind gusts in parts of all five states and territories.' Major cities included in that severe weather warning include Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong, with winds up to 100km/h possible. Conditions are even worse in alpine regions, which could see gusts up to 120km/h and possible blizzard conditions. A severe weather warning has been issued for large parts of NSW and Victoria, including Sydney, due to strong winds (pictured, a severity map of winds on Wednesday evening) The heavy rain sweeping across the southeast is expected to fall as snow down to 500metres on Wednesday and 900metres on Thursday. 'This should deliver about 20cm to 30cm of fresh snow to the mainland ski resorts, making up for the snow that was melted by Monday night's pre-frontal rain,' Mr Domensino said. The worst of the low pressure system is forecast to be driven offshore by a high pressure system from Thursday. That high pressure system originated in the Great Australian Bight and is set to bring calm conditions to much of central and western parts of Australia from Wednesday.
