DIARMUID CONNOLLY is backing Ger Brennan for the Dublin job. Connolly's St. Vincent's clubmate is the red hot favourite for the gig after stepping down as Advertisement 2 BoyleSports ambassador and Dublin legend Diarmuid Connolly has backed Ger Brennan to be a success as new boss 2 But Connolly insists his former teammate much search far and wide for the best talent Brennan led the Wee County to their first Leinster title in 68 years this summer, and quit the post just three days after Dessie Farrell vacated the Dublin hotseat. Connolly would love to see his old pal get the nod - but insists whoever gets it needs to scour the capital for new talent after their limp He said: 'Gerry's a really good man manager. He's always with a smile on his face. I doubt he'd be overawed by the job at all. 'He's the sort of guy that can walk in anywhere and fill the room. Even talking to guys that are out working with him in UCD and stuff, he's a really good guy to have around. Advertisement read more on gaa 'He's a good motivator too. That Louth team hadn't won in a long few years. He brought them to success. I thought it was a bit leftfield, maybe leaving so early. 'Look, if he's the man for the job, I think everybody should get behind him." Connolly knows Brennan would be a great fit for the hotseat, but admits there are plenty of candidates who might fancy it. The seven-time All-Ireland winner says no matter who gets the nod needs to scour the county for new talent - and insists the Dubs have not gone away. 'So yeah, you'd have to look to Ger Brennan in that sense, because he had success at the level we're talking about. Watch RTE pundits' contrasting reaction to full-time whistle of Tipperary's epic win over Kilkenny 'For me, probably Robbie Brennan would have been front and centre in that conversation. I know Dec Darcy has been put in the loop, Johnny Cooper has been put in the loop. 'Ger looks like, the rumour on the ground is that he has first refusal on the job, but I don't know if that's actually true. I haven't spoke to the man myself, so I don't know whether that's true or not. Advertisement 'It's very easy to jump on the bandwagon and say Dublin are finished - they're on the decline, they're this, that and the other. 'The next manager slash coaching team that come in, will hopefully throw the net far and wide in Dublin GAA circles. 'I know the players that are in that Dublin camp. I know the players that are playing club football in Dublin and there is serious talent there.'

Ger Brennan's Louth exit stuns former manager of Wee County
Former Louth manager Colin Kelly was stunned by the resignation of Ger Brennan at the Wee County hotseat after guiding them to a first Leinster championship in 68 years. Kelly managed the Louth senior footballers between 2014 and 2017, guiding them to successive league promotions to Division 2. Speaking to RTÉ, Kelly said: "I suppose overall, it's shock really. It happened so suddenly. "It went out on social media [on Tuesday] afternoon. All of a sudden now, you're in a situation where you've no manager, and I suppose it's deja vu really because we've been through this with Mickey Harte [leaving] a couple of years ago. "So it's probably shock when you think of Leinster champions and a couple of weeks later now, you're looking for a new manager." Brennan is now seen by some as the heir presumptive to the Dublin throne after Dessie Farrell's resignation, but Kelly doesn't believe that the vacancy at Brennan's home county had any affect on his decision. "I don't really think that the Dublin manager's job would have a part to play in it," he said. "From our point of view, we probably wouldn't have been expecting it so the process starts now to look for someone new." For Louth, the process starts now for the Leinster champions to appoint a new figure at the helm, whether they promote a coach in the Wee County's youth setup or look outward remains to be seen. Kelly said: "Fergal Reel has done a hell of a job with the U20s, got to a first All-Ireland final, the minor management team have played in a Leinster final and Gavin Devlin is now working within the county. "Tony McEntee, Oisin McConville, there's a lot of guys out there now in close proximity to the Louth team and who knows at this stage. It's early days." McEntee left Sligo's footballers after five years at the helm while McConville's agreement with Wicklow has run its course, although he may renew for another season.

Next Dublin GAA manager betting odds as two leading contenders emerge
Ger Brennan and Declan Darcy have emerged as the leading contenders with the bookies to become Dublin's new senior football manager. Dessie Farrell announced he would be stepping down from his role as Dublin boss following his side's All-Ireland quarter-final loss to Tyrone on Saturday evening at Croke Park. "I would have informed the county board at the start of this season that regardless of what happened, this was going to be my last season," Farrell said after the game. "The players were aware of that and I just informed them inside there to confirm it. "It's been a privilege. As a player and as a coach, I've been involved with Dublin for the guts of 40 years. So it's been a long, long time. "It's been very much part and parcel of my life. I've met some many amazing people along the way, all the backroom teams, all the coaching of the underage teams, minor teams, U21 teams, and the senior teams for the last couple of years. I've met some special people. "I've had a ringside seat in many ways to some of the greatest warriors that ever played the sport. I've been involved with some of them from under 13 right the way through to today. I've seen them grow from young boys to young men to older men. "That's a journey I'm so grateful for. I'm delighted to be involved for as long as I have. We've had some good days and bad days, but that's all a part of professional sport. "Some special memories, and some special bonds and relationships." Speculation is already swirling over who will replace Farrell in the hotseat for next season. Ger Brennan, who guided Louth to this year's Leinster title, a first in 68 years for the Wee County, is the early pick of the oddsmakers and punters, and is now an odds-on 10/11 shot (from 6/4) to make a return to his home county. Former Dublin selector, Declan Darcy, who was an integral part of the Jim Gavin side that claimed six Sam Maguires in a row, is also well-fancied at 11/10. Brian O'Keeffe, spokesperson for BoyleSports, said: 'It's already a red-hot race to replace Dessie Farrell as Dublin manager, and while Declan Darcy is a lively contender, it's Ger Brennan who is the punters' pick to revitalise the Dubs after working his magic on the Wee County.'
