Roosters' $2m recruit told he's free to leave as new suitor emerges
The Roosters have reportedly dropped a bombshell and told high-profile recruit Dom Young he's free to leave the club immediately and a suitor has already emerged. Young arrived at the Roosters from the Knights last season on a four-year deal worth more than $2 million, but last week he got dropped to the NSW Cup. FOX LEAGUE, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every game of every round in the 2025 NRL Telstra Premiership, LIVE in 4K with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited-time offer. Now, just 18 months into his contract, he's been granted permission to talk to rival clubs so that he can leave before the June 30 deadline, according to The Daily Telegraph. Young broke Newcastle's single-season try-scoring record in 2023 with 25 and then scored 20 tries in 22 games for the Roosters last season. The 23-year-old scored five tries in the Roosters' opening five games this season but his form has fallen off a cliff over the past month, particularly in defence. The Knights' attack has struggled badly this season and they're reportedly interested in bringing Young back to the club. Young is one several high-profile recruits that haven't worked out in recent years, with Brandon Smith also being shown the door. Rugby league reporter Danny Weidler said the club is looking to keep veteran winger Daniel Tupou and offload Young. 'There was also a fair bit of talk around Magic Round that the Roosters are shopping Daniel Tupou to Japanese rugby,' Weidler said on the Big Sports Breakfast. 'They've now decided that they've got him on contract for next year, they're going to keep him. 'He's never really been on big money, he's always been paid a bit under. That looks like settling down. 'For Dom Young, the other winger, there's a lot of chatter that he's on the way out. Even though he's got a contract. 'Newcastle have heard that chatter, where he was before, and while they haven't heard anything official, they're definitely keeping an eye on it. Because I think they could see him back at that club one day.' Weidler also revealed that Roosters young gun half Sandon Smith recently rejected a contract extension offer from the club. 'Sandon Smith … I know that a little while ago, the Roosters tried to upgrade and extend him for around $400,000 a year,' Weidler said. 'He said 'no'. Whether that suddenly develops into a situation where Sandon, if he keeps playing well, and they're worried about signing Cherry, whether they could keep him as well. 'I found it unusual, even before the Cherry talk started, that [Smith] knocked it back.'

Channel Nine footy reporter Danny Weidler reveals the bizarre start of his feud with Braith Anasta - after accusing the footy great of threatening to beat him up
Channel Nine reporter Danny Weidler has opened up on the surprising incident behind his feud with Braith Anasta after accusing the former NRL star of threatening to bash him. Weidler, who works for the Sydney Morning Herald in addition to Nine, had been called out by Anasta on his BTFU podcast as he slammed rival NRL pundits who claimed he has a conflict of interest because he is also a player manager. Anasta manages multiple current players and also works as the host of Fox Sports' NRL 360 show, where he regularly discusses player contracts and movements. On the podcast, Anasta talked about holding a charity boxing bout against journalists. 'Sign me up. Sign me up now,' he said. When his co-host and fellow ex-NRL star Reni Maitua suggested Weidler's SMH colleague Michael Chammas, Anasta replied, 'Don't worry about Chammas, the other bloke, Weidler. I'd love to [fight him].' Weidler then hit back at Anasta in his SMH column earlier this month. 'The smart approach from Anasta would be to keep his head down instead of saying he wants to bash people about 15 years older than him,' Weidler wrote. 'This columnist is definitely not Mike Tyson, but I'm not so sure that Anasta doesn't think he is Jake Paul.' Now Weidler has used his appearance on the How's That? podcast to reveal what he believes started the feud - and whether he'd punch on with the 43-year-old. 'Braith? No,' he said when he was asked about getting into the ring. When pressed further on why Anasta had called him out for a fight, Weidler said: 'He doesn't like me because I call him out as having conflicts of interest as a player-manager. 'People don't always like the truth. 'Everybody's got some other role in the game and with Braith... no, he's 15 years younger than me, he's fitter than a Mallee bull.' Weidler then revealed he had previously beaten the former Bulldogs star over 18 holes of golf - despite the fact Anasta is highly skilled at the sport. Pictured: A mocked-up boxing promotion featuring Weidler and Anasta that's on the former Bulldogs star's Instagram 'He won't like this story being out,' Weidler began. 'Many years ago we played a game of golf together on the coast and I beat him. 'I reckon that's why he doesn't like me... there are other reasons. 'He wants to fight me in the ring. 'I'm not silly enough to take on a bloke who is 15 years younger than me.' Anasta has previously been questioned regarding his alleged conflict of interest. He claimed the accusations - which were brought up as Anasta commented on the stunning split between the Wests Tigers and teenage star Lachlan Galvin - were 'hypocrisy' as Nine and SMH commentators have their own divided loyalties. But Weidler had subsequently clapped back at that. 'To try to dismiss the criticism, Anasta chose instead to attack the Nine network and its highest-profile figure Phil Gould in a podcast, calling him out because of his dual roles as a TV expert and the boss of the Bulldogs. None of this was new,' Weidler wrote. 'He then tried to attack the likes of Paul Gallen, Billy Slater, Cameron Smith and even Andrew Johns but barely laid a verbal glove on them. 'It was not a well-considered or well-thought-out rant, but it has been noted by some of the people who he thinks are his mates.'

Tigers in $5 million Lachie Galvin move as top Sydney rival 'refuses' to make offer
The Wests Tigers are reportedly ready to offer young gun Lachie Galvin a new $5 million deal to keep him at the club long-term and ward off interest from rivals. The 19-year-old enjoyed a superb debut season in the NRL in 2024 and has emerged as one of the most sought-after young playmakers in the game, with many touting him as a future representative star. Galvin's current deal with the Tigers runs until the end of the 2026 season, meaning he will hit the open market on November 1 if he doesn't sign a new deal with the Tigers before then. Benji Marshall's side will be desperate to hang onto their star No.6 but with elite halves proving hard to come by in recent times, competition for the teenage star's signature is likely to be fierce. Speaking on Nine's 100% Footy on Monday night, veteran league reporter Danny Weidler said he'd heard whispers coming out of the Tigers that they were planning on offering Galvin a new five-year deal worth $1 million per season. "It's hard getting info out of the Tigers at the moment, but the info I'm getting is it's most likely to be around a five-year offer and around the $5 million mark," Weidler said told Nine. "So the Tigers are not going to muck around, they're not going to confirm this obviously, but that's what I'm hearing." Galvin's management might want to wait until November 1 to see if rival clubs can better whatever offer the Tigers come up with but Weidler says the Roosters will not be one of them. The Tri Colours have the salary cap space to make a play a halves partnership between Galvin and Sam Walker would be an enticing prospect, but Weidler says a move to the Roosters will not happen because the club refuses to deal with the 19-year-old's agent, Isaac Moses. "One club that won't have a crack at Lachie Galvin is the Roosters," Weidler added. "I think the Tigers have been made aware of that. And I guess it's in part to do with the manager Isaac Moses, the Roosters refuse to deal with him. And Lachie Galvin's manager is Isaac Moses." The Roosters have also been heavily linked with signing Daly Cherry-Evans when he leaves Manly at the end of the season. While Newcastle's 10-year, $14 million signing of Dylan Brown from 2026 illustrates the demand for quality halves in the NRL, veteran commentator Phil Gould is worried about the effects Galvin's huge price tag could have on the playmaker, at such a young age. "It's brilliant money (but) it puts a lot of pressure and scrutiny on him," the Bulldogs supremo said on the program. "He probably shouldn't be on that money at that age, there is no reason to do that to a young kid. Neither the club nor his manager will allow that to happen. They aren't going to allow him to come through the system as he should. It is too much scrutiny. "Money comes with responsibilities, obligations and expectations - you want to throw it on a kid that young? Go and ask all the great playmakers, they didn't want it at that age." Galvin proved in his rookie season in 2024 that he's more than capable of dealing with the pressure of being an NRL playmaker though, and he showed maturity beyond his years to announce himself as a future superstar of the game. Gould's comments suggest the Bulldogs will also not be making a play for Galvin's signature if he hits the open market. But he says it would be a 'tragedy' for the teenage star and the Tigers if they were unable to agree on a new deal to keep him at the club long-term. "He needs to stay at the Tigers. The Tigers need to come up with something to keep him there," Gould added. "I hope he stays at the Wests Tigers, I really do (because) it would be a tragedy for him to lose that place." Galvin's first big test of 2025 will come on Saturday night against the high-flying Broncos, with a suspension to halves partner Jarome Luai meaning the 19-year-old will have to take on even greater responsibility in the playmaking department.
