Shane MacGowan's sister on his passion for hurling ahead of All-Ireland final
Shane MacGowan didn't just love Tipperary hurling, he ended up as one of the faces of it. The chief Pogue was a great-grandson of John Lynch, a key Land League figure who attended the famous GAA Hayes Hotel meeting in 1884. Lynch was a founder member and first chairman of the club at the north-eastern corner of Lough Derg, Shannon Rovers, where the river is indeed at its most broad and majestic. A club which would, in turn, became MacGowan's obsessive sporting love, specifically asking for one of their jerseys for his funeral, and from which base he supported Tipperary inter-county hurling so passionately. It's a good guess that today Shannon Rovers, from a picturesque triangle of townlands, Kilbarron, Ballinderry and Terryglass, are the most famous hurling club in the world. And those who think they haven't heard of them, think again; they are the club referred to in MacGowan's classic track The Broad Majestic Shannon. For it's stupid to laugh and it's useless to brawl, 'bout a rusty tin can and an old hurley ball' and 'So I walked as the day was dawning, where small birds sang and the leaves were falling.' Mairead Tiernan, Owner of Paddy's Bar, Terryglass showing the Shannon Rovers Jersey , with Shane MacGowan Script For Shane's sister Siobhan and all of those associated with the club, the song is highly biographical. The Shannon Rovers shirt that features Shane, John Lynch and the song lyric remains sought after worldwide. This, be assured, was no marketing trick but the result of the coverage of the singer's funeral and his asking for the jersey to be placed on the coffin; it led to the club's telephone burning red with enquiries about how to buy one. 'At the time we just had the one set of jerseys for each team and now the senior side had one less so we had no idea what to say to these fans,' admits chairman Paul Tiernan. Siobhan MacGowan, author of the successful historical novels The Trial of Lotta Rae (Welbeck, 2022) and The Graces (Welbeck, 2023) was in no doubt about what to say: Aine Slattery, Seamus O'Sullivan, Siobhan Cleary, Sarah Burke, Helena Hayes, John Cahalan and Laura Leenane (Image: Picture Brendan Gleeson) 'Paul was a neighbour who had known us since we were children, he would have been in and out of the old house, and he approached me,' she says. 'It was a month after the funeral and they'd got a lot of inquiries about the jersey, people asking could they buy them so they were trying to be cautious 'But I said, 'Oh, Shane would absolutely love that — yeah, let's do it right, it would be one of his proudest moments.' There ought to be a design award for the end result: 'I thought it was brilliant, really well designed and very touching. 'You've got Shane there, and then you've got his words, the picture of our great grandfather which is hanging in the hurling field, the rusty tin and the old hurling ball on the back. It's gorgeous. 'The photo of Shane was taken by Andy Catlin and it was from, like, 30 years ago (taken in a hotel room in Porto) when he was around with The Pogues. 'I talked to Andy, who was a friend of mine, he was all too happy to give the go-ahead. 'Shane would have loved being alongside his great-grandfather John Lynch who was very nationalistic, part of the Gaelic Revival and quite a character, a real patriot.' Shane's relationship with Shannon Rovers, says Siobhan, was very simple: 'We were coming over here every summer from year dot so hurling was just part of what everybody was doing. 'It wasn't like coming over here as a teen or something and seeing it, more coming over at four, five years of age so it was just going on. He was a child, he'd be playing in the fields. 'But, as we saw, it was Tipperary and hurling, because it was the Irish national sport, for him. He was obsessed with that.' Tipperary Fans at Terryglass County Tipperary Shannon Rovers Supporters supporting Tipperary at Terryglass County Tipperary Picture Brendan Gleeson The Broad Majestic Shannon appeared on the If I Should Fall From Grace with God album considered, along with Rum, Sodomy & The Lash, to be The Pogues' most accomplished albums. But it was almost certainly an original for the album as Siobhan had not heard it beforehand. 'I can't remember when I first heard it but it was very simply all about this area and about our home. 'So the Carney Commons in Kilbarron is where our great grandfather, John Lynch, was from. He was there with our great grandmother, Margaret, and they had whatever, like 11, 12, 13 children, something like that. 'A lot of the grand aunts and uncles were in the house. Our granny was in the house with our mum who had two children, our dad and uncle Sean, who is my first cousin Lisa's (sitting beside us as we speak here) dad. 'So a lot of the song is about here. There is the gap in the wall, that's real, and they did call the rosary at just after six every night, and they did play cards, and there was a lot of music in the house and a lot of dancing. 'Shane is talking about that and about walking by the Shannon, which is right there, this is the Lough Derg area, so there's loads of surrounding scenery, surrounded by water.' 'I find it quite emotional because it's definitely about lots of old people in the family as well. Shane was very close to all those that I'm talking about, our great aunts and uncles. 'I actually live by the Shannon now and I practically say some of the song in my head every day, my walk as the day is dawning, small birds and things, I can actually see them.' Shannon Rovers are, in any case, a historic club. Two-time All Star goalkeeper Pat McLoughney (1979, 1980) is still a key member. Laura Leenane is the current Tipperary senior camogie goalkeeper — that was her making the critical save in Croke Park last Sunday week prior to Tipp's semi-final with Kilkenny. Siobhan MacGowan (Image: Picture Brendan Gleeson) Moreover, the excitement around the club this week has been palpable as the first team, captained by the chairman's son Matt, won the Intermediate Cup after beating local rival Borrisokane last Sunday in Cloughjordan. Says Siobhan and Shane's cousin Lisa: 'My son was goalkeeper on the team, so our great grandfather John Lynch, my father Sean Cahill and my son Vincent Mulvihill makes for a fourth generation having played for the club.' Meanwhile the focus is turning towards Shane's secondary hurling obsession, the Tipperary inter-county side and this weekend's All Ireland final. Siobhan recalls going to a Tipp match with Shane and their uncle Sean in Nenagh around 1981 in the early days of The Pogues and the late singer's passion for the Premier men never waned. 'Yes he went to hurling matches at any opportunity he could get. He was at the final when Tipperary last won in 2019 and he was at a number of their other All Ireland finals,' she says. And then suddenly, wonderfully, Siobhan bursts: 'I remember! I've a good story, we lost one year against Clare and we'd bought a Tipperary teddy bear, yellow on top and blue. 'And I was driving and we were going down O'Connell Street and a Clare car went by shouting and Shane got the teddy bear and leant out the car window screaming 'Raaaaah, Raaaah' roaring at them, it was absolutely mad. 'And then when they saw who it was, they were like 'Aaaaargh', we've just upset the wrong person and went very quiet! 'So, yeah, he used to get very, very irate and enthusiastic. 'He was a shouter at the telly to do with hurling and then, obviously, an even bigger shouter at his hurling matches.' Shane may be well be well represented at Croke Park. 'I know Victoria, Shane's wife, she desperately wanted to be there at Croke Park for Shane and we moved heaven and earth so she would have tickets for the game, that was important. 'I don't know but she may well be wearing one of the jerseys with Shane on it, the Shannon one, or the Tipp one that just has his image — now that would be something I think he would have absolutely loved, been so proud of.' Temple University Announces New Course about Kendrick Lamar & His Cultural Impact
Yara Sameh Temple University is planning a new course this fall focused on Kendrick Lamar and his cultural impact on the Black experience. Local outlet NBC10 in Philadelphia broke the news earlier this week, announcing the course is titled 'Kendrick Lamar and the Moral of M.A.A.D. City.' The course will be taught by Professor Timothy Welbeck, who teaches in the Department of Africology and African American Studies and is currently the Director of the Center for Anti-Racism. Welbeck has taught at Temple for 14 years and has often woven hip-hop and the Black experience into his courses. He previously taught about urban Black politics, 2Pac, and the intersection of rap with Black identity. Welbeck has been planning and prepping this Kendrick course for over a year and has previously used K-Dot's material in his other classes. 'My current department chair was very open to the idea and received it almost immediately,' Welbeck told NBC10. 'In a lot of ways, our department at Temple specifically, and Temple more broadly, has embraced the study of hip-hop in academic spaces.' He added, 'Kendrick Lamar is one of the defining voices of his generation, and in many ways, both his art and life is reflective of the Black experience in many telling ways,' Welbeck told the outlet. 'Being able to discuss his art in the environment that helps lead him into being the man that he is in a lot of ways can tell you him as an individual, but can also talk about the journey's towards self-actualization, particularly as it is related to the Black experience.' The course will more particularly focus on how K-Dot and hip-hop examine the evolution of Black expression in America. Welbeck said he hopes the course will help students see the power of hip-hop as a form of art and storytelling. Kendrick is not only the first Black artist to be a focal point at Temple University, previous course topics also highlighted Jay-Z and Beyoncé's accomplishments as well. read more New Tourism Route To Launch in Old Cairo Ahmed El Sakka-Led Play 'Sayidati Al Jamila' to Be Staged in KSA on Dec. 6 Mandy Moore Joins Season 2 of "Dr. Death" Anthology Series Don't Miss These Movies at 44th Cairo Int'l Film Festival Today Amr Diab to Headline KSA's MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2022 Festival Arts & Culture Mai Omar Stuns in Latest Instagram Photos Arts & Culture "The Flash" to End with Season 9 Arts & Culture Ministry of Culture Organizes four day Children's Film Festival Arts & Culture Canadian PM wishes Muslims Eid-al-Adha News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream Arts & Culture Hawass Foundation Launches 1st Course to Teach Ancient Egyptian Language

Rio Ferdinand names four players Man Utd should never have sold
Rio Ferdinand has slammed Manchester United's recruitment since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement and criticised the club for selling four players. United have suffered a huge and alarming fall from grace since Fergie walked away in 2013 and currently find themselves just 16th in the Premier League table. Poor performances on the pitch have been mirrored by questionable decisions off it, with billions worth of talent coming and going from Old Trafford. A number of incoming signings have failed to deliver but Ferdinand believes some questionable sales have been just as damaging to Manchester United. The ex-England defender was particularly disappointed by United's decision to sell strikers Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez and full-back siblings Rafael and Fabio da Silva. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Welbeck came through Manchester United's academy and was closing in on his 150th first-team appearance before being sold to Premier League rivals Arsenal in 2014. The former underwhelmed for Arsenal but has enjoyed arguably the best period of his career in his 30s and Ferdinand believes he would still be starting for his boyhood club United. Hernandez was a consistent performer during his five-year spell at Old Trafford and helped Fergie win two Premier League titles before the Mexico goalscorer was moved on in 2014. Brothers Rafael and Fabio da Silva were also sold shortly after Ferguson's retirement in decision that also left Ferdinand scratching his head. Discussing United's transfer strategy in recent years, Ferdinand said on his YouTube channel: 'There's players I would have kept. 'Danny Welbeck, Chicharito, Rafael de Silva, Fabio de Silva. Has anyone come into those positions and done better than what they would have done? 'There's no full-backs who have come in and done much better than Rafael or Fabio. More Trending 'When I heard we were letting Chicharito go, I thought, 'what am I hearing here?' When I heard him and Welbeck were going, I couldn't believe it. 'I was like, 'What? Why?' Those were great squad players but could have become starters when a few of the bigger and older players were leaving. 'The generation was changing and I could see a place for them at the club. 'You're letting Chicharito go when he's scoring mad amount of goals on a regular basis, Welbeck is impacting games with and without the ball. Look at Welbeck now, what United would do to have him in the team now.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Brighton boost European hopes with late win over Liverpool
Arne Slot's Reds were on course for success at the Amex Stadium following an eye-catching finish from Dominik Szoboszlai after Seagulls midfielder Yasin Ayari cancelled out Harvey Elliott's early opener. But Mohamed Salah – making his 300th Premier League appearance – missed an open goal to stretch the visitors' lead before Kaoru Mitoma equalised and fellow Albion substitute Hinshelwood pounced five minutes from time. Liverpool have now taken only a point from three games since clinching the title on April 27, while Fabian Hurzeler's hosts climbed to eighth – three points above Brentford – ahead of Sunday's season finale at Tottenham. Brighton's attempts to sneak into Europe became complex after bitter rivals Crystal Palace snatched a Europa League place with Saturday's shock FA Cup final win over Manchester City. Albion must remain in eighth position to stand any chance and then hope either Chelsea finish seventh and beat Real Betis in the Conference League final or Carabao Cup winners Newcastle drop out of the top six. Permutations have been of little concern to runaway leaders Liverpool since they were confirmed champions more than three weeks ago. The Reds, who left Trent Alexander-Arnold on the bench ahead of his summer exit, were given a guard of honour as they entered the pitch, which prompted boos from some home fans. Seagulls supporters were soon silenced as Liverpool capitalised on a bright start with a fine team goal. After Szoboszlai's diagonal pass was helped on by Salah, Conor Bradley burst into the box beyond Simon Adingra and pulled the ball back to leave Elliott with a simple finish. Brighton beat Liverpool in a thriller! The win keeps their European hopes alive 🔵⚪️#BHALIV — Premier League (@premierleague) May 19, 2025 Liverpool have scored in every away game of a league season for the first time following the ninth-minute breakthrough and threatened to double their lead when Bradley side-footed wide. Danny Welbeck should have levelled with a close-range header – amid suspicion of handball from Kostas Tsimikas – before the Reds were pegged back 13 minutes shy of half-time. Following neat build-up play involving Adam Webster and Welbeck, Brajan Gruda's pass split the visitors' backline and Ayari raced through to calmly roll the ball into the bottom left corner. Slot's side regained the lead in first-half added time. Brighton's defence switched off after conceding a free-kick and Szoboszlai exchanged short passes with Elliott before unleashing a dipping drive from wide on the right which deceived goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen and flew into the far corner. Liverpool keeper Alisson Becker saved well from Welbeck and Gruda early in the second period before Salah was guilty of a glaring miss. Cody Gakpo escaped down the left and delivered a low centre but, with the goal gaping, the division's 28-goal leading scorer somehow directed his finish wide of the right post from the edge of the six-yard box. Welbeck fired tamely straight at Alisson following a delightful lay-off from Gruda, while Salah was denied by Verbruggen at the other end as an entertaining encounter remained open. Brighton levelled for a second time in the 69th minute. Alisson kept out Welbeck's initial effort but Mitoma, who had been on the pitch for four minutes, followed up to hammer home the rebound. The Seagulls wanted a penalty when Mats Wieffer went down under a challenge from Tsimikas and looked set to suffer further frustration when Hinshelwood's close-range effort was initially chalked off. But replays showed Matt O'Riley was marginally onside before delivering the assist, prompting wild celebrations, which were replicated after the hosts held on during eight minutes of added time.

Liverpool player ratings as Federico Chiesa and four more poor in Brighton loss
Liverpool suffered their fourth Premier League defeat of the season after losing 3-2 at Brighton & Hove Albion on Monday night. In what was the final away game of the season for Arne Slot's champions, Harvey Elliott's goal was cancelled out by Yasin Ayari's equaliser before Dominik Szoboszlai struck late in the first period. Kaoru Mitoma made it 2-2 after arriving off the bench and it was left to Jack Hinshelwood to register the winner late on after a lengthy VAR check. Here's how the ECHO rated the players on the night. READ MORE: Brighton vs Liverpool LIVE - score, Szoboszlai and Elliott goals, commentary stream READ MORE: Federico Chiesa starts as key Liverpool players benched for Brighton Alisson Becker - 7 Couldn't do too much about Brighton's goals but made a stunning save to deny Welbeck's free kick in the second period before thwarting Gruda immediately after. Didn't deserve to be on the losing side. Conor Bradley - 7 Did brilliantly for the opening goal, skipping past two challenges before laying it on a plate for Elliott. The right-back was a constant threat with his surges down the flank. Tired as the game wore on though and Mitoma punished him. Ibrahima Konate - 6 Seemed to enjoy being the senior centre-back alongside Quansah, always dishing out the instructions to his colleague. Jarell Quansah - 6 Steady enough from the defender on what is only his third Premier League start of the season. Always confident in possession and has been keen to get tough-tight on Welbeck. Unfortunate for the winning goal. Kostas Tsimikas - 6 Did well to deny Welbeck a free header for what should have been an equaliser. Was unable to add much going forward. Ryan Gravenberch - 6 Neat and tidy, as ever, and showed the odd flash of quality to evade his pursuers. Could perhaps progress the ball further up the pitch at times though. Dominik Szoboszlai - 7 Seemed to revel in the deeper midfield role. Was a bundle of activity and energy throughout. Scored a stunning goal to give Liverpool the lead at half time. Harvey Elliott - 7 Took his chance as the most advanced of the three midfielders, on target with his first Premier League goal of the season on only his second start. Was keen to occupy the spaces between the Brighton defence and midfield. Mohamed Salah - 5 A subdued outing from the Egyptian and missed a gilt-edged chance in the second half from Gakpo's pass across the six-yard box. Verbruggen's reaction stop denied him a goal later on. Cody Gakpo - 6 Was quiet out on the left flank and was unable to properly impact the game as he has done so often this season. Powerful surge in the second half deserved the finishing touch from Salah. Federico Chiesa - 4 Struggled to get into things on his first Premier League start. Too often muscled out of things by Brighton's more powerful defenders. He will feel this chance passed him by. SUBS: Curtis Jones - 6 Did well when he came on and was involved throughout his second-half cameo. Did well to slow down a rampaging Mitoma late on. Luis Diaz - 5 Was constantly threatening to create something off the left but found too many bodies in his way whenever promising situations developed. Darwin Nunez - 4 Found it difficult to get into the game playing on the last shoulder of the Brighton defence. No real chances came his way. Wataru Endo - 5 Brought on to keep Japan international colleague Mitoma quiet at right-back but found it tough against the brilliant Brighton winger.
