Wenceel Perez, Zach McKinstry solo homers lead Tigers over Guardians
July 5 - Wenceel Perez and Zach McKinstry hit solo home runs and four Detroit pitchers combined for a nine-hitter, lifting the visiting Tigers to a 2-1 victory over the free-falling Cleveland Guardians on Friday night. Perez went deep in the third inning and McKinstry cleared the fence in the fourth, both off Guardians starter Slade Cecconi (3-4), as the American League-leading Tigers won the opener of their three-game weekend series. All-Star third baseman Jose Ramirez homered in the first for defending AL Central champion Cleveland, which lost its eighth straight and is 1-9 since June 23. The Guardians matched their longest skid since 2021. Tyler Holton (4-3) earned the win with 2 2/3 scoreless innings of one-hit relief and Will Vest pitched the final four outs for his 14th save in 17 opportunities. Ramirez homered in the first to put Cleveland ahead 1-0, snapping an 0-for-21 streak that equaled the longest of his career. The drought began on June 26, when he was hit on the right arm by a pitch from Toronto's Kevin Gausman. Cecconi threw a career-high 105 pitches over six innings, giving up two runs on six hits. The right-hander struck out five and walked two in front of the largest crowd in Cleveland this season, an advance sellout of 38,213. Tigers starter Reese Olson worked 4 1/3 innings, allowing one run on six hits after being activated from the injured list earlier in the day. The righty struck out three and walked one in his first appearance since May 17, when his right ring finger became inflamed. Guardians center fielder Lane Thomas exited the game in the sixth with mild plantar fasciitis on his right foot. If Thomas is placed on the IL, it likely will result in top prospect Chase DeLauter being recalled from Triple-A Columbus to make his major-league debut. Ramirez went 2-for-4 and scored his 942nd career run, moving into a tie for fourth in franchise history with Charlie Jamieson. --Field Level Media

AJ Hinch Sounds Off on 'Very Underrated' Tigers Player Ahead of Thursday Game vs. Athletics
AJ Hinch Sounds Off on 'Very Underrated' Tigers Player Ahead of Thursday Game vs. Athletics originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Detroit Tigers have won 17 of the 25 series they've played this season and appear headed for a possible AL Central Division Title and second consecutive playoff appearance under manager AJ Hinch. Advertisement The Tigers' success this season has taken an army of both position players and pitchers contributing to what has become one of the best first halves to a season in franchise history. Lost in the hoopla surrounding how many All-Stars the Tigers will have this season has been the performance of outfielder Wenceel Perez, whom Hinch paid tribute to in a wide ranging interview with a local Detroit radio station. Wenceel Perez dives into home plate on June 24, 2025 against the Athletics. © Rick Osentoski-Imagn Images "...He is pretty understated and very underrated," Hinch said according to 97.1 The Ticket of the Tigers' 25-year-old rising star. "No. 1, he's playing a position that he never played until the upper levels of the minors. And he looks like someone who has played outfield his whole life, which is a great job of development by our (player development) people and our outfield coaches here in the big leagues," Hinch added. Advertisement Perez is hitting .304 this season with six home runs and three doubles heading into Thursday's matinee against the Athletics at Comerica Park. Hinch described his value to the Tigers' lineup. "The other part is, he's been an instrumental part of the lineup construction that I've put out there because we really believe in the bat. "He can move the ball forward, he puts the ball in play, he is a switch-hitter who's predominantly been better left-handed, he's done some work on his right-handed swing and we're seeing better production," Hinch added. Wenceel Pérez does it all for Detroit Tigers, including two outfield assists in one inning
Two outfield assists in one inning? Detroit Tigers outfielder Wenceel Pérez — a longtime infielder who only began playing the outfield in spring training 2024 —pulled it off in the seventh inning Tuesday, June 24, during an 11-4 win over the Athletics at Comerica Park. Advertisement "I don't think I've seen two outfield assists at second base by the same outfielder — ever," said Tigers left-hander Tarik Skubal, who watched Pérez's throws from the dugout after completing his six-inning performance. It was a first for Pérez in his two-year MLB career. Before Tuesday's game, Pérez had recorded just one assist in 1,020⅔ innings as an outfielder. THE GAME: Tarik Skubal gives up early homers, but Tigers back him up in 11-4 win vs Athletics Detroit Tigers outfielder Wenceel Perez (46) hits a double in the third inning against the Athletics at Comerica Park in Detroit on Tuesday, June 24, 2025. Not only did Pérez have two assists on defense, but he also delivered an important two-run double off Athletics right-hander Luis Severino as part of a five-run third inning. Advertisement He finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs. The 25-year-old switch-hitter has a .307 batting average and a 1.007 OPS in 23 this season, all since May 27 when he returned from the injured list. He missed the first two months of the season with a lower back injury. "Wenceel, on both sides of the ball, was a huge contributor to this win," manager A.J. Hinch said. "He had a big smile after the game — as he should. For as much as other guys get talked about, he has quietly been an instrumental part of our season once we got him back from injury." At the plate, Pérez is hitting .268 with an .857 OPS against right-handed pitchers (as a left-handed hitter) and .421 with a 1.053 OPS against left-handed pitchers (as a right-handed hitter). Last year, he hit .251 vs. righties and .209 vs. lefties. Advertisement He appears more comfortable as a switch-hitter in 2025, just like he feels more comfortable roaming the outfield — whether it's his primary position in right field or his secondary positions in center or left field. "I feel way better than last year," Pérez said, an outfielder for exactly 480 days. "You have to keep working on it and get a lot of reps. When your head is moving, you have to figure out timing." The improvement is real. "I see him slowing the game down and maintaining his rhythm and his timing and his fundamental," Hinch said. "He's really growing into understanding his timing. He's not slow, but he's slowing the game down, and that's encouraging." In the seventh inning, Pérez showcased his development on display with a pair of outfield assists — both on one-hop throws to second base. On the first, he fielded a ball off the wall after it landed on the warning track and fired a one-hopper to nab Tyler Soderstrom sliding headfirst into the bag. On the second, he ranged near foul territory, spun and delivered another one-hopper to get Jacob Wilson sliding feet first. Shortstop Javier Báez was on the receiving end of both throws. Advertisement Pérez tipped his cap to Báez. "He's the best out there at tagging players," Pérez said. "I don't know how he does it, but I think he's the best at tagging guys at second base." In Tuesday's game, Pérez drove in two runs in the third inning, recorded two outfield assists in the seventh and scored a run in the eighth — then capped it all off in the ninth. He made a sliding catch in right field for the final out, securing an 11-4 win as the Tigers became the first MLB team to reach 50 victories in the 2025 season. On this night, they might not have done it without him. "When I came up with him in the minor leagues, he was a shortstop with a really good arm," Skubal said. "You put him in the outfield, and he can roam free and let that arm go. I don't know outs above average or defensive runs saved, but it feels like he accumulated a pretty good amount of WAR today." Tigers pull away in 6-run 9th, avoid sweep by Rays
June 22 - Wenceel Perez belted a two-run homer and drove in three runs and Parker Meadows hit a three-run blast Sunday to give the Detroit Tigers a 9-3 victory over the host Tampa Bay Rays. Spencer Torkelson and Riley Greene each scored twice for the Tigers, who avoided losing more than three consecutive games for the first time since dropping five straight July 28-Aug. 2, 2024. Tigers starter Casey Mize left the game with an apparent injury after giving up a leadoff single in the sixth inning. Mize allowed six hits and one run and struck out five. Tyler Holton (3-3) and four other Detroit relievers combined to hold Tampa Bay to three hits over the final four innings. Dillon Dingler gave Detroit a 1-0 lead in the second when his single to right field scored Greene. Tampa Bay's Junior Caminero tied the game in the fourth with his 379-foot homer to left field. It was his team-leading 19th blast of the season, the most by a Rays player before the All-Star break since Brandon Lowe hit 21 in 2021. In the seventh, Perez snapped a 1-1 tie with his sixth home run of the year to center field, scoring Torkelson from first base. Before an 18-minute rain delay in Detroit's six-run ninth, Greene scored off a double by Torkelson, who later came home on a single by Perez. Meadows followed with his homer that scored Perez and Dingler. After the delay, Javier Baez came home on a sacrifice fly by Zach McKinstry. The Rays loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth and scored a pair on a single by Taylor Walls. Rays starter Zach Littell struck out five and allowed one run on four hits over five innings. Reliever Garrett Cleavinger (0-3) struck out three but gave up the homer to Perez. Forrest Whitley replaced Eric Orze at the start of the ninth and allowed six runs without recording an out. --Field Level Media
