Braves, without injured Ronald Acuna Jr., seek series win over Royals
(Photo credit: Peter Aiken-Imagn Images) A disappointing season continues to get bleaker for the Atlanta Braves. As All-Star Ronald Acuna Jr. heads to the injured list, the Braves must try to rebound from their latest defeat. They will visit the Kansas City Royals, who finally have some consistent offense, in the rubber game of a three-game series on Wednesday afternoon. With fellow star Marcell Ozuna the subject of persistent trade rumors leading up to the Thursday trade deadline, the Braves sit 16 games under .500 and have lost eight of their past 10 games. Their season got even worse when Acuna left in the sixth inning Tuesday of a 9-6 loss because of Achilles tightness. Braves manager Brian Snitker announced after the game that Acuna, who homered Monday during a 10-7 win over the Royals and is batting .306, will go on the 10-day IL. Acuna said he hurt himself scoring from first base on Monday but felt well enough to start Tuesday. 'It's an injury. I'm worried,' Acuna said through an interpreter. 'They are going to examine me (Wednesday), and we'll see how it goes.' Ozuna, meanwhile, has two home runs and five RBIs in the series, but it's uncertain if he still will be wearing a Braves uniform at the end of the week. Despite their current state, the Braves can still win their first series since July 11-13. Claimed off waivers on July 11 after being designated for assignment by the Minnesota Twins, left-hander Joey Wentz (2-2, 5.76 ERA) will make his third start for the Braves, who are plagued by a depleted rotation. On his fourth team since debuting in 2022, Wentz threw four scoreless innings in his first Atlanta start July 19, pitching in his team's 12-9 loss to the New York Yankees. Then on Friday at Texas, he yielded four runs (three earned) and four hits over 4 1/3 innings in an 8-3 setback. Wentz has faced the Royals six times (two starts) in his career and has a 1-0 record and 4.86 ERA. Kansas City star Bobby Witt Jr is 0-for-7 against Wentz. However, Witt had two RBI singles Tuesday and is batting .303 during an eight-game hitting streak. Kansas City sits two games under .500 and still ranks in the bottom half of the majors in runs (392), batting (.245), slugging percentage (.384), on-base percentage (.301) and home runs (92), but the team has 16 homers and has averaged 6.2 runs during a current 6-3 stretch. On Tuesday, Kyle Isbel's three-run double highlighted a five-run sixth inning and Vinnie Pasquantino homered for one of his three hits. 'We're just competing every single pitch. The energy is there every single night,' Isbel told FanDuel Sports Network. 'We're just giving our all every day.' Pasquantino has three home runs and eight RBIs in his past six games. The Royals, also dealing with injuries to their rotation, appear slated for a bullpen game Wednesday. They will start reliever Angel Zerpa (3-1, 4.15 ERA), who pitched one scoreless inning against the New York Mets on July 12. He has made 44 relief appearances for the season. Right-hander Thomas Hatch, called up from Triple-A Omaha after Kansas City designated 45-year-old Rich Hill for assignment Tuesday, could make his first major league appearance since 2023 in the series finale. He has a 4-4 career record and a 4.96 ERA in 39 games (six starts) with the Toronto Blue Jays and Pittsburgh Pirates.

Atlanta Braves at Texas Rangers odds, picks and predictions
The Atlanta Braves (44-57) and the Texas Rangers (53-50) open a 3-game interleague series Friday at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. First pitch is scheduled for 8:05 p.m. ET (MLB Network). Let's analyze BetMGM Sportsbook's MLB odds around the Braves vs. Rangers odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets. Season series: First meeting; Braves won 2-1 in 2024 The Braves opened a series at home with the San Francisco Giants Monday with a 9-5 win, but Atlanta was outscored 18-3 in a pair of losses Tuesday and Wednesday. The Braves are just 1-4 in the past 5 games, with the Over going 7-1-1 in the past 9 outings. In Wednesday's 9-3 loss to the Giants, OF Jurickson Profar was 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored, while DH Drake Baldwin had a double in 5 at-bats with 2 RBIs. The Rangers swept the Athletics in Arlington Monday through Wednesday, outscoring the A's 15-5 as the Over cashed in 2 of the 3 wins. Texas is 6-1 in the past 7 games, while the Under is 5-2 in that span. On Wednesday, Texas won 2-1 against the A's, and SS Corey Seager was the hitting hero, going 2-for-4 with a double, solo home run and an RBI, while C Jonah Heim was 1-for-3 with a double and an RHP Nathan Eovaldi was scratched from his last start Sunday due to a stiff back. He is scheduled to start Friday for the first time since July 13. Braves at Rangers projected starters LHP Joey Wentz vs. RHP Nathan Eovaldi Wentz (2-1, 5.71 ERA) makes his second start and 28th appearance with Braves, Minnesota Twins and Pittsburgh Pirates. He has a 1.61 WHIP, 4.8 BB/9 and 7.9 K/9 through 41 innings. Eovaldi (7-3, 1.58 ERA) makes his 17th start. He has a 0.85 WHIP, 1.4 BB/9 and 9.3 K/9 through 91 innings. Braves at Rangers odds Provided by BetMGM Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated at 6:46 a.m. ET. Braves at Rangers picks and predictions Rangers 6, Braves 2 Moneyline The RANGERS (-175) aren't priced out of line if you want to take them straight up. The price is a little high, but not over my personal limit of -180 for a standalone moneyline wager. It's actually a bit surprising, given how poorly the Braves have played lately, that this number isn't -200 or higher. Take advantage. Run line/Against the spread The RANGERS -1.5 (+130) are worth a look laying the run and a half, as Eovaldi isn't likely to cough up much to the skidding Braves, while Texas should be able to get to Wentz early. Texas is 6-1 in the past 7 games since July 13, and it has won 5 of those games by 2 or more runs. Back the Rangers on the run line, and feel confident in doing so. Over/Under AVOID. I expect the total (8) to come right down on the number. The Under is 5-2 in the past 7 games for the Rangers, with the pitching staff allowing 2 or fewer runs in each of the outings. So, if there was a lean, it would be to go low. Play our free daily Pick'em Challenge and win! Play now! For more sports betting picks and tips, check out and BetFTW. Golden Tate Reflects on Carson Wentz
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Getting traded midway through an NFL season is tough to deal with for most players in any situation. For the former veteran wide receiver, Golden Tate, he entered an awkward situation with the Philadelphia Eagles back in 2018. During the pre-Jalen Hurts era of Eagles football, the Doug Pederson-led Eagles found themselves in a tricky situation. Despite watching their young franchise quarterback turn in an MVP-caliber season before going down with a knee injury, the Eagles saw Carson Wentz's backup, Nick Foles, lead the team on a shocking Super Bowl run. Foles was crowned the Super Bowl Champion in 2018, which led many to question whether Wentz was truly fit to be the face of the franchise. As injuries and pressure continued to pile up for Wentz during the post-Super Bowl season, Golden Tate witnessed a young quarterback cracking under pressure. Recently, the retired wideout recalled his short stint with the Eagles on an episode of 'Bussin' With the Boys.' "He was a young guy. Obviously, being drafted in the first round and the city of Philadelphia, is hard, man. Everybody knows their sports, and everyone has an opinion. They are not afraid to boo you. You could have 11 straight good games, and one bad game, and you're getting booed," Tate said. "Dealing with that as a young man is already enough. And you're the quarterback. You're the face of the franchise, and then this happens. Nick comes in and takes you the rest of the way. I know, like, on camera, I'm super happy for the guy. But deep down, you're thinking, 'Man, is this the beginning of the end? How do they view me? Do they even think I was a huge part of the Super Bowl run?' You just got all these thoughts that pop into your head." When Tate joined the Eagles after a midseason trade between Philadelphia and the Detroit Lions, he was quickly embraced by Wentz, who was still healthy enough to play. The QB-WR duo had a few games together before Wentz was back on the injury report, leaving Tate to catch passes from Foles. PhotoBetween Tate and Wentz, there doesn't seem to be any bad blood. After all, Tate noted that he was a part of Wentz's small circle while in Philadelphia. As for the rest of the team? The veteran wideout noted that Wentz wasn't as open to maintaining a solid relationship with everybody. "It felt like with Carson, he had his four to five to six guys that he liked and he hung with, and that was all that mattered," Tate explained. "Everyone else it felt like, 'Bro, do you want to hang out with me? Do you want to have a relationship? Do you want to have lunch, dinner? Can we do something together?' That's kind of just the feel. I wasn't there long enough, nor did I want to even step into all that and deal with all of that. This is enough." Wentz's shortcomings as a player and a teammate were well-documented during his time in Philadelphia. While he didn't lose his job to Foles after the 2018 season, the eventual arrival of Jalen Hurts gave the Eagles confidence to move on from Wentz after the 2020 NFL season.

Former Chiefs Quarterback Shares Awesome Update With Fans
With just over two months to go before the start of training camps across the NFL, Carson Wentz is still a man without a team. He was a backup quarterback last season behind Patrick Mahomes on the Kansas City Chiefs, but his experience over the years may allow him to get picked up by a squad before it is too late. Advertisement In the meantime, he seems to be enjoying himself. In a post on his official Instagram account, he mentioned that he spoke at two Christian conferences with linebacker Drue Tranquill, a teammate of his last season, in his native North Dakota. "Another fun trip back to North Dakota!" Wentz wrote. "Was honored to speak alongside good friend @druetranquill at @goevangel's Men's Conference followed by our annual @ao1foundation event in Bismarck. It's always fun getting to interact with the kids we are serving through the AO1 Foundation!" Not too long ago, Wentz was one of the NFL's brightest young quarterbacks. Advertisement The Philadelphia Eagles took him with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 draft, and the following year, he threw for 3,296 yards and 33 touchdowns in 13 games and made the Pro Bowl as he helped the Eagles establish themselves as a legitimate championship contender. Unfortunately for him, he suffered a torn ACL in Week 14, which ended his season. He had to sit and watch as backup Nick Foles stepped into the QB1 spot and led the Eagles to the Super Bowl championship. Sergio Estrada-USA TODAY Sports Wentz suffered additional injuries over the next few years, which robbed him of much of his ability. By the 2023 campaign, he had been reduced to being a backup. Advertisement It looked like he would pick up a championship ring last year with Kansas City, but the team got blown out in Super Bowl LIV. Ironically, it lost there to the Eagles, Wentz's former employer. Related: Baker Mayfield's Wife Had No Words After Buccaneers QB's Announcement

Pittsburgh Steelers' QB dilemma: Could Carson Wentz be the surprising fix they need?
Steelers consider Carson Wentz as low-cost solution to QB uncertainty (Image via: Getty Images) The Pittsburgh Steelers are currently stuck in a perplexing quarterback predicament, and the 2025 NFL season might just make or break their future. With no clear successor to Ben Roethlisberger's legacy in sight, the Steelers are forced to entertain a series of options, none of which bring certainty. While Will Howard was selected in the 6th round of the 2025 NFL Draft, it's clear he isn't ready to take the reins just yet. Operation Sindoor India-Pakistan Tensions Live Updates: India hits back after Pakistan violates ceasefire; Nagrota sentry hurt in brief gunfire Operation Sindoor Live Updates: Drones shot down at multiple places in J&K as Pakistan violates bilateral understanding Pak drones enter Indian airspace, explosions heard just hours after truce deal All eyes now are on veteran quarterbacks who could provide stability, with Aaron Rodgers at the center of discussions. The reality of Carson Wentz in Pittsburgh How Carson Wentz Destroyed His Career... Though many in the football world have moved on from Carson Wentz, the Steelers could be the team to bring the former Pro Bowler back into the fold, albeit not in a starting role. Aaron Rodgers' decision looms large over Pittsburgh's quarterback situation, and should the 41-year-old choose to retire, general manager Omar Khan and head coach Mike Tomlin may have no choice but to pivot towards Wentz. While Wentz's glory days in the NFL are clearly behind him, his experience is undeniable. After starting 95 games in his career, including multiple playoff appearances, the 6-foot-5 signal-caller offers an invaluable wealth of knowledge. His career numbers, 153 touchdowns against 67 interceptions reflect a solid resume that, while no longer elite, can still be effective in certain situations. Steelers eye Carson Wentz as affordable veteran backup amid QB uncertainty Most recently, Wentz's role with the Kansas City Chiefs saw him serve as a backup to Patrick Mahomes. He hasn't started a game in nearly three seasons, but the 2024 campaign saw him step into a reserve role with limited play. While this reduced action has led many to question his readiness to start, Wentz could bring stability to Pittsburgh's quarterback room, especially if Rodgers chooses to decline the Steelers' offer. Moreover, Wentz wouldn't break the bank for the Steelers. As a veteran with a less-than-stellar recent performance record, Spotrac estimates that Wentz could sign a one-year deal worth just $1.9 million, a bargain for a player with his pedigree. However, Wentz isn't going to save the Steelers' quarterback position. He's not the long-term answer, and his days as a franchise QB are in the rearview mirror. But, if the Steelers need a reliable backup with experience who can step up in a pinch, Wentz might be their best option for the 2025 season. Also Read: Bengals want Stephon Gilmore but is experience enough to fix a broken defense? In conclusion, the Pittsburgh Steelers are once again at a crossroads. They can continue to gamble on untested players or settle for an aging veteran like Wentz to bridge the gap until a true solution emerges. Unless something drastic changes, the Steelers are in for a bumpy ride at quarterback.
