49ers key Day 3 draft pick shines in first training camp practice with pads on

As the San Francisco 49ers aim to re-open their Super Bowl window, one major key for them will be finding high quality talent late in the NFL draft. One of their Day 3 picks from this year's draft, defensive tackle CJ West, didn't need long to make his mark on his new defense. The 49ers put pads on for the first time this offseason at Monday's practice and West was one of the big winners of the day. ESPN's Nick Wagoner described on Twitter why West shined in the first padded session: There was one obvious standout today: rookie DT C.J. West. I had West winning cleanly and (mostly) decisively in all five of his reps. He did it against a different bunch of OL including Matt Hennessy, Zack Johnson, Drew Moss and Connor Colby. Lest anyone think he only succeeded against backups, West's best rep might have been against Dominick Puni. West's strong hands knocked Puni back quickly and he then transitioned to a quick rip move with his hands to blow past for the win. It's way too early but West looks like a good candidate to be a third-down rusher inside next to Mykel Williams. Defensive coordinator Robert Saleh hadn't gotten to evaluate the session before he spoke with reporters, but he noted some of the characteristics that flashed as part of West's strong outing. 'Yeah. I mean, he's like a little fire hydrant, right?" Saleh said. "But, he's powerful. He's got heavy hands. He's going to be fine. He's like a lot of rookies, there are so many things that they're learning, especially on the interior of the D-Line where it's a game within a game. You know, the first thing they learn is pocket push and then they learn how to capture an edge and rush from there. I wasn't there. I heard he did a really nice job over there, but I'm excited to get to the tape to see it.' The 49ers also drafted defensive tackle Alfred Collins in the second round, but he's a much bigger, different style of player than West. At Indiana West was a force as a run stuffer and flashed some upside as a pass rusher. He continued flashing that upside in his first NFL practice in pads. Now he'll need to translate it to team reps, joint practices and preseason games if he's going to make a push for a starting role in his rookie year. If he does wind up starting and making an impact out of the gate, it would be a much-needed early win for the 49ers with the 2025 NFL draft article originally appeared on Niners Wire: 49ers rookies: DT CJ West shines in 1st padded training camp practice

49ers NFL draft rewind: San Francisco bolsters DL with CJ West

San Francisco training camp is in full swing and it's starting to get good. Monday was the 49ers' first padded practice and one of the surprise standouts was fourth-round draft pick CJ West, a defensive tackle out of Indiana. The 6-foot-1, 316-pound defensive tackle impressed in reps against Dominick Puni, Matt Hennessy, Zack Johnson, Drew Moss and Connor Colby on Monday. West began his collegiate career at Kent State, but he finished up as part of the Hoosiers' magical 2024 college football season. West earned honorable mention All-Big Ten status at Indiana as he racked up 42 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, one pass breakup in 13 games and 10 starts during the 2024 campaign. With West starting to generate some headlines, let's examine what West brings to the table in San Francisco and also what the 49ers have said about him thus far. San Francisco 49ers DT CJ West Stats: 150 tackles, 27 tackles for loss, 9 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries, 2 passes defensed in 52 games What the 49ers said after drafting CJ West 49ers general manager John Lynch shared why San Francisco scooped West up with the 113th overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft. "Adding another guy to the mix in CJ. We had some departures this offseason, and we felt it was important to restock, and not just with guys, we wanted to put guys that fit our vision for what we want that room to be. CJ, I think, if we're talking about him, is stout, sturdy, but also has the quickness and strength to play in the other team's backfield. Makes a lot of splash plays in the other team's backfield. "I had the chance to watch him live this year when we went back to Ohio State, Indiana was there, made an impression in that game. But more so his film, his body of work has really stood out, and we just felt was a really good fit. Another add to the D-line we're building," Lynch said. CJ West comments on joining the 49ers After West learned his draft fate, he was asked if he envisioned himself as a nose tackle or a three-technique. "I'm multiple. I can do it everywhere. But my bread and butter is at the one-technique. That's where I just abuse centers, punch them in the face, be as violent as possible, just creating havoc down there in the middle," West said. The Hoosier product also shared which NFL defensive tackles he's modeled his game after. "Actually, he used to play for the 49ers. Akiem Hicks is one of the guys that I watched a ton growing up, he played for the Bears as well. His violence at the one-tech, the things he used to do, just taking on blocks. And I watched a lot of Maliek Collins as well, he just departed from the 49ers not too long ago. "He kind of, see his pass-rush game, he had a nasty spin move that he used to do. And just kind of mimic those things and work on that as this draft process has been going on. And I also watch a lot of Grady Jarrett. Of course, Aaron Donald, everybody watches Aaron Donald, one of the greatest of all time. But yeah, I watch a lot of players," West said. West revisited his interactions with defensive coordinator Robert Saleh and defensive line coach Kris Kocurek throughout the draft process. "Oh, it was great. They're coaches that really know what they're doing and they also have passion for the game. You could just see it in the way they talk. When I was on the phone with them, you just see it in the way they talk, the way they coach. "And that's the type of coaching style that I love. That's the type of coaching I want to be in. And that's the program and culture that I want to be in as well. So, I'm excited to get to work. I can't wait," West said. 49ers training camp update After the 49ers' first padded practice, Saleh commented on his early impressions of West. "Yeah. I mean, he's like a little fire hydrant, right? But, he's powerful. He's got heavy hands. He's going to be fine. He's like a lot of rookies, there are so many things that they're learning, especially on the interior of the D-Line where it's a game within a game. I heard he did a really nice job over there, but I'm excited to get to the tape to see it," Saleh article originally appeared on Niners Wire: 49ers NFL draft rewind: San Francisco bolsters DL with CJ West

Oil Holds Large Gain as Trump Amps Up Truce Pressure on Russia

Oil held the biggest gain in six weeks after US President Donald Trump reiterated he may impose additional economic penalties on Russia unless a truce is reached with Ukraine. West Texas Intermediate traded near $69 a barrel after closing 3.8% higher in the previous session. Brent settled above $72. Trump warned of 'tariffs and stuff' if a ceasefire isn't agreed in 10 days and said he wasn't concerned about the impact on the market, suggesting the US could ramp up production.

Vast majority of sanctions against Russia haven't worked

The overwhelming majority of Western sanctions imposed on Moscow have not worked and some continue to be ignored outright, economist Dmitry Nekrasov told the newspaper Le Monde in an interview published on Tuesday. Nekrasov, who served as an advisor to former President Dmitry Medvedev, left Russia in 2014, and was designated a foreign agent this year. Earlier this month, the EU imposed its 18th package of sanctions on Russia, hailing it as 'one of the strongest ever.' Moscow, which has long branded the restrictive measures as illegal, has said that the Russian economy has adapted and strengthened despite facing more than 30,000 sanctions over the past few years. Some 2,000 of the measures 'caused various inconveniences and costs,' Nekrasov told Le Monde. 'When we talk about the overall impact of the sanctions on the Russian economy... only a few have had a serious effect.' The so-called oil 'price cap' is one of the 'measures that has never worked,' the economist said. I don't know of any example where anyone actually respected it. Tanker captains used to forge documents to claim their cargoes were priced below the 'price cap,' and 'then they stopped doing even that,' Nekrasov said. According to the economist, 80% of vessels in what the EU calls the 'shadow fleet' are openly transporting Russian oil. In three years of the sanctions list being extended, only 2% of the targeted vessels have stopped carrying Russian crude. Most of them continue to function as if nothing had happened. Despite Moscow facing $5-7 billion more in annual logistics costs now that it exports 35-40% of its crude to India rather than selling refined fuel to the EU, the bloc faces similar increased costs buying petroleum products from New Delhi, he added. Moscow has expanded its trade with BRICS partners India, China, Brazil and other nations since the West imposed sweeping sanctions on Russia following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022. More than 90% of trade among BRICS members is now carried out in national currencies, Russian President Vladimir Putin said last month.

Belfast man accused of drugging, raping, and assaulting woman at his home

Anthony West's defence lawyer told the court the 38-year-old 'strenuously denies' the offences A Belfast man appeared in court today accused of drugging, raping and assaulting a woman who he allegedly held against her will. Appearing in the dock of the city's Magistrates Court, 38-year-old Anthony West confirmed he understood the six charges against him, alleged to have been committed against a single victim between 24 - 27 July the year. West, from Henderson Avenue in the north of the city, faces charges of rape, non-fatal strangulation, false imprisonment, criminal damage, causing actual bodily harm and administering a noxious substance 'with the intention of stupefying or overpowering her so as to enable a person to engage in sexual activity involving her.' Giving evidence to the court, a detective said he believed he could connect West to each of the offences, adding that police were objecting to bail due to concerns of further offending and witness interference. He told the court it was after 10pm on Sunday when the complainant rang police to report that 'she had been held against her will for four days by the defendant.' Anthony West News in 90 Seconds - Tuesday, July 29 She further reported that during that time, 'she had been drugged and beaten and raped.' According to the alleged victim, she had initially gone to West's flat willingly on 22 July and during the first couple of days, the pair had had been drinking together. The court heard however that by the third day, West allegedly 'started to verbally abuse her, he hid her phone and he assaulted her.' When West had gone to the bathroom the woman tried to escape, but West 'grabbed her by the ankles, dragged her back and threw her on the bed' where he allegedly 'hit her several times,' said the officer. On Saturday, 'she tried to get away and the defendant grabbed her again, dragged her back and coerced her into smoking what she believed was crack cocaine,' he told the court. A short time later, West apparently told her 'I just want to f*** you' and while she acquiesced to having sex, the detective told the court that was in circumstances where 'it was only to appease him and because of the drugs she had taken.' At one point during her ordeal, West allegedly 'grabbed her by the windpipe,' ripped her clothing, 'demanded that she remain naked,' demanded that she perform a sex act on him and flushed her phone down the toilet. After that, 'she managed to leave the property' and alert the police. When West was arrested, he initially claimed that 'she had struck him and held a knife to his throat' but during formal police interviews, he gave 'no comment' responses to officers' questions. West's defence lawyer told the court the 38-year-old 'strenuously denies' the offences and submitted that he could be granted bail, subject to conditions. District Judge Steven Keown disagreed however, and refusing bail, he remanded West into custody with the case adjourned to 6 August.
