The accidental golfer from Estonia making Open history
Richard Teder only started playing golf by chance after his auntie won some vouchers in a tennis competition. That was 14 years ago. And now, at the age of 20, he's making Open Championship history by becoming the first Estonian to play the sport's oldest amateur qualified in some style too, with a 70-yard chip-in to win a play-off in final qualifying at West Lancashire. "I've never lost in a play-off so I knew I was pretty safe," Teder laughed in the immediate shot - his second on a par-four hole - was an instant hit on social media and Teder himself can't stop watching it."I've watched it a million times," he told BBC Sport. "I watched it today. I just couldn't believe it went in." Final qualifying was held on 1 July so Teder has had a couple of weeks to get used to the fact he is teeing it up alongside 155 other players at Royal will tee off on Thursday at 10:42 BST alongside American Ryggs Johnston and Germany's Matthias Schmid."Being here is unbelievable – it's my favourite major by far, it's just awesome. It's the biggest tournament on the planet," he said."It's such an honour being the first Estonian be here and it will be loads of fun."There are only seven courses and around 4,000 players in Estonia and if his auntie hadn't won a tennis tournament when he was aged six, Teder accepts he would not be here this week."The prize was 10 vouchers," he said. "So it was completely random."By the age of 14 he was playing off scratch but said he only started gaining distance with his shots when he had a growth spurt at the age of he is undaunted by the prospect of the links golf challenge ahead, having grown up playing junior tournaments in Scotland and competed in three Amateur Championships at the seaside tracks of Royal St George's in Kent, Ballyliffin in Ireland and Hillside on the Southport coast."I'm trying to prove to myself that I belong here, which I believe I do," he said. "It's the six inches between the ears. I'm trying to gain experience and hopefully turn pro after this season."He narrowly missed out via the new global pathway last year but is chasing a spot on the DP World Tour's underling, the HotelPlanner Tour.A good showing this week will help that ambition as he soaks in the atmosphere on the Northern Irish there is one thing the man who learned English by "watching YouTube videos and stuff I picked up on social media" will be avoiding."I'm not having a kebab this week," he said referring to his celebratory meal after qualifying at West Lancashire."It was the only place that was open, I had two bites and threw it away, it wasn't very good."

Colne edge win as Wiggin strikes in friendly clash
Colne won their third friendly on a hot Saturday against West Lancashire League side Langho by a single goal in an entertaining game. Langho made a good start and forced a series of corners in a bright opening spell when Colne keeper Harry Turner made a good save from a goalbound shot and Sam Holt denied Joel Phelps with a good tackle after an enterprising run into the Colne area. Advertisement But the Reds soon settled into the game and after 14 minutes came close to opening the scoring when Bobby Carter forced his way between two defenders in the visitors' area and his angled shot came back off the far post with the keeper beaten. Colne continued to create chances with Miles Storey providing crosses into the Langho area and on the half-hour a half-clearance fell to Jack Holt 25 yards out and his high lob over the stranded keeper came back off the bar. As play switched to the other end, Phelps cut inside after a good left wing run and his shot was parried by Turner as it remained goalless at the break. As the second half began, Colne pushed forward and created a series of good chances with Carter again testing the keeper and Storey's searching crosses looking for team-mates in front of goal. Mo Butt's through ball released Jordyn Fitton for a 20-yard shot that flew inches past the post after 65 minutes. Advertisement And three minutes later, Alberto Canache's cross from the bye-line found Alex-Ray Harvey, whose powerful shot brought a great save from keeper Jacob Russell to turn the ball over. But Langho were dangerous on the break and Harry Bedford opened up the Colne defence with a good run in to the area before Shak Ali made a great block to divert his goalbound shot for a corner. But after 75 minutes, it was a corner at the other end that led to Colne taking the lead as Fitton's high cross was headed goalward by Holt and brought a great save by the keeper before Barney Wiggin fired home the loose ball to put the Reds in front. Some end-to-end play in the closing stages brought half-chances for both sides, but Colne ran out well-deserved winners on the balance of play.

Consultation to look at closing children's A&E unit in Ormskirk
Major changes to hospital services in West Lancashire and Sefton are being planned, which could include the closure of the children's Accident and Emergency unit in NHS said closing the current A&E department in Ormskirk and moving it to Southport was its "preferred option".It said it would be £45m cheaper than having a combined A&E department in Ormskirk and would address "inefficiencies, workforce pressures, and fragmented care delivery". A meeting today was set to agree a 13-week formal consultation. 'Long-term solutions' Southport children's A&E department was closed 20 years ago and children currently had to travel to Ormskirk for emergency care, where the opening hours were limited to between 08:00 and midnight during the pandemic and were never reinstated.A report to a meeting of the Shaping Care Together joint committee, led by Cheshire and Merseyside and Lancashire and South Cumbria Trusts, said it was looking to "explore long-term solutions for high-quality, sustainable care".It said it currently "faces pressures from aging infrastructure, workforce shortages, financial challenges, and rising patient demand"."With increasing population aging and complexity in care needs, maintaining duplicate services across two sites is unsustainable," it said. Men accused of shooting prison officer dead in 'revenge' for exposing affair with guard are pictured at Glastonbury
Two men accused of shooting a prison officer dead after he exposed an illegal affair were pictured attending Glastonbury Festival together. Elias Morgan and Anthony Cleary allegedly murdered father-of-four Lenny Scott who was fatally injured outside a West Lancashire gym in February last year. Morgan is said to have shot the victim in an 'act of retaliation' after Mr Scott, 33, exposed an illicit relationship involving him and a female prison guard at HMP Altcourse in Liverpool. Cleary allegedly assisted Morgan by 'delivering the van and bike so they could be used by a gunman who intended to kill Lenny Scott'. Both men deny murder and Cleary also denies a second charge of manslaughter. A timeline of Morgan and Cleary's relationship has now revealed the pair go as far back as at least June 2023, when they were seen together at Glastonbury Festival. Their attendance came just days after Morgan entered a not guilty plea to possession of an unauthorised phone recovered by Mr Scott. The pictures show Morgan with his arm around Cleary with dozens of festival-goers in the background. In another image the pair can be seen lying down. Court proceedings yesterday saw prosecutor Alex Leach KC take the jury through a timeline of events made up of CCTV, ANPR footage and cell site data. Telematics data on Morgan's Mercedes vehicle showed it was in Spain until December 11 2023 from at least July 11, the court was told. Between November 12 and 19 that year, a number attributed to Morgan used networks in the UAE and in Spain until December 11. A phone attributed to Morgan and Cleary then crossed from Spain into France on December 12, the court heard. Cleary told an associate in a recovered Instagram message he was with 'me bird, me mate' and they were 'bringing car back from Spain, few stops on the way'. The pair were also pictured together in Paris in images recovered from Cleary's handset before the Mercedes was back in Liverpool on December 13. In the early hours of December 23, Morgan made a payment to Aer Lingus in Dublin and later made a payment to Manchester Airport, the court heard. A phone attributed to Morgan was used across mainland Europe between December 24 and 30 and in Spain between New Year's Eve and January 2, 2024. Mr Leach said that on January 3, Morgan went on a 'reconnaissance trip' where, along with other unidentified men, he visited three addresses linked to Mr Scott. These included the North West Mecca Gym in Speke, Mr Scott's home address in Prescot and a gym at Peel House in Skelmersdale - outside which Mr Scott was later shot dead. The court previously heard the root of Mr Scott's alleged murder lay in his discovery of Morgan's mobile phone on March 26, 2020. On it, he found evidence that exposed Morgan's sexual relationship with prison officer Sarah Williams. Morgan told Mr Scott to 'balls up the paperwork' and even offered him £1,500 not to report it, jurors were told. But the prison officer submitted the paperwork - and from that moment 'Elias Morgan told Lenny Scott that he would get him, he said he would bide his time, but that he would get him'. Jurors heard that on February 8, 2024, Mr Scott was leaving a gym in Skelmersdale, Lancashire 'when he was approached by a man wearing a high-visibility jacket and carrying a handgun'. 'The man shot him, six times, to the head and body,' Mr Leach said. 'Lenny Scott died of his injuries. 'The murder was, the prosecution says, an act of retaliation.' Jurors were told that mobile phone evidence showed the two men spent January 3 as a 'day of reconnaissance' as part of the plan to kill Mr Scott. They visited locations including the area of his home as well as gyms he formerly and currently attended. Mr Leach told the jury yesterday: 'The evidence you are about to hear, when examined in detail, reveals a powerful image, one in which Elias Morgan, driven by a desire for revenge and reliant on Anthony Cleary for his assistance, planned and executed the murder of Lenny Scott. Both men, the prosecution says, are guilty of his murder.' The trial continues.

First golfer from Estonia to make British Open did so after holing out for eagle in playoff
Qualifiers for majors always produce some great stories and the 2025 British Open final qualifiers were no different. Especially at the West Lancashire qualifier in Liverpool, England, where Richard Teder, an amateur, became the first golfer from Estonia to make it to a British Open. Teder, ranked 91st in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, did it in one of the more interesting, and heartstopping, ways. Coming down the stretch, he seemed pretty safely in at 7 under. Lucas Herbert won this qualifier at 8 under but disaster struck Teder on the 18th hole when he made double bogey. That dropped him to 5 over, but all was not lost. That sent him to a 4-for-2 playoff. So what did he Teder do on the first playoff hole? After hitting driver close to 340 yards, when his competitors chose to hit 3-wood, Teder holed out his second shot from 80 yards for eagle. What a cool Richard Teder looked set to book a spot at @TheOpen but double-bogeyed the last hole at final a 4-for-2 holed out for eagle on the first playoff now be the first Estonian golf ever to play in an Open. It was a remarkable rollercoaster of events that led the amateur do what no one from his country had done before. Playing out of Estonian Golf & Country Club, Teder is now in the history books. His club is one of seven golf courses in Estonia, according to The first one in the country was built in 1993. Estonia, a nation of 1.3 million people, is located south of Finland across the gulf in Northern Europe. It was formerly a part of the Soviet Union.
