Person in custody after shooting outside Broward County strip club, sheriff's office says
A person is in custody after a shooting outside a Broward County strip club early Saturday morning, the sheriff's office said. Broward County Sheriff's deputies got a call for a shooting just before 6 a.m. outside the Playhouse Gentlemen's Club in West Park. West Park resident Mark Young got a call from a friend about it. He told CBS News Miami this isn't the first time he's heard about a shooting in his town. "Here we go again," Young said. "It's a shame we have to live in fear." Deputies were seen canvassing the area early Saturday morning, where several damaged cars were seen in the parking lot and towed away. Deputies took one person into custody. Young said it's a bad look for the area. "It's kinda really scary," he said. "People [are] just afraid to come by this here area." Investigators are still looking into what led up to the shooting, and there's no word yet on whether anyone was hurt. The area was taped off for hours in the morning along West Hallandale Beach Boulevard. Young told CBS News Miami he's not the only resident who isn't comfortable in this part of town. "They are very concerned, they are very afraid to even pass by here because you don't know what's gonna happen," Young said. CBS News Miami has reached out to the Playhouse Gentlemen's Club and has not gotten a response. The scene has cleared up, and the club is open again. CBS News Miami has followed up with the sheriff's office, asking if there are any other suspects.

Arts center at landmark Upper West Side church being evicted after years-long fight over lease
After years of fighting to keep its lease at a landmark church on the Upper West Side, an arts center has been served eviction papers. They have days to move out but aren't giving up just yet. Arts center offers rehearsal space, performance venues Right outside West Park Presbyterian Church, supporters signed a petition Wednesday to keep the Center at West Park at the landmark location. "It is the only not-for-profit building of this nature that you can have a self-sustaining arts and culture community space and a sacred space on Sunday for Lighthouse Chapel," said Debby Hirschman, executive director of Center at West Park. Throughout the building, spaces are used for different forms of rehearsals. "When you walk into this room, it's like a totally different world," said Hazen Cuyler, artistic director of Greenhouse Ensemble. "It's so exciting to be able to offer affordable rehearsal space, offer performances in a venue that artists early in their careers are often not able to access," said Madelyn Paquette, a resident producer with the arts center. Church wants building to be demolished, rebuilt But all of this will soon come to an end. Center at West Park has been told they must move out by Monday. After a years-long battle, the church's lawyer says the Court of Appeals agreed that the lease violated the religious corporation law. This will give the 135-year-old church an opportunity to go through the landmark preservation process to enforce its rights to be demolished and rebuilt. "The church is a beautiful structure, and it's serving a great purpose," event host Stephen Adly Guirgis said. Paquette said losing the space would be "devastating." The church's lawyer says locks will be changed on Tuesday and anyone inside will be removed. Meanwhile, Hirschman says although they do have backup locations ready, the fight isn't over just yet.

Man shot by Broward sheriff's deputy in West Park
A man was shot by a Broward sheriff's deputy in West Park Sunday afternoon after punching a deputy in the face, according to the sheriff's office. The man, who was not identified, was taken to the hospital. An update on his condition was not immediately available. The incident began shortly before 12:30 p.m. when a 911 caller reported a 'suspicious incident involving a weapon,' on the 4000 block of S.W. 26 Street, said Carey Codd, spokesman for the sheriff's office. 'On scene an adult male subject punched a deputy in the face,' he said at a news conference, held in front of yellow crime-scene tape that blocked off the street of single-family houses between Pembroke Road and Hallandale Beach Boulevard. 'During the altercation, a deputy was forced to fire their weapon in response to the ongoing threat. The adult male subject was struck by the gunfire.' Deputies provided medical assistance at the scene, he said, and the man was taken to the hospital. The deputy who was punched was also taken to the hospital and appeared to be OK, Codd said. Codd said he didn't have information on whether the deputy who was punched was the same one who shot the man, how many shots were fired or whether any weapons were recovered in connection with the initial 911 call. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating, as is standard in police-involved shootings, and the sheriff's office is also investigating, Codd said. Any deputies who fired their weapon will be placed on administrative assignment pending the outcome of the investigation.
