More Iowa women's basketball schedule details emerge

More Iowa women's basketball schedule details emerge Anticipation for the Iowa women's basketball season that's ahead continues to build. The Hawkeyes' freshman class—guards Addie Deal and Journey Houston and post Layla Hays—moved in over the weekend. News also broke on the Iowa women's basketball 2025-26 schedule. Several more dates on that Hawkeye schedule were revealed. According to Kyle Huesmann of Hawkeye Report, Iowa will host Western Illinois on Nov. 25, Fairfield on Nov. 30 and Lindenwood on Dec. 13. Iowa leads the all-time series against Western Illinois, 9-2. The most recent meeting came on Dec. 22, 2020, in a 92-65 Hawkeye win. Former Iowa big Monika Czinano scored 19 points in that victory. Western Illinois finished last season with a 17-17 record. Iowa's date against Fairfield will be the two schools' first meeting. Fairfield advanced to last year's NCAA Tournament and finished with a 28-5 record. The Stags earned a No. 12 seed before falling to fifth-seeded Kansas State. Fairfield also advanced to the 2024 NCAA Tournament and had a 31-2 record during that campaign. Iowa will also meet Lindenwood for the first time in program history. Lindenwood advanced to the WNIT's third round and finished with a 23-11 mark. Hawkeye Report's public records request also revealed that Iowa will travel to Northern Iowa on Nov. 16 and that the Hawkeyes will face Baylor and Miami in the 2025 WBCA Showcase. The Hawkeyes' 2025-26 Big Ten opponents were also previously unveiled. Iowa will host Illinois, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Ohio State, Penn State, Washington and Oregon. Meanwhile, the Hawkeyes will travel to Indiana, Maryland, Rutgers, Purdue, Northwestern, Wisconsin, UCLA and USC. Iowa's lone conference foe that it will play both home and away is Nebraska. Iowa will also travel to Iowa State on Dec. 10 and will play defending national champion Connecticut in the Women's Champions Classic on Dec. 20. Former Nebraska defensive lineman transfers to Western Illinois

Former Nebraska defensive lineman transfers to Western Illinois Former Nebraska football defensive lineman David Borchers transferred to Western Illinois on Monday. He made the announcement on social media. Borchers entered the program as a walk-on after initially signing with Iowa Central Community College. He made the transition to the defensive line in 2024 after redshirting in 2023. He did not appear in any games in the 2024 season. The defensive lineman officially entered the transfer portal on April 29. Borchers was originally a three-star prospect and was ranked among the top 20 players in the state of Iowa in his recruiting class, per 247Sports Rankings. He officially enrolled at Nebraska on July 1, 2023 Borchers measures six feet four inches and weighs 300 pounds. His size can certainly be an asset, allowing him to play either side of the football. On top of this, he still has the opportunity to remain close to home. Now he has a chance to make a name for himself at the FCS level. WIU celebrates early results of ‘Prepare for Illinois' Future' program

Western Illinois University is known as an opportunity institution that helps students increase their social mobility. Taking it a step further, Western Illinois University is the first school to become a part of the 'Prepare for Illinois' Future' program. 'It's this access to affordable, high-quality test prep that can be the difference between that dream being realized, or that dream being deferred,' said State Sen. Mike Halpin, D-Rock Island. The program covers costs of test prep for grad students, licensures, and career entrance exams in areas such as medicine, nursing, and cybersecurity. 'What it means is these students are increasing their earning potential, and very likely if they are going to school here in Illinois, they are able to stay here in Illinois and find that career in Illinois,' Halpin two months, the program has saved students nearly $8 million in out-of-pocket costs. 'Of all the investments that we can make as a state, investing in the next generation's education, investing in that workforce is paramount,' said Harrison Dehnert, a Western Illinois graduate student. 'The program helps tear down barriers and ensure the costs are not a deterrent for students seeking to advance their academic endeavors,' said Justin Schuch, Western Illinois University's vice president for student success. The program doesn't just help the students, but also supports local businesses. 'The future success the Quad Cities depends on ensuring that students have the tools, resources, and opportunities they need to thrive,' said Chris Caves, a member of the Quad Cities Chamber of Commerce. 'Without them businesses struggle to find qualified talent, innovation stalls, and our community misses out on the full potential of the next generation.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Iowa baseball drops midweek non-conference matchup vs. Western Illinois

Iowa baseball drops midweek non-conference matchup vs. Western Illinois After returning home following a three-game weekend sweep against Michigan, Iowa baseball (27-12, 17-4 Big Ten) suffered a disappointing 7-3 midweek loss vs. Western Illinois (12-24, 5-10 Ohio Valley) from Duane Banks Field on Tuesday evening. Graduate senior right-hander Daniel Wright (2-1, 3.50 ERA) got the start for the Hawkeyes, which saw him give up one earned run on five hits, walk two, and strike out three over three innings of work. Although Wright would escape two bases-loaded jams in the first and third innings, he would be tagged with the loss. Four other pitchers saw the mound for Iowa following Wright's departure. While Iowa's pitching staff combined for 15 strikeouts, the Hawkeyes gave up 10 free bases that prolonged multiple scoring threats by the Leathernecks. "It was a combination of bad luck," said head coach Rick Heller. "We hit a bunch of balls in the third, fourth, and fifth that were just smoked that we didn't get rewarded for. Then, when we try to get things going and we are in a good place, we had some horrendous at-bats at the wrong time." Western Illinois opened the scoring in the first inning on a fielder's choice RBI and then tacked on three in the fifth on an RBI single, walk, and wild pitch to take a commanding 4-0 lead. Iowa scored its first run in the bottom of the fifth when Gable Mitchell hit an RBI double to score Andy Nelson to cut the deficit to three. Western Illinois would add two more runs in the top of the seventh, which was answered by an RBI single by Daniel Rogers in the bottom half of the frame. The ninth inning would see the Leatherneck add their seventh run of the game in the top of the inning, and Iowa answer with their third and final run of the evening with a Miles Risley solo blast. While Iowa would outhit Western Illinois by an 11-8 margin, the 10 walks surrendered, coupled with hitting 4-for-21 with runners on base, would handcuff the Hawkeyes on an overall disappointing outing offensively. "We gave them too many free bases," said Heller. "They were swining it, we knew that coming in that they could swing it. That it wasn't just one or two guys, that there were several that the way they were playing right now we would have to pitch well. On a night like tonight you just have to outscore them, and we didn't." Iowa will play another midweek game today vs. St. Thomas (19-14, 13-4 Summit League) from Duane Banks Field with fifth-year senior left-hander Benjamin DeTaeye (0-3, 4.35 ERA) expected the get the start on the mound. Wednesday's game is scheduled for a 6:02 p.m. CT first pitch and will stream on Big Ten Plus (subscription required).
