TV star reveals his voice has actually changed thanks to 15 years playing iconic
A TV star has revealed that 15 years of playing an iconic cartoon character has left his voice permanently changed. H Jon Benjamin, 59, is an actor, author, and comedian who has played and voiced several popular TV characters over the years, having started his career in the late 80s and early 90s. The American actor is known for voicing titular character Sterling Archer on the animated spy spoof series, has played several Family Guy characters, and even voiced a can of vegetables in the 2001 comedy Wet Hot American Summer. Of all the roles he's had, it's 15 years of playing titular character Bob Belcher on Bob's Burgers that has actually left Benjamin's voice sounding different. Bob's Burgers focuses on the Belcher family, who run the eponymous burger restaurant in the fictional New Jersey shore town of Seymour's Bay. Benjamin took on the role of Bob in 2011 alongside John Roberts who plays Bob's wife Linda, Dan Mintz who plays eldest daughter Tina, Eugene Mirman who plays only son Gene, and Kristen Schaal who voices Louise. As of 2025, the show has a dedicated international fanbase, having produced almost 300 episodes – something that has apparently changed Benjamin's everyday voice. He told Variety: 'I was living in Boston doing comedy. I just kept working with [comedian Jonathan Katz] So, he gave me the part of Bob, I said yes, and it hasn't stopped in years. 'Whenever you start doing a television show, you feel like it's gonna get canceled after a season. You do one, and you're happy to get two, then three… '[But] I didn't sound like this at all 15 years ago. Now I talk like Bob. I've become him.' An IMDb rating allows users on the website to give a score out of 10 to either a film they have seen or an episode of TV they have watched. The website then works out the average score. The Plight Before Christmas (season 13, episode 10) 9.6 The Hauntening (S6 E3) 9.1 The Amazing Rudy (S14 E2) 9.0 Glued, Where's My Bob? (S6 E19) 9.0 Amelia (S13 E22) 9.0 The Oeder Games (S5 E21) 8.7 Bob Day Afternoon (S2 E2) 8.6 Housetrap (S5 E19) 8.6 Boyz 4 Now (S3 E21) 8.5 Bob Actually (S7 E9) 8.5 He later admitted that playing both Bob and Archer on two long-running sitcoms often left him feeling worn out: 'I'd have a 10am Archer session, then go to Bob's, and I'd have no voice left,' he said. Archer began in 2009 and eventually ran for 14 seasons, finally coming to an end in 2023 after Benjamin had been in more than 140 episodes, alongside actresses Aisha Tyler and the late Jessica Walter. In Bob's Burgers, Bob is often shown to be exasperated by his inadequate work-life balance, leading him to sound depressed, tired, and even hoarse in many scenes. Fans of Bob's Burgers have noted that while Bob might have changed Benjamin's voice over the years, the voice actor has also altered Bob's voice as the years have gone by. More Trending Reddit user OldPomegranate17 said: 'I detected Bob's low-energy voice right away [in season 14]. I have two theories: they're recording remotely or Bob is simply 14 years older and we are hearing a natural change in his voice.' Bob's Burgers has been renewed for another four seasons by Disney Plus, which will keep the show going until at least 2029. View More » Watch episodes of Bob's Burgers on Disney Plus and Apple TV. MTV's the State Look Back on Early Years in New Documentary: ‘It Was Intense in Every Way'
The MTV sketch comedy show The State ran for a mere 24 episodes between January 1994 and August 1995. And if you weren't a teenager or young adult during that narrow window of time, odds are high you've never even heard of it. But the show left an enormous cultural footprint and launched the careers of some of the greatest comedic minds working today, including Thomas Lennon, Michael Showalter, Kerri Kenney-Silver, Ken Marino, David Wain, Ben Garant, and Kevin Allison, and ultimately led to Wet Hot American Summer, Reno 911!, Children's Hospital, They Came Together, and many other brilliant films and TV shows of the past few three decades. The new documentary Long Live the State, premiering this week at the Tribeca Film Festival, goes back to their roots as an NYU sketch comedy troupe in the Eighties, and traces their entire saga to the present day. It features new interviews with all 11 members of the group. More from Rolling Stone New Doc Explores How Julia Sweeney's 'SNL' Favorite Pat Became a Complex Nonbinary Icon USC's SoCal VoCals Are Pitch Perfect in 'Just Sing' Documentary Trailer 'The Four Seasons' Gives Kerri Kenney-Silver Her Long-Overdue Close-Up 'I've been a fan of The State since my freshman year in high school when the first season premiered,' Long Live The State Director Matthew Perniciaro tells Rolling Stone. 'I was just so inspired by their courage to be weird, unapologetic and different, which was something you just didn't really see on TV at that time. I grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina as a kid who didn't always feel like I fit in with those around me, but I knew that if I met someone who liked The State and they got it the way I got it, then those were my kind of people. It had a significant impact on my life and it's a story I've wanted to tell for many years.' In this exclusive clip from the movie, the group remembers the grimy city they encountered when they first arrived at NYU. 'New York in the Eighties was intense, in every way, in the best possible ways, and the worst possible says,' says Kenney-Silver, who landed the role of a lifetime earlier this year in The Four Seasons. 'There was so much happening.' The experience of making their own show for MTV directly out of college was a whirlwind. And when it ended, the group wasn't always on the same page about how to carry forward. The tension peaked when only a subset of them signed onto the Comedy Central show Viva Variety. In putting the film together, Perniciaro discovered that they all remembers things a bit differently. 'You can have 11 people in a room, all witnessing the same thing and they all have different memories of what happened because that's how they perceived it,' he says. 'I wanted to make sure the film embraced how different members may have felt differently in each of those situations and give people their own agency to discuss how that felt to them on a personal level, instead of one unified public statement.' The difficult years are largely just bad memories for the group now, and they remain close friends. They even went on tour a couple of years back when the SAG strike shut down Hollywood, and they suddenly had space on their calendars. 'The State is like a family,' says Perniciaro. 'They love each other like a family, they've fought with one another like a family and they've shared some of the most important moments of each of their lives with one another, the same way a family does. To be in one another's lives from such a young age and for such a long period of time now, over thirty-five years, it really couldn't be any other way and that's what I wanted this film to be, kind of like a family scrapbook that not only celebrates the work they've created together, but the people behind that work.' { pmcCnx({ settings: { plugins: { pmcAtlasMG: { iabPlcmt: 1, }, pmcCnx: { singleAutoPlay: 'auto' } } }, playerId: "d762a038-c1a2-4e6c-969e-b2f1c9ec6f8a", mediaId: "43045ddb-a878-423a-a98c-b5c4f829b501", }).render("connatix_player_43045ddb-a878-423a-a98c-b5c4f829b501_4"); }); Best of Rolling Stone The 50 Best 'Saturday Night Live' Characters of All Time Denzel Washington's Movies Ranked, From Worst to Best 70 Greatest Comedies of the 21st Century

Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd were scolded on ‘Wet Hot American Summer' set by David Hyde Pierce
Talk about a buzzkill. 'Frasier' star David Hyde Pierce allegedly called out his 'Wet Hot American Summer' co-stars Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler for drinking and being too loud before his first day of filming the 2001 movie. 'Do you remember David Hyde Pierce coming out [of his room] to tell us, 'Can you be a little quieter?'' Poehler asked Rudd during the latest episode of her 'Good Hang' podcast. 5 Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler reflected on their time filming 'Wet Hot American Summer' during an episode of the 'Good Hang' podcast. YouTube/Good Hang with Amy Poehler 'Yeah, it was his first day,' Rudd replied. 'We were all dumb kids, [we] just wanted to have a blast.' The duo recalled cast members spending most nights hanging out together in the main living quarters, listening to music and drinking beer until the early morning. 'But, reminder, we were not kids. We were in our 30s,' Poehler clarified. 'You were [in your] late 20s, I think I was 30,' Rudd said. Pierce was scheduled to work later on set later in the day. 'We were all like, 'What is this guy gonna think?'' Rudd said. 5 David Hyde Pierce allegedly asked his 'Wet Hot American Summer' co-stars to 'be a little quieter' in the lounge area ahead of his first day filming. Focus Features 5 Poehler appeared in 'Wet Hot American Summer' the same year she made her 'Saturday Night Live' debut. When the four-time Emmy-winning actor arrived on set, Poehler assumed he was 'probably rehearsing' his lines in his room near their nightly hangout spot as they got sloshed. 'It was his first night; none of us knew him, and it was like 1 in the morning, and it's so loud. He's filming the next morning, and he's been in his room' Rudd said. 'He's a professional. I remember he came out and then stopped in the doorway, and we all — it was like the needle on the record. Stop. Everyone got quiet. We all looked and Ken Marino just goes, 'Oh great, it's Frasier.' Do you remember that? And David Hyde Pierce is like, 'What are you guys doing?' Like, he was so fun and cool and it was just like 'Oh, thank God.'' 5 'Wet Hot American Summer' debuted in 2001. USA Films 5 Rudd played Andy in 'Wet Hot American Summer.' Freelance 'Yeah, he was the nicest, most loveliest guy but he definitely was like, 'What's happening here?' Poehler said sternly. 'And we were like, 'Oh, none of us are working. We don't have anything to shoot tomorrow.'' Poehler admitted the cast 'worked very little' on the film. The movie came out during the same year that Poehler joined 'Saturday Night Live' as a cast member. The film inspired Netflix to produce both a 'Wet Hot American Summer' prequel in 2015 and a sequel in 2017. Pierce, Poehler and Rudd participated in all three of the productions.

Michael Ian Black talks Savannah, ‘Have I Got News For You'
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — Comedian Michael Ian Black, best known for 'Have I Got News For You' is no stranger to Savannah. The 'Wet Hot American Summer' actor tours as a comedian but lives in the Hostess City, thanks in large part to his son once attending the Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD). Black, at one time a Connecticut resident, was first tipped off to the Coastal Empire after a Zillow search. 'Savannah was on the list,' Black said. 'Our son was already going to school here, so I just went on Zillow and I was like, What's for sale in Savannah? And then we saw something and then we bought it a week later.' This was after his son was enrolled in the school. Black has lived here ever since, and every once in a while shares his talent with the community. In December, he recited Truman Capote's 'A Christmas Memory' at the Old Dairy Farm, hosted by the Flannery O'Connor Childhood Home Museum. Soon after that reading, it was announced that his latest role as a panelist on CNN's 'Have I Got News For You' would continue, with season two premiering on Feb. 15. The comedy show hosted by 'Daily Show' alum Roy Wood Jr. combines game show and panel chat show for a new formula that turns dishing on topical subjects into play. Black is a regular on the panel along with comedian, talk show host and 'Late Night with Seth Meyers' writer Amber Ruffin. Black and Ruffin are joined by two guest panelists apiece, divided into 'Micheal's Team' and 'Amber's Team.' The formula is not new, but it has only recently made its debut in the United States. 'The show was created 35 years ago,' said Black. 'It's been running in the U.K. for decades. So, I don't know what the impetus was. And I know they'd been trying to bring it over here for several years. I was actually involved in one of those efforts, I mean, I feel like over ten years ago, and I didn't even remember that I had been involved in one of those efforts until I came back to do it this time. And the executive producer and producer reminded me that I had been I had done a pilot of this show already, and I had forgotten. But I think the real question is why did CNN choose to take this show as it was? You really it's not just like, let's put some funny pictures up and do some things. It's you've got some researchers and some producers that are pretty politically savvy, right?' 'Have I Got News For You' skewers the current Trump administration, a task that in a time of intense political volatility, Black says it is harder than you think. 'There's two problems that we're dealing with,' said Black. 'The first is that none of us find what's happening funny, like when we're not backstage, just like slapping our knees at the news cycle. I would I don't want to say it feels existential, but it's not that far off from being existential. And then the second problem is because certain individuals in our government are dominating, they essentially are competing for every last molecule of oxygen that we have.' Despite this, Black insists that the weekly show offers a range of opinions, particularly from guest panelists. While the hosts lean liberal in their ideologies, guests such as Republican U.S. Representatives Mike Lawler (NY-13) and Tim Burchett (TN-02) have brought an opposing viewpoint to the panel. 'The way I look at it is if we're inviting you on to this show, it is akin to inviting you to our home,' Black said. While Black insists on inviting others into his TV home, he remains welcomed in the Savannah community that he continues to call home. 'Have I Got News For You' airs Sunday nights on CNN at 9:00 p.m. ET, and each episode can be viewed on Max. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
