Meet the Emirati teen prodigy making a difference as inventor, voice of youth
2 July 2025 00:59 MAYS IBRAHIM (ABU DHABI)Ali Humaid Alloghani has shown the instincts of an innovator from an early age. Always wondering about how things worked and ways to make them better, he did what many kids were warned not to do: he took his toys eight years old, he put together some recycled toy parts and built a moving robot that lit up. Now 14, Alloghani is an established inventor and parliamentarian, channelling his curiosity to design solutions that seek to improve lives, in addition to amplifying the voices of Emirati youth. 'That project gave me my first hands-on experience of how creativity and innovation can turn ideas into real solutions,' he told Aletihad in a recent interview. 'It ignited my passion for using invention as a way to solve problems and help others.' One invention he is especially proud of is the 'Smart Wheelchair Glove', which allows individuals with limited mobility to control their wheelchairs through simple hand gestures. 'I want to use technology to make the world more inclusive and supportive for everyone,' the young Emirati told Aletihad. 'This invention is designed to empower people with disabilities by giving them greater independence and safety, helping them move more freely and confidently in their daily lives.' A True Voice for the Youth As a member of the UAE Children's Parliament, Alloghani feels a deep sense of responsibility that influences his work as an inventor.'It motivates me to create meaningful inventions that can improve education, enhance safety, and promote inclusion for everyone in our community,' he explained.'Through my role, I am inspired to look closely at the challenges our society faces and develop creative solutions that can make a real, positive difference in people's lives.'His main responsibilities at the Children's Parliament include being a true voice for the hopes and needs of children nationwide. He gathers their views directly from schools and communities then conveys them to decision-makers through clear and practical proposals.'I work hand in hand with my fellow parliament members to research issues such as education, health, and the environment, and we submit our recommendations to the relevant authorities to ensure that children's perspectives are an essential part of national policies. This helps build a nation that meets our ambitions and reflects our aspirations for a better future,' Alloghani said. Big Dreams He credits much of his progress to the unwavering support of his family, school, and the government. 'My family has always believed in me and supported my ideas, even when they seemed unusual. They invested in the tools, courses, and opportunities I needed to learn and grow. My school encouraged me by giving me a platform to showcase my projects and recognised my efforts, which motivated me to keep innovating,' Alloghani said. 'The UAE Government's programmes for youth innovation have provided invaluable resources, mentorship, and inspiration, showing me that my country believes in the potential of young people to shape the future.'Through curiosity, grit, and innovation, he aims to help tackle pressing global challenges and advance humanitarian efforts. 'I hope to develop creative solutions to environmental challenges, such as reducing waste, encouraging the use of clean energy, and conserving water resources. I also aim to design technologies that improve the lives of people with disabilities or special needs, ensuring they can live with greater ease and independence.' Empowering Young Emiratis Looking ahead, Alloghani dreams of becoming an ambassador for artificial intelligence and an aerospace engineer who will proudly represent the UAE on the global stage. 'At the same time, I hope to continue serving as a voice for children, making sure that their hopes and perspectives shape a brighter, more inclusive future for everyone,' he noted. To other young Emiratis interested in science, technology, or civic engagement, Alloghani said: 'Believe in your ideas, and don't be afraid to ask questions or make mistakes; that's how you learn, grow, and make a meaningful difference.'

Meet the Wimbledon 2025 tennis presenters, commentators and pundits
Wimbledon 2025 won't just feature the very best tennis players in the world rocking up in south west London over the course of the Championships. The BBC also has their very own star-studded lineup of presenters, commentators and pundits helping to bring the coverage into the living rooms of millions of viewers around the country. But who exactly are those playing their part in the corporation's Wimbledon coverage this year? Let's take a look at those looking to shine off the courts for the BBC… Isa Guha will be on presenting duties from 11am daily, taking viewers through the morning action from SW19. The former England cricketer, who works on the BBC's coverage of cricket, made her debut in the Wimbledon hot seat three years ago. Veteran broadcaster Clare Balding will take the reigns from Guha in the afternoon in place of Sue Barker, who stepped down as the main presenter in 2022 after 22 years anchoring the BBC's coverage of the tournament. In the evenings, Qasa Alom will front the daily highlights show – Today at Wimbledon – while the wheelchair tennis coverage will be led by Andy Stevenson. Nick Kyrgios was a Wimbledon commentator in 2024 – but the fiery Australian star is not a part of the BBC's coverage this time around. This year's line-up features Andrew Castle, Chris Bradnam, James Burridge, Pat Cash, Naomi Cavaday, Matt Chilton, Andrew Cotter, Annabel Croft, Katherine Downes, Jo Durie, Colin Fleming, Paul Hand, Daniela Hantuchova, Dom Inglot, Abigail Johnson and Anne Keothavong. Robbie Koenig, David Law, Nick Lester, Alicia Molik, Ryan Harrison, John Lloyd, Ronald Mcintosh, Alison Mitchell, Nick Monroe, Nick Mullins, Pete Odgers, Arvind Parmar, Louise Pleming, Simon Reed, Candy Reid, Sam Smith, Liz Smylie, Mel South, Andy Stevenson and Todd Woodbridge are all part of the BBC's team too. Jayant Mistry, Louise Hunt and Katie O'Brien are on commentary duties for the Wheelchair events. The presenters will be joined in the studio by various tennis legends such as John McEnroe, Martina Navratilova, Billie Jean King and Pat Cash. More Trending The likes of Tim Henman, Tracy Austin and Annabel Croft will also be on hand to offer their insights both in the studio and in the commentary box. Boris Becker, who was previously a mainstay in the BBC's coverage before his spell in prison, once again misses out. Becker served eight months of his two-and-a-half year sentence for hiding £2.5m of assets and loans to avoid paying his debts and was released in December 2022. There were rumours that Andy Murray might be popping up in the commentary box in SW19 – but he's not a part of the BBC's coverage. Their easy maintenance, ease of use, and affordability serve to account for their dominance. Especially where cost is an overriding consideration, such as low- to middle-income regions, hospitals and rehab facilities widely use manual wheelchairs for both short-term and long-term mobility support. Battery-operated wheelchairs, meanwhile, are bound to grow fastest as consumer preference for comfort and independence increases. Individuals who are severely handicapped or aged people seeking indoor-outdoor mobility via batteries, in particular, favor them. Improvements in battery life, joystick operations, and advanced navigation technology promote their increased acceptance. By Category: With 74.4% market share, adults were the largest consumer base in 2023. The growing world geriatric population and the rise of age-related musculoskeletal disorders are the main reasons behind this segment's predominance. Disorders such as arthritis, spinal cord damage, and post-stroke disability bring with them a demand for movement aids among this population. With manufacturers and medical professionals focusing on ergonomically shaped, customizable, and lightweight mobility solutions for disabled children, the pediatric wheelchairs segment is likely to grow rapidly. The growth of the segment is also assisted by enhanced identification and treatment of congenital mobility issues and cerebral palsy. By Application: At a 38.4% value share, rehab centers emerged as the highest-grossing application sector in 2023. Wheelchairs are usually employed in such centers, both temporary and long-term, for patient recovery programs. Increasing numbers of rehab centers and postoperative recovery programs, including mobility training, contribute further to driving demand. Hospitals will most probably experience the fastest growth because the need for wheelchairs in long-term care facilities, emergency departments, and surgical recovery rooms increases. Demand is increasing directly from the global growth of hospital infrastructure and acute care therapies. During the forecast period, Asia-Pacific will experience the highest growth. This is due to fast population aging in countries such as China and Japan, greater awareness of healthcare concerns, and government spending on disability and rehabilitation programs. In addition, promoting the adoption of premium mobility aids is rising disposable income levels in emerging economies.
