George Gibney arrested over alleged sexual abuse following extradition from US
Former National and Olympic Swimming Coach George Gibney has been arrested following his deportation from the United States at the request of the Irish authorities. The 77-year-old was arrested by US Marshalls in Florida, where he had lived for over 30 years, earlier this month on foot of an extradition request by gardaí. He is accused of 78 counts of indecent assault and one count of attempted rape. He had been held in custody in the US but was flown to Dublin overnight via Washington DC, escorted by members of the Garda Extradition Unit attached to the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation (NBCI). Gardai have confirmed that Gibney is currently being held in a garda station in Dublin and will appear before the Criminal Courts of Justice later this morning. In a statement, a garda spokesperson said: "Following an extradition from the United States of America at the request of the Irish authorities, a male (70s) was arrested by Gardaí attached to the Garda National Protective Services Bureau this morning, Tuesday 22nd July 2025 and is being brought before a sitting at the Criminal Courts of Justice at approximately 10:30am. "The man is currently being detained at a Garda Station in Dublin." Gibney was the alleged victims' coach and they were aged between eight and 14 at the time, according to the documents filed with a US district court. The complaints came after the BBC podcast Where is George Gibney? re-examined the story of the Olympic coach who was charged with child sexual abuse but never stood trial. In 1993, the former coach at the Trojan swimming club in Dublin faced 27 charges of indecency against young swimmers. However, the prosecution was successfully halted. His lawyers argued there was a delay in the prosecutions being taken and a lack of precision defining the specific alleged incidents. This legal challenge ended up in the Supreme Court which ruled in his favour. The charges that Gibney is now facing are in relation to different instances of alleged abuse than the charges in 1993. Following the case over 30 years ago, the former swimming coach left Ireland and spent some time in Scotland before moving to the US, where he has been living since. An investigation was then reopened by gardaí following the 2020 BBC podcast documentary and a file was sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions three years later. Last year, the DPP decided he should face charges in connection with allegedly abusing children that were in his care when he was a swimming coach. Gardaí then secured an extradition warrant in the High Court and it's understood they have been working with US authorities for the last six months. George Gibney agrees to extradition to Ireland to face sex abuse charges
Former Olympic swimming coach George Gibney has agreed to be extradited back to Ireland to face historical child sex abuse charges. He appeared before a US court earlier this week after being arrested in Florida on July 1 off the back of an extradition request from gardaí. Gibney's lawyer has since told the court that his client has dropped a planned legal challenge to continue detention in Florida, and has agreed to be extradited to Ireland. In a document made public on Thursday, the public defender of the case said: "On July 8, 2025, undersigned counsel met with Mr Gibney and fully advised of his rights in an extradition proceeding, his right to a detention hearing, and his right to an extradition hearing. "As a result, Mr Gibney has decided to withdraw his request to a detention hearing and stipulate to detention. Likewise, Mr Gibney advised counsel he wants to waive his extradition hearing and be extradited to Ireland. An Affidavit of Waiver of Extradition Hearing will be filed as soon as possible." Upon his extradition to Ireland, the former swimming coach will face 78 charges of indecent assault and one count of attempted rape. Gibney coached the four alleged victims in the case in the 1970s and 1980s, when they were between the ages of eight and 15, according to the complaint lodged with the US District Court for the Middle District of Florida (Orlando). The court filings say the four women made complaints to gardaí between 2020 and 2022. The complaints came after the BBC podcast Where is George Gibney? re-examined the story of the Olympic coach charged with child sexual abuse but never stood trial. In 1993, the former coach at the Trojan swimming club in Dublin faced 27 charges of indecency against young swimmers. However, the prosecution was successfully halted. His lawyers argued there was a delay in the offences coming out and a lack of precision defining the specific alleged incidents. This legal challenge ended up in the Supreme Court which ruled in his favour. The charges that Gibney is now facing are in relation to different instances of alleged abuse than the charges in 1993. Gardaí then secured an extradition warrant in the High Court and it's understood they have been working with US authorities for the last six months. Speaking in Japan after Gibney's arrest last week, Taoiseach Micheál Martin said it shows the importance of judicial operation. He said: "I think we all listened to the podcast. I think it's important that we have an agreement with the US. Gardaí have been working very diligently and in a detailed way, I have no doubt. We will await the next step now."

The Indo Daily: How George Gibney has run from child abuse allegations for over 30 years
When a new garda investigation was launched into him in 2020, Gibney again declined to cooperate, telling a US special agent at his Florida home that he would not assist gardaí or be voluntarily interviewed. His transient history was also noted by US officials in court records, who warned that Gibney 'would be likely to flee' if he became aware of a warrant for his arrest. On Tuesday he was detained by US marshals on foot of the extradition request, and Gibney now sits in a Florida jail as officials attempt to extradite him to Ireland to face 79 charges of sexual offences against four young girls between 1971 and 1981. In 2020 the BBC released a podcast, Where is George Gibney?, in which a number of victims recounted allegations of abuse against Gibney. The podcast traced him to Altamonte Springs in Florida, but he again refused to speak about the allegations when confronted by the producers. Other complainants came forward after listening to the podcast, and a new investigation was launched by the Sexual Crime Management Unit attached to the Garda National Protective Services Bureau. Today on The Indo Daily, Tessa Fleming is joined by Maeve Sheahan, Senior Correspondent with The Sunday Independent, and Chalkie White, a former swimming student who has made allegations of abuse against George Gibney, to discuss how one of Irish sports darkest stories might be reaching a new chapter. This episode of The Indo Daily features discussion surrounding alleged sexual abuse and may not be suitable for everyone.
