Civil servant in Miri loses RM1.1 mln to suspected online investment scam

Her doubts began when she was unable to withdraw the promised profits. – Bernama photo MIRI (June 26): A civil servant in Miri has lost RM1.1 million after allegedly falling victim to a non-existent online investment scheme. In a statement today, Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata said the woman, in her 30s, lodged a police report recently after realising she had been allegedly scammed by an individual impersonating an investment representative. The incident began in early December 2024, when the victim was contacted by the suspect, who offered what appeared to be a lucrative investment opportunity. She was instructed to download an app via a provided link and was promised high returns within a short period. Trusting the scheme, she transferred money in stages into a bank account given by the suspect, amounting to around RM1.1 million in total. Her doubts began when she was unable to withdraw the promised profits. Despite this, the suspect continued to demand additional payments, claiming they were necessary to process the withdrawal. 'At the time the police report was lodged, the victim had not received any of the promised returns,' Mancha said. Authorities say the case underscores the growing threat of online investment scams, particularly those targeting individuals seeking quick financial returns. Mancha advised the public to verify the legitimacy of any investment platform through official channels such as Bank Negara Malaysia at and the Securities Commission Malaysia at before committing any funds. 'Anyone who has recently transferred money to suspicious accounts or e-wallets is advised to contact the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) by dialling 997,' he said. He also recommended using scam-identifying tools like the Whoscall app, which cross-references phone numbers against the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (JSJK) database. 'Phone numbers listed in the department's 'Semak Mule' system are flagged automatically through the app,' said Mancha. As an additional safeguard, the public can verify suspicious bank account numbers or telephone lines via the police's Semak Mule portal at or check the credibility of investment companies using the Investment Checker tool provided by the Securities Commission. To stay informed about the latest scam tactics, the public are encouraged to follow JSJK PDRM and Cyber Crime Alert RMP on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. civil servant Mancha Ata miri online investment scam

Online scam watchdog launches cyberscam reporting platform

An anti-scam watchdog group on Wednesday launched an online platform enabling Filipinos to report cyber scams. Scam Watch Pilipinas, in partnership with Gogolook and the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG), launched Scam Vault Philippines, a Facebook group page that netizens can visit to share and report harmful scams they encounter online. 'Ie-empower natin ang lahat ng Filipinos na may Facebook na sumali sa Scam Vault PH group page. Ang gagawin lang nila magsiye-share sila ng AI scams, social media scams, at nandoon na ang PNP para hindi na sila mahirapan,' Scam Watch Pilipinas co-founder Jocel De Guzman said at the Kapihan sa Manila Bay forum. (We will empower Filipino Facebook users to join the Scam Vault PH group page. All they have to do is report AI scams and social media scams, and the PNP is there to help.) 'Ang protocol kasi kailangan i-report. Pag ni-report medyo matagal… Ngayon, 'pag may nakita tayong scam, i-share natin sa Scam Vault para makita ng PNP-ACG, CICC o kung sinumang government offices. Iko-compile po kasi natin 'yan and then hopefully, mamo-monitor din natin kung gaano ba kabilis ang pag-take down ng Facebook,' he added. (The protocol is that they need to report but that takes time. Now, if we see a scam we can just report it to the Scam Vault and the PNP-ACG, or CICC will coordinate with the taking down. We will also monitor how long will it take for Facebook to remove these posts.) Gogolook, which empowers Whoscall—a phone fraud protection app— will use an AI-driven analysis to scan submissions while the PNP-ACG will coordinate with the taking down of the suspicious links and posts on social media as well as the investigation into the incident, de Guzman said. 'Itong ginagawa natin di lang ipapakita na magre-report pero hopefully, magkakaroon ng action,' he added. (We want to show we are just reporting but there will be actions against it.) Meanwhile, Gogolook Philippines country head Mel Motrin said Whoscall screened 20,829 reports from March to June 2025. Of the figures, 70% or 14,627 were assessed by the application. At least 7,200 of the assessed reports were scam calls; around 2,891 were potential scams; and 4,400 were considered to be non-risk. — BM, GMA Integrated News

‘Invisible' iPhone setting blocks spam & scam calls automatically – but it only appears if you make little-known change

CALL KILLER There are some other tricks you'll want to try too BLOCK scam calls in an instant with a hidden iPhone setting that very few people know about. Spam phone calls aren't just annoying – they can also be a dangerous tactic by criminals to steal your info or money. 5 5 Some unlucky phone owners will be plagued by dozens of these dodgy calls every single week. But there's a little-known iPhone setting that can block out calls from these numbers automatically. It's called Call Blocking & Identification, but it's invisible on your phone – at least until you download the right app. Once you download a call ID app, the feature will then show up in your settings. There are loads of call ID apps out there. They maintain giant databases of phone numbers that are known to be linked to spam or scam operations. So once you've got the app and the feature switched on, your calls will be screened to see if there's a match with a dodgy database. That way, you can avoid having to put up with non-stop spam calls. HOW TO TURN IT ON First, you'll need to go to the official Apple App Store and download some call ID apps. Some popular options are Truecaller and Whoscall, but there are loads out there. Apples's big announcements from WWDC with a flurry new features for the gadgets you already own And the more you have installed, the greater your chance of catching a dodgy number. Once you've downloaded them, you can go to Settings > Apps > Phone > Call Blocking & Identification. This setting will only appear if you have at least one call ID apps installed. Chose the option to Silence Junk Callers (which works based on your carrier) and then activate any Call Identification apps that you've installed. 5 TRY SILENCING UNKNOWN CALLERS Here's another trick that's worth trying... You can actually set your iPhone up to silence all phone calls from unknown callers. If you turn the setting on, unknown callers will be sent straight to voicemail. Just go to Settings > Apps > Phone > Calls > Silence Unknown Callers and toggle it on. Also, if you've got iOS 17 or later (go to Settings > General > Software Update to check) then you can read transcriptions of your voicemail so you don't have to listen to them. And they should show up in real-time as the voicemail is being left. Picture Credit: The Sun / Apple You'll need to toggle them to the green "on" position for them to become active. COMING SOON! There's another handy feature coming soon that will help you avoid even more phone scammers. It's called Call Screening, and it's a new trick due out in the upcoming iOS 26 update for your iPhone. That won't be out until September at the earliest, but it'll make a big difference. Once it's out, go to Settings > General > Software Update to claim the new features. Then when that's installed, your phone will use a virtual AI robot to automatically screen your calls. It will ask the person's name and reason for calling – all using a robot voice – and then write out the answer for you in real-time on your screen. Once that appears, you can decide whether to answer, or instead send it to voicemail if you think it's a scam.
