Burkburnett man sent to prison for murder conviction

A Wichita County jury late Tuesday sentenced Burkburnett resident Ronald Burdick to 35 years in prison for the murder of Michael Wesley Randall, according to Wichita County online court records. The same jury convicted Burdick of the crime earlier Tuesday and could have sentenced him to 5 to 99 years or life in prison. Burdick was being held Wednesday in the Wichita County Jail, pending transfer to prison, online jail records show. Burdick, 45, was indicted in November 2023 for the murder of Randall, 41, who was shot to death on June 9, 2023, court records show. More: Jury finds Burdick guilty of murder An affidavit filed in the case indicated Michael Randall and his brother, Russell Randall, were sitting in a parked pickup at a business in the 1900 block of Sheppard Road in Burkburnett on the day of the killing. Burdick was on the scene and admitted to law enforcement officers he shot Michael Randall through the window as he sat in the passenger seat of the vehicle, according to the affidavit. Burdick was arrested at the scene and charged with murder. His bail was set at $1 million, and he was released from jail the following day, according to Wichita County online records. Jail records show that following the jury's decision, Burdick was returned to the jail. More: Who are the Wichita Falls area's top small-high school football players in past 25 years? Juneteenth to be observed with bash in Spudder Park, holidays for Wichita Falls agencies

The 19th annual Juneteenth Bash will be June 21 and June 22 in Spudder Park at Smith and Tulsa streets in Wichita Falls, Crystal LaGale posted on Facebook. Attendees are invited to bring their lawn chairs, grills, tents, family and friends, LaGale wrote in a Facebook event. The bash will include live performances, vendors, bounce houses, water balloons, a basketball tourney and championship game, dominoes, spades, food and music. Many government agencies and offices will be closed on Thursday to observe Juneteenth, the formal observance of the end of slavery in the U.S. It is recognized as a federal holiday and a state holiday in Texas. Wichita County offices will be closed on the date, as well as federal and state offices. The city of Wichita Falls does not recognize Juneteenth as a holiday. The date is significant because June 19, 1865, was the day Union general Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston to tell Texas slaves they had been freed, according to Texas State Historical Association. The association said Texas became the first state to officially adopt the holiday in 1980. It was recognized as a national holiday in 2021.
