Coronation Street actor and stand-up star Tony Peers dies aged 78
Tony Peers - who appeared in the ITV soap as three different characters during his career - has died at the age of 78. Coronation Street actor and stand-up star Tony Peers has died at the age of 78. The team at his company, Tony Peers Ltd, announced the sad news on Wednesday. As reported in the Mirror, the statement reads: "It is with great sadness that we announce that Scarborough showbiz legend Tony Peers has taken his final bow. Our wonderful producer, manager and friend sadly fell asleep for the last time in the early hours of this morning. "All at Tony Peers Limited are devastated by this news and in Tony's words 'the show must go on.' We will be continuing to lead all future productions and keeping Tony's pantomime legacy alive across the country for years to come." The Wigan-born entertainer appeared on ITV's Coronation Street several times, playing a delivery man, a junk dealer and finally Peter Mallett - the father of Gary Mallett. He began his career in the 1960s at Butlins. Over the years, he appeared on Emmerdale, Heartbeat, Rik Mayall Presents, All Creatures Great and Small and finally Last of the Summer Wine - which was his final TV credit in 2004. Speaking to The Scarborough News in 2018, Tony said that when he landed a role in Coronation Street, his mother took the TV Times round to his neighbours and pointed out his names in the credits. It was a big change in attitude from when he first quit his well-paid job to be a Butlin's Redcoat in 1969 in Somerset. "My mum came to see me and cried all the way home from Minehead to Liverpool. She said to my father 'He'll never make a living doing this; he's a big, daft lad and he's got no talent.'" However, she was "proud as punch" four years later when he was hosting his weekly Friday night show at the holiday camp. "She said, 'That's my lad, you know, my lad that.'" Outside of acting, Tony ran entertainment at the Butlins Grand Hotel in the 1980's before forming Tony Peers Productions in 1999 - his own company which put on summer shows and pantomimes. Those at Scarborough Spa - which is where many of Tony's productions took place - said in a statement: "Everyone at the Scarborough Spa is saddened to hear of the passing of Tony Peers. "Tony, who was involved in over 2,500 shows at the Spa as a performer, director, and latterly as producer of the famous Spa summer shows and Christmas pantomimes, passed away peacefully this morning surrounded by family and friends." Tony was with his partner Glenda for 35 years before his death. Speaking to The Scarborough News, Tony said: "She is the least showbiz person I know. "Everyone in this business is an insecure, self-absorbed egomaniac. I would get home from the Spa and start talking about work – after two minutes Glenda would be on to other things. "She taught me there is more to the world than dressing up and messing about. Family is what it is all about."

Today's rugby news as departing Wales coach finds new job and England star hits out at Lions foreign players
Today's rugby news as departing Wales coach finds new job and England star hits out at Lions foreign players The latest rugby news and headlines from Wales and beyond Wales coaches Mike Forshaw (left) has reportedly found a new job (Image: Huw Evans Picture Agency Ltd ) Here are your rugby evening headlines for Thursday, June 12 Departing Wales coach lands new job Leicester Tigers are reportedly set to appoint Mike Forshaw as their new defence coach, with his current deal with the Welsh Rugby Union expiring at the end of this month. The Wigan-born defence coach had previously pointed to his contract ending this summer, with the existing Wales assistants having been in the dark over their futures since the departure of Warren Gatland mid-tournament. However, the former Great Britain rugby league international was not chosen to tour Japan with Wales this summer, with interim head coach Matt Sherratt choosing to take Gethin Jenkins - who Forshaw had actually replaced in the role in 2023 - instead. Despite the WRU's insistence that no decision would be made on any of Gatland's assistants until a new head coach was appointed, it would appear that Forshaw has taken matters into his own hands. Having been previously linked with Gallagher Premiership finalists Leicester following the appointment of Geoff Parling, RugbyPass report that the 55-year-old will be coaching at Welford Road next season. Foreign-born Lions 'doesn't sit well' with Care Former England scrum-half Danny Care says the selection of the foreign-born players for the British and Irish Lions tour to Australia doesn't "sit that well" with him. Article continues below Andy Farrell has picked a number of players in his squad for this summer who were born elsewhere. The likes of Bundee Aki, Jamison Gibson-Park, James Lowe and Duhan van der Merwe all qualified for their respective home nations on residency, while some other members of the squad were born in the southern hemisphere, but had family links to qualify - like Mack Hansen and Sione Tuipulotu. 'Whatever I say here, you're going to get stick. You open yourself up to it,' he told the BBC Rugby Union Weekly podcast. 'It doesn't sit that well with me that some of these… both your starting wingers are going to be lads that never, ever once in their childhood or even their mid-20s ever dreamt of wearing a red Lions jersey. 'It is what it is, it's the rules, and why not. If you're James Lowe or you're Duhan van der Merwe or you're [Jamison] Gibson-Park, you go, 'oh, I'll play for the Lions, yeah.' 'We're not going to change it, but it just doesn't… I think there's a lot of people that feel the same but can't say it.' Wales second-row signs new deal Wales second-row James Ratti had signed a new deal with the Ospreys. Having originally come through the Ospreys' development pathway, he re-joined the club in 2023 after a spell with Cardiff - becoming a mainstay in the team. His first season back at the Ospreys saw him named players' player of the season, while he also earned his first Wales cap against South Africa last June. He has also been included in Wales' squad for the upcoming tour of Japan. 'The last two years have been great for me since I returned to the Ospreys," said Ratti. "There's a great bunch of boys here and we all play for each other, which shines through on a gameday. 'Coming back to my hometown club was an easy decision for me, similarly to signing this new contract, and I'm looking forward to seeing what lies ahead in the future with this team.' Ospreys head coach Mark Jones added: 'Ratti has been incredibly valuable player for us since he made the decision to come back. He's a real Swiss-army knife in both the respects of where he plays and how he plays. 'Ratti is a real workhorse, his ability to carry and commit multiple defenders in contact adds a real dynamism to how we play and we're really happy to have him staying with the club. To succeed in our league, you need players like Ratti, that are relentless and reliable.' Townsend addresses own future Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend has addressed his own future, having already claimed that defence coach Steve Tandy wouldn't be taking the Wales head coach job. Townsend insisted that former Ospreys coach Tandy wouldn't be going anywhere, but there are also questions over his own future. The former Scotland fly-half's contract runs out next year, with another Wales target - Franco Smith - having been touted as a potential successor. However, Townsend has spoken about his future and the discussions he says must happen. Article continues below "If you get more into the year, those discussions would have to happen, whether they're initiated by my bosses or by myself," he told BBC Scotland Rugby Podcast. "I think there's obviously a lot of discussions around the Six Nations, the reviews of that, where we believe we need to improve, but also the longer-term future, what are the challenges coming up for Scotland and that ties in with the pathway and the longer-term strategy. "But I feel there's a lot to be optimistic about with the current group we have, the players that are coming through and the experiences the players had this year. Yes, we're disappointed we didn't win more games, but I know the performances that the players are delivering are putting us in positions to beat the best teams in the world and that's a good foundation to have. The next step is making sure we win those games we put that effort into winning."

Why has Kay Burley quit Sky News? Presenter says goodbye after 36 years
Kay Burley announced her retirement from Sky News live on air on Wednesday after 36 years with the channel. The 64-year-old was part of the team which launched Sky News in 1989. She has covered some major news stories, including the death of Diana, Princess of Wales and 9/11, for which she won the broadcaster a Bafta Award. She asked her breakfast show viewers to keep in touch and said she would continue posting on her social media. Here's why she has quit Sky News. She told viewers she wanted to enjoy her 'other passions, including my love for travel' after 'over a million minutes of live TV news, more than anyone else in the world'. The Wigan-born presenter added: 'So, after covering 12 separate general elections, including Sir Keir Starmer's victory last year, I am retiring from Sky News, let politicians of every party just rejoice at that news. Kay Burley has just unexpectedly announced her retirement from Sky News live on air. — Gavan Reilly (@gavreilly) February 5, 2025 'Thank you for waking up and tuning in every morning. I can't tell you how much I have appreciated your support over the last three and a half decades — you're awesome.' Burley was suspended from her role for six months in 2020 after admitting she broke Covid-19 rules while celebrating her birthday. She returned to Sky News on June 7, 2021. Burley was a contestant on ITV's Dancing on Ice in 2017. The following year, she was part of the second series of Celebrity Hunted. She began her journalism career at BBC Local Radio and Tyne Tees Television before joining Sky News. Burley has become a prominent figure in British journalism, known for her incisive interviews. David Rhodes, Sky News Executive Chairman, confirmed Wednesday was her last day on air. 'Talking with Kay about her plans, we all felt it was more fitting that Kay break this story herself,' he said. 'She's done that now in her own words, and we'll be sharing the clip on social channels today. 'A founding member of Sky News, Kay helped build our proposition from its launch in 1989. She has been a constant presence on our screens over the course of our 36 years. 'Kay confirmed that today was her final broadcast with Sky News. Of course, Breakfast continues — with the other current presenters and with our Friday-Sunday team. 'We thank Kay for her huge contribution to Sky, to the art of the interview and to British journalism. And we wish her the best of luck.' The presenter has one son called Alexander Kutner with football agent Steve Kutner. She has been married twice: first to fellow reporter Steve Burley and later to Kutner. Alexander's exact age is unknown, but he is reportedly about 31 or 32, after being born in 1993. While Burley keeps her social media strictly for work, she occasionally posts about her son. In April 2024, she posted a picture of him with the family dog on her Instagram account. In March 2022, she promoted her son's new collector car market consultant business, Wolf Hub, on Instagram. She wrote: 'Check out my son's new business and maybe give him a follow? I maybe biased but its excellent.' Burley shared a photo of the pair enjoying an exotic safari excursion in February 2024. She captioned the photo: 'My son and I love safari. #Archive.'
