Wigan man jailed for causing 'life changing injuries' in e-bike crash

Warning this article incudes distessing images. Two men from Wigan have been sentenced for their part in an e-bike crash that left a pensioner with life-changing injuries. On 1 August 2023, Margaret Scaldwell was crossing Orrell Road in Wigan when she was hit by an e-bike being driven by Kian Monks at about 40 mph in a 30 mph zone. CCTV shown to Bolton Crown Court showed Mrs Scaldwell, 70 being knocked off her feet and thrown down the road after the collision. The impact broke her spine, pelvis, both arms, and 19 ribs and she needed steel plates fitted in her face. The court also heard the emergency calls made in the minutes after the collision where nearby drivers described the horrific collision. Kian Monks, who used to play Wigan Athletic's Youth team was 19 at the time of the crash. He had previously admitted to causing serious injury by dangerous driving. Today he was sentenced to 2 years and 3 months in prison. Joel Pilling, who was 20 at the time of the collision had pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and aiding and abetting serious injury by dangerous driving. In her victim impact statement Mrs Scaldwell said she was an "independent lady who always had a smile on my face" but is now "no longer living and is just existing". As a result of the collision she relies on medication for the constant pain and to sleep at night. She said she has "nightmares and constant earache" after the collision. Mrs Scaldwell said in her statement that was read to court that she has to sleep downstairs in the dining room as she cannot climb stairs. She has limited use of her hands and struggles to eat as she lost her teeth in the collision and cannot hold a knife and fork. The court heard she has been left with "multiple life changing injuries" which means she has no social life or confidence and is on anti-depressants, she cannot leave the house on her own. Joel Pilling had bought the Talaria Sting e-bike from a friend for £3,200. It was not taxed or insured and the breaks were faulty. Judge Jon Close said that even if the breaks were in working order it could not have stopped in time when it was travelling at least 10 mph over the speed limit. The e-bike was made even more unsteady as it was carrying a passenger at the time. On the day of the crash Joel Pilling had picked up Kian Monks on the bike, but later they had swapped so Monks was driving and Pilling was the passenger. Monks insisted that he had no memory of swapping drivers, so he believed he was the passenger at the time of the collision. Both Monks and Pilling fled the scene immediately after the crash. Monks was arrested at a nearby taxi rank and Pilling turned himself into Police several hours after the crash. Monks told the court that "I woke up in a pool of my own blood, I thought I was going to die and needed to get home to my Mum and sister". He said he had "no recollection" of hitting anyone. Mobile phone footage showed to the court saw him riding the bike away from the scene. Kian Monks said he has written a letter of apology to Mrs Scaldwell and said "I feel horrendous about my actions and never set out to hurt anyone" saying he is "sincerely sorry" Monks played as a centre-forward for Wigan Athletic's Youth Team during 2020/21 season. He has been without a club since July 2022. He was described in court as having a "promising football career" that also included some time as an academy player at Bolton Wanderers. He suffered a "career ending injury to his ankle" and then started to get in with the wrong crowd and make "stupid decision" when his future in football came to an end. The court was told by Joel Pilling's defence team that the now 22 year old is a reformed character who was in with the 'wrong crowd' at the time of the collision. He has shown genuine remorse for his behaviour and has good prospects for rehabilitation as he is working towards an apprenticeship and a career as a tradesman. Joel Pilling, who was 20 at the time of the collision had pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and aiding and abetting serious injury by dangerous driving. He was given a 22 months jail sentence suspended for two years plus 250 hours unpaid work. He was also disqualified from driving for two years .

Whalley brace not enough for Stanley against Wigan

Shaun Whalley scored twice but Accrington Stanley lost 4-2 to League One side Wigan Athletic in their latest friendly on Saturday. Whalley fired home from the edge of the area and then from the penalty spot as Stanley held a 2-0 lead over Ryan Lowe's side. But the Latics came back in the second half as both sides prepare for their respective campaigns, starting in a fortnight. Wigan's Paul Mullin has the first chance on 15 minutes, firing across the goal and narrowly wide. It was an even battle with limited goalmouth action before Whalley opened the scoring on 34 minutes. He got the ball on the edge of the area and drilled it low into the corner of the net beyond Sam Tickle. The Latics had a good chance to equalise on 43 minutes when a free-kick into the box fell to Jon Mellish six yards out, but Michael Kelly did well to keep out his effort with his legs. Just before half time, Charlie Caton rushed on to the ball in the area and swept it goalwards but it was straight into Tickle's arms. John Doolan made three changes at half time with Ollie Wright, Josh Woods and Tyler Walton coming on for the second period. Striker Caton had two good chances after the restart, turning and shooting in the area but it was off-target and then a header from close range could not test Tickle. The Reds pressed for a second and were awarded a penalty on 54 minutes for a foul on Whalley. Whalley took the spot-kick and celebrated his second goal of the game. Josh Woods almost made it three on 60 minutes with a superb strike from 20 yards which Tickle pushed away. Soon after, Doolan made wholesale changes, giving the majority of his squad the run out including Seamus Conneely, who is coming back from an injury sustained last season. Wigan got one back on 65 minutes when Callum McManaman's cross found former Red loanee Dara Costelloe in the area and he fired into the net. They levelled on 76 minutes when Maleace Asamoah got the ball in the area and finished well. Wigan were awarded a penalty on 78 minutes when Josh Woods fouled Jason Kerr and, although Wright guessed the right way, Costelloe squeezed the ball into the bottom corner. Stanley came close to levelling on 83 minutes when Walton hit the corner of bar and post with a looping effort. The fourth arrived for Wigan on 89 minutes when Asamoah got the ball in the area and stroked the ball home. Stanley: Kelly, Sass, Grant, Rawson, Coyle, Whalley, B Woods, Sinclair, Matthews, Caton, Brown. Subs: Wright, Mooney, Henderson, Trialist A, Popoola, Martin, Walton, Smith, Conneely, Tunstall, J Woods. Attendance: 1,141 (676 away).

Wrexham owner's 'heartbreaking' transfer bombshell after player's statement

One of Wrexham's co-owners has opened up on the emotional impact of parting ways with a star player this summer following the club's promotion to the Championship Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney has shared his heartache upon discovering the exit of a beloved player through social media. The Welsh club has bid farewell to a number of key players since their triumphant rise to the Championship in April. The most notable departures included seasoned goalkeeper Mark Howard and experienced forward Steven Fletcher. Last month, it was also revealed that Wrexham 's star striker Paul Mullin would be moving to Wigan Athletic on a season-long loan after losing his place in the team under manager Phil Parkinson last term. ‌ McElhenney, who is in the process of legally changing his name to Rob Mac, has spoken candidly about the emotional toll of parting with players who have significantly contributed to the club's achievements. ‌ The actor and co-creator of 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia' disclosed that he learned of one squad member's summer departure only after reading about it on X, previously known as Twitter. Speaking on the Pardon My Take podcast, McElhenney expressed his surprise after not being informed by Parkinson about the player's release but stood by the decision made by the ex-Bolton and Sunderland manager. The 48-year-old said: "I found out one of my favourite players was released from the team this year. I found out via Twitter and I was just as shocked as he was. It was his statement, and the manager hadn't told us yet. ‌ "He talked to the player, which is what he should have done, the player talked to his teammates and then put out a statement, which is his right to do. My heart was broken and I did not see it coming. "The players will often play themselves out of a job. This happened with a few of our players where they gave their hearts, their souls and their effort and helped us get promoted. ‌ "For that, us, the club and the town are eternally grateful. But what winds up happening is, you go up a league, and maybe they're 36 or 37 years old, and you need somebody who's 21 or 22. They accept that, but it still doesn't make it easy and it's not fun." Wrexham were competing in the National League when McElhenney and Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds initially purchased the club in February 2021. The North Wales side has since secured three consecutive promotions, with the Hollywood duo helping propel the team into the second tier. ‌ During the interview, McElhenney revealed how he first approached Reynolds about joining his quest to acquire a football club. He also shared the cautionary words he received from his wife, Kaitlin Olson, before reaching out to the Canadian. "I went back recently and I found the original email that I sent to him where I laid out the idea and what I wanted to do," McElhenney said. "Originally, I was going to do it on my own and ask Ryan if he wanted to be a sponsor with Aviation Gin as the front of kit sponsor. ‌ "The more I thought about it, the more I realised that he's such an entrepreneur. He's globally famous, whatever he touches seems to turn to gold and if I could potentially include him as a partner, that could take this thing into the stratosphere. "I remember asking my wife about it, and I said, 'Caitlin, what do you think about me asking Ryan to be a full partner on this?' She said, 'I don't know. I guess it depends on whether your ego can take sharing the screen with Ryan.'". Sharing the secret behind their ownership success, he added: "We were honest from the very beginning, and we went in with our hearts on our sleeves and said, 'We don't know anything about football.' I was not even a fan of the beautiful game up until five years ago, and now I'm horrifically addicted." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
